Electoral College

Once obscure, Ohio vote has new prominence

The Ohio presidential election -- the one that counts -- has been conducted mostly in obscurity for 200 years. Not this year. The Electoral College's vote in the Ohio Senate chamber tomorrow is expected to be accompanied by demonstrations sponsored by groups who aren't buying President Bush's victory over Democrat John Kerry. Led by a coalition representing two minor-party candidates, the dissidents have demanded a recount that will begin this week. Many believe the recount won't change Bush's 119-thousand-vote victory over Democrat John Kerry, but some do. Ohio and its 20 electoral votes put Bush over the threshold for election when Kerry conceded on the morning of November third.

1. Was it fraud or not?
The mainstream media and even Kerry and all his major supporters are harping on one fact that the recount may not overturn the election!!

The questions are quite another.

Was their fraud or not?
Who perpetrated that fraud?

I hope that on Monday that is going to be the crux of the argument and presentation and not whether Kerry would not be able to catch up on Bush with a recount!!

3. That's why I'm glad they are focusing on the broken vote
and not on the election of John Kerry. We keep hearing about how Kerry and the Dems say they are not trying to flip the election, as you say. Even so, I almost yelled at someone last night who said "Get over it, he lost." I said it wasn't about Kerry winning or losing, it was about making sure that we have free and fair elections. He just repeated "Get over it. We lost."

Like pounding my head against a wall. Even when you take Kerry out of the equation, and you just argue for fair voting, it's hard to make headway with some folk.

6. Yes, someone I know, who is a Dem and a Vietnam Vet
who told me the story of how, when he was new in Nam, he was sitting around some other guys who were reading the Stars and Stripes. Kerry's testimony was printed in it, and my friend reported that they said, "Yeah! Tell it, brother! Tell em what's going on over here! Get us out, and don't let them send anybody else!"

So I respect his pov on the vet issues, and he is definitely a Kerry supporter. Even so, I surprised him by telling him that Kerry started the Iran Contra investigation. He said that was news to him, and then muttered something about who was running Kerry's campaign if an important fact like that was left out.

But he just wasn't buying fraud, suppression or anything like representing enough votes to flip the election, or even being enough of a worry to fix. He just said wait until 2008 when everyone will be sick of Bush. Frustrating.

8. The thing is there is always at least some fraud
Most people know this, and it has happened in elections throughout our history. But now we have electronic voting, which makes any fraud potentially more effective and pervasive. We have to stop it now, not let this issue go on to other elections. We've had problems with electronic voting machines since they began, and we've got to get rid of them and get a better system. Canada seems to be doing just fine without them--let's go ask them how they do it!

And as long as we are putting a stop to massive fraud, we might as well take the opportunity to prevent THIS stolen election, which threatens to disenfranchise the 58 million of us who voted for Kerry.
So many lives could be saved, so much national debt would be prevented, and so much wilderness area in the U.S. would be preserved.

9. This is true
"The thing is there is always at least some fraud"

And, I think it is time we end all fraud by placing non-partisan people in charge of elections, and by exposing as much of it as we can.

10. That's what I said
and my Dem friend just started talking about state rights or something.

I want the same machine nationwide, and I want non-partisan folks running elections.
