on CGCS, yesterday, i started a thread on the Clinton Curtis testimony. second post i made to the thread was one pointing to comments here:
"Predictable, and in fact, someone predicted exactly this last week, that the peterson verdict would come in today in distraction from the electoral issues. of course, which is more important to most americans ya think?!..."
http://www.commongroundcommonsense.org/index.php?showtopic=9944&view=findpost&p=95273and as the peterson announcement was made, i thought it'd be interesting to document our tendency to eagerly suck up the media sensation swill:
"we are the problem!

http://www.commongroundcommonsense.org/index.php?showtopic=9944&view=findpost&p=95685remember, these are people who have an active political interest and with leanings like yours and mine.
i tend to cynicism and to suppose that it's all a product of our conditioning-from-birth by corporate media to be reflexive consumers. after all, that's what this country is about, right, keeping the masses on the treadmill that sustains the turnover of cash?!
reminder: what was the most patriotic thing we were exhorted to undertake after 911?:
"...Additionally, politicians from New York City Mayor Rudy
Giuliani to President George Bush are telling Americans to buy, buy, buy as a patriotic act.
"I think patriotism and how to act patriotic is not clear to many people," says Luce. "Can patriotism be translated into a consumer action? People may love America, but highlighting the patriotic message may cause them to avoid making any buying decisions. I think it will take time for consumers to respond and decide whether going to a Broadway show is patriotic or flying in an airplane is patriotic. Some of this patriotism could set up interesting conflicts for people..."

my thesis along these lines is a much larger one but part of the problem is that we are entrained to consume. broadcast whores and instant gratification make us perfect cogs in the transaction machine and emotional manipulation through sensation keep our eyes in front of their ads.
WE've gotta be a big part of changing this!
