Three-mile march to White House, TURN YOUR BACK ON B*sh: Quiet Rejection

Bush Detractors Plan Quiet Rejection

By DONNA CASSATA, APWASHINGTON (Dec. 14) - No buttons, signs or unusual dress will distinguish the protesters from the thousands who will line the inaugural parade route next month, but at a set time, they say they will demonstrate against President Bush - by turning their backs on the chief executive. Coupled with the widely expected pomp and pageantry of a presidential inauguration are demonstrations by protesters angered by Bush's policies, in particular the war in Iraq. Getting ready for Jan. 20, 2005, various groups are using Web
sites, e-mails, fliers and word of mouth to urge thousands of demonstrators to gather in the nation's capital.

Among planned events are an anti-war rally and three-mile march to the White House, a massive bike ride similar to those that disrupted traffic in New York City before the Republican National Convention, and a "die-in" to remind the nation of more than 1,200 U.S. dead in Iraq. Through the Web site www.turnyourbackonbush.org, organizers are urging demonstrators to leave political buttons and placards at home, join other parade-goers on the afternoon of the inauguration and then, as Bush's motorcade passes, show the president their backs.
"Turning your back is as old as authority itself," said Jet Heiko, a Philadelphia-based protest organizer. "It's a very understandable symbol for defying authority." On its Web site, the group called it a unique action because "we won't know who is participating until the moment it begins." The DC Anti-War Network is organizing a rally and march to the White House on the morning of the inauguration, getting the word out through the Web site www.counter-inaugural.org/, which says, "Bush isn't going away, and neither are we."

The violence in Iraq was one reason more than 100,000 protesters filled New York City streets on a Sunday morning in August before the Republican convention. Organizers of the inauguration protests expect stronger feelings toward the war to persuade thousands to travel to Washington next month. Heightened security, January weather and the calendar - the inauguration falls on a Thursday - are certain to limit the numbers.

In 2000, additional officers from the Metropolitan Police and other law enforcement agencies kept order, and no major confrontations occurred and only a handful of people were arrested. Security is expected to be even tighter for the first inauguration since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
Four years ago, protest organizers capitalized on strong feelings over the disputed election, which had barely subsided, and the timing inauguration fell on a Saturday. This year's election was settled weeks ago, on Nov. 3, when Democratic Sen. John Kerry called to congratulate Bush. Still, organizers hope to attract a crowd. "We got 80 percent of people to protest the Republican Convention in New York in the last week," said Jim Macdonald of the DC Anti-War Network.

1. Here is Jeff Seemanns story of doing this once and hopefully again.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2004/12/14/23145/478

Reading this article brought back memories for me....you see, I was thrust into a full-fledged political activism (and eventually a Congressional Candidate) through a very similar experience. I'm not sure how many people know this story about my life, because for a full year I kept my identity hidden, fearful of attacks from the Right-Wing media.

In June of 2002, Bush was giving the commencement address at Ohio State, my alma mater. I was disgusted by this, and wanted to protest. So when I heard about a TYBOB movement from the students, I decided to go with my wife and daughter. What followed was something I never expected.

The following is what I wrote online about 6 hours after my experience......

- go to the link and read the entire thing.

3. thanks for posting this...more on DC Anti-War Network action
It's nice, as compared with the New York Times, that the AP got its information mostly correct, even spelling my last name correctly.

If you have any questions about the DC Anti-War Network (DAWN) action, don't hesitate to ask me them. I hope you all can come out or organize in your own towns.

I want to say this...to make our action happen as a completely volunteer, grassroots organization, we need help from people like you with donations. Please consider helping out. Check out http://www.dawndc.net/events/j20_05/donate.php . We are a member group of United for Peace and Justice, but we are completely autonomous and run on an open and nonhierarchical structure.

Anyhow, any questions?

4. Effectiveness of an article judged by amount of chatter on Free Republic
For a good laugh...

What the freepers are saying about this article and about our protests...we've also been getting a nice dose of hate mail in our Inboxes. That tells me one thing; our action is relevant!

pounding, heard around the world... understand silent rejection and it's poetic but if everyone is so far away what about DRUMS? Silence is magic in the theater with a slow beat it can be so amazing... backs to him but i really think i'm taking A DRUM! We have to assume that Rove will send * support en mass... DRUM BEATS WILL DROWN OUT * SOUND and in silent rythm we'll protest... no words just... H-E-A-R-T B-E-A-T, B-E-A-T

10. mass statement..... and more effective
They won't let protesters anywhere near the action -- they'll heard us away, like people were at the GOP convention and all of the rallies (50,000 people here in West Chester, and protesters got to be in a little area away from everyone).... I say, dress conservative, leave your eggs at home (why get arrested now?), and play up the the fact that * is attempting to have a "real" walk to the white house and that cameras IGNORED all that went on that day in 2000. WHO saw the problems and the eggs, and the run back to the car unless they were there throwing -- until Michael Moore got the footage and put it in his movie.

THEY WILL NOT FILM EGGS!! (or more likely, they will not show footage of eggs, or yelling or drums, or red hands) ... you will not be able to stay more than 30 seconds, I guarentee, if you lob one. Ditto noise makers, and everything else -- they WILL NOT film (or show the film) -- they will ignore, and the cops will come and you might feel better, but no one who is watching would ever know....

BUT -- a street full of people, happy, go-lucky, "clean conservative" types... who happen to quietly turn and bow their heads as */his car passes.... if there are enough of us turning en-mass.... it WOULD make a message.... and how can a cop arrest you for turning around? We don't live in a POLICE STATE do we? *not yet as long as congress people fight for democracy!*

I am in Ohio and Concentrating on efforts to get more officials involved, but I just wanted to chime in -- it's true that from "somewhere" this story came -- but who cares? Unless one, in these united states, has to sign a loyalty agreement to witness his walk down the street, why not participate in a powerful, non-violent, free-speech movement?

*stepping off my soapbox*

You may return to your regularly scheduled program... and while you are at it, maybe you could write 3 letters to your congress people now to STAND UP FOR DEMOCRACY and investigate anomalies in the election.... in Ohio, or throughout the country.

Have a good day. :)

what do you think might happen? Bush will confess to his crimes and resign. Please.

Millions protested against the Iraq war, loudly. Marches ARE USELESS.

14. I did that two years ago while visiting Washington
The motor cade was comming down the street and a Capital Cop said if you wait you can see the president.
I replyed, I wouldn't wait one minute but my wife thought our daughter should see the show regardless of who the man is.
So I just turned around and quietly faced the other direction as they passed.
