Congressman John Conyers of Michigan, the newspaper reports, will today ask the FBI and a county prosecutor in Ohio to investigate what he has termed “inappropriate and likely illegal election tampering” in one or more counties in that state.

And beginning on the front page of this morning’s Washington Post, there cascades down upon the reader no less than 41 paragraphs, told soberly and without much evident partisanship, reciting the litany of Ohio screw-ups that led that newspaper to invoke the headline “Several Factors Contributed to ‘Lost’ Voters in Ohio.”

Conyers’ invoking of the FBI doesn’t even make it into The Post’s pages, probably because The Times makes it clear that Conyers shared his letter of request to the Bureau and Ohio prosecutors with them. Ironically, that letter apparently focuses on a reported irregularity not in the November 2 vote per se, but in the days preceding the recount. As The Times notes, Conyers’ inquiry rests primarily on a sworn affidavit by the deputy director of elections of Hocking County, Ohio, the Democrat Sherole Eaton.

Ms. Eaton’s story has been circulating around the Internet for days, and was presented to Conyers at the first stop of his “Voting Forum” road tour in Columbus on Monday, to his apparent shock and awe. Her affidavit contends that last Friday, in advance of the recount, a representative of the manufacturer of the vote-counting software used in her county’s vote November 2, made several adjustments to the Hocking County tabulator.

10. my letter to Keith:
I would think that when anyone- let alone an employee a private company opens
up a vote tabulator, representatives from both parties must be present. Blackwell
locked down vote records on the 10th because reps from both parties were not present during
3rd party investigation.
They can't have it both ways and this stinks!

To: KOlbermann@MSNBC.com
From: xxxxxxx
Subject: Thanks for your journalistic restraint on the vote fraud issue

I know I've been firing off emails since before the election but you had the patience and intelligence of a true journalist to wait for some political action and the appearance of affidavits, witnesses and some semblance of proof before getting everyone riled up and taking on the ire of people like Limbaugh and Coulter.

Bless your heart, you're not only adorable you're quite savvy and patient. :loveya: Thank you! A falafel will either be consumed or used for a sponge bath in your honor!

A loyal viewer and fan since the ESPN days,

With the NYT and WP now covering this in some detail, it can no longer be ignored. Is anyone else concerned about the fact that so far everything we've seen shows no discrepancies? Either there really weren't any or they've succeeded in changing the machines. Either way, this is bad news. I'm so afraid Blockwell is going to pull this off for Shrub.

34. Anyone who remembers the Nixon years will recall that
the whole Watergate mess started with just a couple of guys who refused to give up until they had the whole story. Just kept nipping at the ankles of the story until the story truly started breaking. People who thought there was more of a story were called traitors, sore losers, tin foil hat wearers in an attempt to shut people up. And in the early days they were very successful at shutting down the media and the protesters with tactics very similar to what is being used today. The FBI was used to discredit people, wire tap phones, tail and intimidate, newspaper reports were planted, careers ruined and yet a few brave souls didn't sell out. The reporters who were committed to the truth just kept plugging away - long after the asshole had been sworn in for his second term in office (with a huge mandate, no less!) until the rest of the MSM could no longer ignore what was plainly a major story. Have no reason to believe that it isn't going to take another Woodward and Bernstein like investigation to get to the bottom of this corruption - and KO is just the man for the job.

Of course, the job is much, much harder this time around. The repugs control the WH, the Congress, the Supreme Court AND the media. If that isn't a deck stacked against truth and democracy, nothing is. We just have to preserver - even if it goes after January 20, 2005. I will not be happy until this Gang of Thugs are completely disgraced and in jail.

Go KO GO!

played a vital role in all this, but the downside of his position is that he's playing the role of apologist for the sorry ass MSM like the poster below ("...add a few midgets...) points out. Don't get me wrong, I fully appreciate KO, but being realistic he is a mere mortal and there are some things that I am not happy about in his reporting and blogging. In addition to apologizing for the risk-adverse MSM I think he's been far too generous in applying water to all the smoking stories that should have been taken seriously and persued, and skipped out entirely on quite a number of important leads. He's playing the role of arbiter of what is and isn't worthy to be reported, and being unfortunately stingy with that blessing. (ie. should we all just rejoince that KO has pronounced his blessing on Conyers, by proclaiming him not a tin-foil hatter? Oh happy days. Thank you KO.) That being said, thank God for KO, and may he reign a very long time at MSNBC. I've corresponded with him in the past and while I might not agree with his every move I'm greatful for his role in publicizing Votergate.

KeithO as an individual is doing a great job, but he still needs to be viewed within the context of the MS-nbc media machine. Whenever the coverage comes close to discussion of Windows-based electronic voting corruption then it either gets ignored or discredited (ie Bev Harris, Curtis, ... even Madsen).

So why is Anderson Cooper missing out on all this? :loveya:

it's sad that Americans.. and the media that feed them, need such drama to pay attention to something so important to them. It's like most things in life, its hard to get involved if it doesn't affect you personally.. well, freedom is there, until its gone.. but that might be to late to get it back without the bloodshed that Jesse Jackson spoke of.

39. Olbermann Reply:
<snipKO> There are no subpoenas to be issued, very little budget, and not even the hint of the statutory bipartisanship that a bona fide committee or subcommittee would bring with it. In short, Congress isn’t investigating the Ohio vote or even these latest allegations about the recount— Congressman Conyers and several of his Democratic cohorts are taking testimony in informal hearings.

<snipNYT> Brett Rapp, the president of Triad, said that although it would be unusual for an employee to ask about a specific precinct, preparing the machines for a recount was standard procedure and was done in all 41 counties where Triad handles vote counts. He added that he welcomed any investigation.

<snipKO> Conyers has also again exchanged letters with Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell and would appear to have once more gotten the public relations edge on him. After Conyers’ “36 Questions” letter of December 2, he said yesterday that he had received a reply from Blackwell in which the Secretary refused to answer any of the questions, and (according to Conyers), made the rather baroque claim that he couldn’t be cooperative with the GAO and members of Congress at the same time.

45. KO maintains there is no MSM "lockdown"-- I disagree!!
Edited on Wed Dec-15-04 07:10 PM by ailsagirl
The media are simply not covering the story... maybe a few little mentions-- but there's no outrage or concern on their part. It's as if they're appeasing us with these toothless little articles.

KO writes, "...Conyer's description of the response to the request...was...a little fulsome."

"fulsome" means "disgusting" or "offensive"

Why is he using that word? Doesn't fit.

I dunno-- I guess we're lucky it's even being mentioned...

49. That's not what "fulsome" means.
Main Entry: ful·some
Pronunciation: 'ful-s&m
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English fulsom copious, cloying, from full + -som -some
1 a : characterized by abundance : COPIOUS <describes in fulsome detail -- G. N. Shuster> <fulsome bird life. The feeder overcrowded -- Maxine Kumin> b : generous in amount, extent, or spirit <the passengers were fulsome in praise of the plane's crew

40. Anothe blog today - CONYERS will appear LIVE tonight
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6210240 /

Conyers: "Maintenance" violates state and federal laws (Keith Olbermann)

SECAUCUS— Congressman John Conyers' request that the FBI investigates the actions of a voting equipment manufacturer in Hocking County, Ohio last week, includes the assertion that those actions may have violated two federal laws, and as many as four state statutes.

Conyers, who will appear live on tonight's edition of "Countdown," notes in his letter to the FBI (and the Hocking County Prosecutor), that "for a period of 22 months from the date of a federal election... it (is) a felony for any person to 'willfully steal, destroy, conceal, mutilate, or alter' any such record."

The Michigan representative also wrote that under Ohio law, "during a period of official canvassing, all interaction with ballots must be 'in the presence of all of the members of the board and any other persons who are entitled to witness the official canvass'." Conyers notes that just last week, Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell had declared that the so-called "canvassing period," which usually expires ten days after an election, had been extended to cover the period of the Ohio recount.

Conyers' office indicated there had not yet been a response from the FBI field office in Cincinnati, nor from the Hocking County Prosecutor's Office.
