interesting article that glosses over the obvious
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=710&ncid=703&e=5&u=/usatoday/20041215/pl_usatoday/demsgaininhiddenelection

<snip>
The businessman from Grand Junction, Colo., won 55% of the vote to become a Democratic state representative in a county that supported Republican President Bush (news - web sites) by a 2-to-1 ratio.

....

"It was like a hidden election," says Tim Storey, political analyst at the National Conference of State Legislatures. "The result was remarkable and not easy to explain."

The number of legislatures changing control is not unusual, Storey says. The oddity was that the most successful party in local races was beaten so thoroughly at the top of the ticket.

Storey says it's too early to tell whether the results were a statistical blip or an indication that Democrats are making progress at the grass-roots level.

or..perhaps it means there are Dixiecrats all over the country....?

5. This is the latest Repub talking point
I'm not saying it doesn't happen that people vote Dem local and state level, and then vote Repub for the White House, but it's worth looking into because too many people are beginning to use this as an "excuse."

What the hell happened to "the exit polls are wrong" excuse? That seems to have dropped off by the wayside, and now this reason is taking its place.
