Let's SHUT DOWN Washington on Inauguration Day!
Edited on Wed Nov-03-04 08:34 PM by EmperorHasNoClothes
I'm proposing a peaceful protest larger than any in history. I'm serious about this. This country was founded in a history of protest. The massive and wide-ranging protests in the past have actually produced results, and they're still talked about. But these days, it seems like everyone is all too eager to just roll over and take what comes. It is time to change that.

This is only the first step in taking back our country. Let's make the Million Man March look like a PTA meeting. Let's take the media focus off of the inauguration and put it on us.

Let's show them that while they can steal the election, they can't steal the will of the people.

On edit: They will in fact hold an inauguration again, even though he's currently president. Remember, Clinton was sworn in again in '96.

I think we need to plan a million liberal march. We can be there, be vocal, and start the movement to 2006 congressional elections.

4. I think a nationwide protest is in order
a huge one in DC and auxillary ones in the rest of the country-after all, Jan. 20 can mean really bad weather, and some of us are too poor to travel.

But we must protest, we must let everyone know that not everyone in this country is a brainwashed idiot.

1. Either he'll grab it and attempt to snort it, or;

2. Ashcroft will swoop down and accuse you of being the "Anthrax Terrorist" that sent letters to prominent Democrats (you know, the ones that spawned an investigation, but he soon had to abandon when he was getting too close to the right-wing culprit responsible?)

15. I think the best place to start is AAR
If everyone can start calling them and pushing for this, maybe someone there will pick this up.

This is going to take effort by everyone to make it happen. Get the word out to any left-leaning media source you can. Everyone reading this who wants this march on Washington to happen, take just a little time - a phone call, and email, a letter - it is the sheer volume that will make this happen.

Post any contact information you find here for other users. Get the word out in any way you can!

52. Randi Rhodes is not
usually into protests. I don't know about the others at AAR. The trouble is, you could have 10 million protesters and the "news" would say there were 100,000 and show about 50 of them being "violent."

Not that I'm against it at all. The powers that be would know how many protesters were there and it might give THEM pause.

43. Everybody says we can only vote and hope. Uh, except US history is
Edited on Wed Nov-03-04 09:49 PM by HypnoToad
quite the opposite. Voting did squat.

Did George Washington vote to ditch England, with King George saying "Oh, majority voted, I'll go bugger off back to my high chair in London. Tweedle-dee-dee..."?! I don't think so!!!

Freeing the slaves: Did the North and South play a game of checkers to resolve the crisis? Nope, they killed each other. Abe Lincoln, oddly a Republican, had the guts to do the right thing - and was murdered for his progressive liberalism.

Did Rosa Parks incite the abolishment of segregation by saying that she was sorry for taking up Whitey's special seat? Hell no.

Gay rights: If it were not for the Stonewall RIOTS, nothing would have changed. And we sadly have a long way to go, what with judges siding with the murderer buying the excuse "He made a pass and I got anxious so that's why I stabbed him 62 times." x(

Oddly enough, it seems to take violence for any change to be made or for people who want to eliminate serious issues to be noticed.

In other words, if blocking some street corners will do some good - so much the better. But will it? All of the AMERICAN HEROES I mentioned took big-ass risks, and some paid with their lives.

Yes, there is lots of serious work to be done. But a visit to DC on Inauguration Day sounds like lots of fun. It's a bit far from Texas, but convenient to lots of DU'ers.

Isn't that what we just did? Did you check out the posts on this forum about vote fraud? We liberals could send 100 million to the polls and the republicans would "provide" 101 million. They have total control. The control the entire government, all the major news media, and every crazy right-wing fundamentalist brownshirt. I can't, in a million years believe that Bush got 3.5 million more votes than Kerry. I believe in my heart it was just the opposite. There are NOT that many fundamentalists in the country.

Never, ever believe another poll that tells you otherwise. I personally will never have confidence in the election system again. It stinks.

Or you can watch LOTR. For the classically-minded, "Peer Gynt" is a fine work.

71. Would you consider
Walt Starr a freeper troll? He's also of the opinion that the election wasn't "stolen." I agree.

As for the rest of the evidence if this person is a troll, you may be right.

However, don't label anyone without a tinfoil hat as being a troll. Unwise.

Can you think of a logical reason for paperless voting?

If so, please share.

75. I'm getting really tired of that phrase.
We HAVE to preach to the choir.

We are the nexus, the grassroots and from us the movement grows.

Anyone who thinks "preaching to the choir" is a waste of time either has a really poor understanding of how movements grow and change is effected or they are afraid of the potential change.

From now on, anyone who complains that we are "preaching to the choir" will score a moderator alert from me.

A planned multi-city protest would be more effective. The thought of millions in DC is appealing, but many people might be turned off because of winter time weather.
I'm not saying what you propose isn't a great idea, but just suggesting an alternative.

I was thinking more of the travel from all over to DC. Snow and sleet isn't as hard to deal with if you have to go downtown in your city, but traveling across the country in it might be a deterrent to some folks.

78. Protest by chanting SIEG HEIL!
We missed our chance last time, so let's do it now. In January, when King George is coronated again, we need to send a lot of protesters there...but we must be clever about it.

Here's my plan.

No signs, no T-shirts, no buttons, NOTHING to identify any of the protesters as being there to protest. Go there looking for all the world like sheeple ready to salute our Führer. This is to ensure the Renazicans can't cage the protesters away from the proceedings.

Now for the protest...one which will be heard around the world, and let Planet Earth know that half of us KNOW what a Nazi he is.

When Bush's limo goes by, all the protesters simultaneously do the straight-arm salute and start chanting, "Sieg heil! Sieg heil!" Even if the news people cut away from the visual, the audio will still be there, broadcast live all over the country and the world.

We've GOT to do this, people. We canNOT protest in the usual way, because it will just result in mass arrests and the media will be able to ignore the protest. Doing it my way, however, will take everyone by surprise...harmless, yet very, very meaningful. Please spread this idea to everyone you know, so word can get to anyone who's going to DC. Due to illness, I can't (I'm awaiting a disability determination). But this has got to be done, to show everyone we see through Bush's agenda.

To hell with what Kerry said...we do NOT share common views with this monster, and we must protest to let him know that his "mandate" is all smoke and mirrors.

83. Pro-Shrub groups will request permits to gather along parade route
And there will be little space for protestors. In 2001 only one anti-Shrub group managed to get a permit. Your idea is interesting, but if you want to get anywhere near the parade, you'll need a permit.

I was there for the 2001 Coronation and plan to go again in 2005. Warning, last time it snowed most of the day.

79. Sounds good to me....
If we can organize this to the point where we get close to the same number of people that showed up for the protests in NY during the RNC

..not only could we have a huge march to close down the streets..but we could also seed all of us on both sides of the street along the procession line at the very front, and as the motorcade comes by we can all turn our backs in protest which would surely get captured on camera by all the various news crews that will be there filming.

82. mosh
A lot of people for whatever reason, cannot go. But you guys could wear the hoodies, and people without hoodies could wear black, or black armbands. To see a sea of black hoodies would be a excellent photograph for media. I'll wear a hoodie that day, wish I could be with you guys. Bush's team will be working overtime to hide you, (same as he did campaigning) but the media can't ignore you. You can also film it yourselves, unite with other groups, etc.

And just a soap box minute : Look, ignore the freepers. To have their kicks, we have to respond. They want a show, well without an audience, there is no show. Let them gloat with each other. It's meaningless. One way or another, we will prevail. We don't see how right now, and I know I despaired, but we aren't beaten. We see what's going on. I think Bush and his cronies will crumble from within. I have a chocolate theory. Goes like this. You crave chocolate (power) and suddenly you get almost all there is in the world by stealth (the election) and you consume it, and consume it, and consume it. Eventually, you sicken. That's my hope for them.

okay soap box off. Feel free to use chocolate theory, which will be my name if I ever get to change it, sigh.

There is every reason to have a huge screaming protest! What could possibly be more important. Perhaps such a demonstration would temper his "I have a mandate" noise.

...but not because I believe the election was stolen (and I do), because if that's the basis for the protest the media will portray us as a bunch of crackpots.

I'd like to be there for one reason and one reason only: So George W. Bush can see with his own eyes what kind of a 'mandate' he has. When he's tempted to appoint judges to overturn Roe v. Wade, or tries to push his constitutional amendment, or turn us into a theocracy, I want him to remember the screaming, angry mobs at his second inauguration and KNOW that he doesn't have a 'sweeping mandate' to FUCK OUR COUNTRY.

109. Don't be silly. No violence!
Don't advocate violence against the city or the pResident. The city itself has done nothing to you. No matter if individual or even collective politicians have been slimy corrupt cowards, the city itself has a grand history and represents the best ideals of this country. To even THINK about causing violence to Washington, D.C. should make you re-ealuate what kind of person you are.

Advocating violence against the pResident (I know you didn't) would just get you on a list somewhere and might get you thrown in jail. Besides, if something happens to Chump, Cheney will be pResident.

I told my husband on election night that I wanted to go to Washington and be part of any group planning to protest. He's all for it.

I wore a black hoodie to vote, I can wear a black hoodie to protest.

It would have to be done in such a manner as to not alienate everyone with opposing views. Done in such a manner that we could not be labeled extremists.

All of us could just stand there quiet and peaceful. No chants, No picket signs. Only groups of speakers to address the media. Some of us with American flags. Maybe even standing in formation across the lawn. Now that would get the world's attention.

Let them know we serious and that we are watching everything they do. Everything.

120. Any group of people here who want to organize something specific
say, in their state or city, or perhaps work on spreading the idea of a general strike:

I've got a private, password-protected area set up with groupware installed (anyone who knew about and tried it earlier -- it was buggy and I ended up reinstalling the mess).

It's not a substitute for the open discussion of DU. It's purpose is to be a low-volume, no noise, place to organize and plan No need to weed through 15 pages and 20 irrelevant posts to get to what you want, and ability to post things that you wouldn't want to post on a public bulletin board (though do keep in mind that the FBI can probably find out what's being said).
