In Orlando this summer, armed state police officers questioned elderly Black voters in their homes as part of an investigation of "voting irregularities" in the city's 2003 mayoral election. Many were members of the Orlando League of Voters, which has been successful in mobilizing the city's Black vote;
In South Dakota's June 2004 primary, Native American voters were prevented from voting when they could not present photo identification cards, even though South Dakota law does not require them; In Texas this year, a local district attorney threatened to prosecute students at a large, predominately Black college if they registered to vote in the county, although the law entitles them to do so and in Florida, the secretary of state, a Republican, secretly prepared a list of alleged felons to purge from the voter rolls.
