Maybe we can view this election as an opportunity |

Bush campaigned in states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin etc. and did not win those states. In the future the Republicans will continue to campaign in these states and probably will not be successful.
On our side, we didn't put much effort into states like Mississippi, Virginia and South Carolina, and we still got into the 40's. Maybe with a little work these states can be competitive. When a candidate does not campaign in a state and 4/10 vote for him regardless, I don't think it's an impossible situation.
In Missouri Kerry gave up over a months ago and still got around 46%.
Maybe I am being to optimistic, but I see the 30 Bush states as an opportunity.
For instance, I think people in the red states mostly are against abortion. We can all agree abortion is a bad thing, even if one is against making it illegal.
The Democrats should use abortion against the Republicans. Whenever the Democrats are effecting policy the number of abortions goes down. This is true. In the 60's and 70's when Democrats were in power, there were few abortions. In the 80's the number of abortions sky rocketed.
When Clinton was President, abortions went down, * is President abortions up 17%.
This is how you get anti-abortion people in southern states on our side. Some women have abortions because they feel they can't support and accomidate them. When Democrats are in power, these women are less likely to feel this way.

there is still old fashioned progressivism in these states, especially AR and MO (two states I know about).

2. An opportunity for what? For who? |

What does the Democratic party stand for, Tony?
Do you suppose we can run principled campaigns in those states, or do you think we should just emulate the Evil Ones? Or do you have an alternative in mind?

3. I agree, we need to break apart the southern block where we are doing well |
|
We could grab up a few states, or at least make them fair game.

4. As one of the true blue Democrats James Carville once quipped, |

"Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining." <eg>
My Point: Give us a little time to regroup and pass into the acceptance phase before the "silver lining" pep rally?
No disrespect but I'm still dealing with some anger and depression.
