6. Video of Ohio Voter Suppression

This is my first post but I've been lurking since Nov 2! I didnt want this to get lost in another thread so I'm posting it here. Im not sure if this was already posted but there's a video available from Election night in Columbus. This is from a thread on dk titled: Video Footage of African American voter suppression in Ohio.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2004/12/22/143921/53

Its about 25 mins long. As I watched, my eyes slowly filled with tears...unbelievable....

Here's a mirror site for downloading

I'm kicking this really hard! :kick:

It's worse NV? Worse than what we've been told? Must be for you to get this upset, you're usually very calm. It's unbearable - for these creeps the civil Rights Movement was a blight... they make me sick. Please keep the faith. We will overcome - someday is NOW. I am up into the night and will try to download as soon as I can... Take care.

12. Niche, you are cool! I am this upset cuz in my red-necked county..
there aren't alot of us Dems, we are really underground here. But as I was watching this ...it occurred to me that this may have happened in Las Vegas where almost 50% of the population is minority and lower middle class ...and voiceless, essentially. If we were not shown this on national television as it was occuring in Ohio, it could have occurred in the areas the Repukes identified in other states as being zones they could pull this. How could we know this even happened in Las Vegas if we were unprepared for it? We were being told not to worry, the SOS was looking out for us ...

The other reason I am upset ...as I watched this, I remember laying in bed on election night ...with my laptop on, streaming Randi Rhoades and others on Air America Radio ...and some of them exclaiming about hearing people were still standing in line, at 8 to 9 at night trying to vote in Ohio and they'd been in line for hours...

I remember hearing that and being very concerned and suspicious....but watching it over 6 weeks later ...OH MY FECKING GAWD!!!! Why did we have to bear watching the chimp and his chimp band that night on national TV sitting around doing the chimp family does DC White House ...when Americans were being disenfranchised like this!!!! Those scenes of the people standing in the night in the rain ....the dedication they had to make their one individual vote count ....standing there, waiting and TRUSTING THE SYSTEM THAT SCREWED THEM YET AGAIN!!!

This needs to be shown on national TV NOW!! NOT A DAY MORE SHOULD GO BY!! THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE ALL BEEN FIGHTING FOR OVER THE PAST SEVERAL WEEKS!! IT IS THE IMAGES HERE!!!!

I want JOHN KERRY to see this!!!!

15. I am OUTRAGED!!!
Edited on Thu Dec-23-04 01:57 AM by Pam-Moby
How can they call this a fair election. I heard that people in line were sent home after midnight and was not allowed to vote at all. I live in MI and if I was to encounter some of the problems that those poor people went through that evening someone would have been picking themselves off the floor. Look how they turned elderly and disabled people away.

This is the first time seeing this clip. When did this one surface? Does Jesse and Conyers know about this one file that was just viewed?

was less than 20 minutes and if I had been in the shoes of one of those folks ....I fear I'd be in jail still...

Watching this I wondered how many of those people were standing in those lines to cover Kerry's back like I stood in line ...for alot less time...for the same reason??

7. I am really sorry you can't watch this!! It should have been in the news!
It is footage of interviews and scenes from polling places in Ohio in predominately black and/or poor communities, showing long lines of people standing, leaning against walls, out of doors in the rain with umbrellas, waiting for hours, in the dark, outside, waiting and waiting and some being told they have to sign a paper that says their vote don't count!!! It is heartbreaking for you see just regular people trying to vote ...having to leave cuz they had to go back to work after waiting two and three hours ...there are only 2 or 3 machines where over 3,000 people were voting ...and yet they had at least 5 machines for them during the primaries ...

There is no way in hell this was an accident.....

9. It's a video showing black voters inline.
And all the different ways their vote was being supressed(i.e. 3 voting machines for a precinct with 1400 reg. voters, power surges in the voting buildings, broken machines)at one point they showed one of the presiding judges at a voting station and she was on her cell phone trying to get "them" to bring more machines down. She made a comment about a warehouse with hundreds of voting machines. "They" of course brought nothing.

There is a woman at the end who had to come out for air and they would not let her back in... the protect election woman runing camera tried to help. Who is the woman that kept everyone out? The people outside comment about her - seems that they had been dealing with her authoritative behavior all day. Just amazing. More thugs on the ground. Who are these people?

11. I was expecting
something more than that. It was just kind of some narration about problems that had ALREADY HAPPENED when the cameras got there, and then some people in line. If that's all they got, it won't prove anything to anyone who doesn't want to hear it. SOME of those problems happen every election to some degree. King county, WA had some glitches too, and we're a totally Democrat area. I don't think the long line thing will go far either. Lots of places have always had really long lines. I mean the guy in the first video even says, long lines won't keep him from voting. Ever since I started voting, I've had to miss some work and stand in line for a long time (live in Seattle). I finally started voting absentee because I have a bad back and hate standing that long. But, lots of people have to do it. I'm not trying piss on the parade. Just saying that we need actual proof that something happened that doesn't happen to some degree every election in lots of places. Lines are nothing new.

You are minimizing a travesty that you obviously did not experience. Shame on you if you think this is acceptable in Ohio. The place where the SOS said he'd hand the election to Bush beforehand. The same place were the SOS tried to rule out voters by the paper that was used. I don't see how you can't see what is wrong with this picture. It's pretty BLACK AND WHITE to me.

37. You need to read up before making such blanket generalizations
There is so much evidence of massive voter manipulation it is not funny. Did you know three former voting machine techies have come out and told of illegal manipulation and voting machine tampering. Not, one, not two, but three. Not to mention 57,000 voting complaints and.... Oh I'm just tired. You need to read this board before claiming there is no evidence. I'm tired of spoon feeding you newbies. Well I guess I'm a newbie to some too. But at least I keep current.

38. 12 hour lines are something new!! Let me get this straight, if there is a
fifteen minute wait in a heavily Republican precinct that has fifteen working machines, and then a few miles away there is a 10 hour wait in a heavily Democratic African American precinct that has two machines, one of them broken, this is not suspicious to you?

Oh and let me see, Democratic registrations being torn up by Sproul and associates all across the country, while Republican registrations remain intact, so that people (Democrats) show up at the polls to vote thinking they are registered (of course their registration was destroyed so they are not)are given provisional ballots instead, then these are thrown out because no valid registration can be found. Hmmmmmm.......sounds like a normal fair and square, up and up election to me. As long as your vote counted right, what are these people complaining about?

Gotta love that glitch word too. You get the government you deserve. If this sham of an election process is ok with you, you must have really low expectations of what democracy is supposed to be about.

49. I'm in King Co
I have NEVER waited AT ALL- this year was the most time consuming yet and it took a whopping 10 minutes! We've never waited for one hour or 2 or 4 in the rain, not with fewer machines than in the primary, and I have NEVER heard of such discrepencies here between areas that serve minority communities.

And you have never missed half a day's work to vote in Seattle, have you? If you had, even JEAN freaking ENERSON would have covered you! *That* would have been a story here.

This video AT LEAST presents the serious implication of fraud. Or, maybe even worse; that we've completely peter-principled ourselves right out of the ability to maintain a democracy.

thrown into another line for 2 more hours... PLEASE I DOUBT your lines were THAT LONG. This is difference in this country - those who are compassionate and those who just don't give a s**t about people... THIS IS NOT OKAY! I live in a white "in the hills" of Hollywood neighborhood and we had 20 + voting machines... HELLO! WTF are you talking about? 3 machines??????? I'll say it again 20+ machines in white bread Hollywood Hills (in my small area alone) 3 machines in some of THOSE DISTRICTS in Ohio. But then, maybe we have a Secretary of State who gives a s**t...

14. The 4 hour poll tax is to me the clearest and most easily documentable
instance of defacto election fraud. The fact that the tax was overwhelmingly and disproportionatly levied on the poor, students, and people of color, ie, Democtatic voters, is so apparent.

I've read estimates of 15000 to 20000 voters leaving before casting votes.

If adaquite machines had been provided in those Demo precincts and lines created instead in the Republican strong holds the swing would be 30000 plus votes, conservatively.

25. Poll tax
That is brilliant - in a subdued way.

Let's start calling it that - the hours long poll tax.

Simple, concise, to-the-point, easy for most the understand: poll tax.

"The POLL TAX of the election was the six-hour long wait Jane Doe endured..."

"The POLL TAX consisted of the malfunctioning machines, the power surges..."

That's humanity.

Wanna get it in the MSM - this is how you do it.

I don't mean to be trite and unfeeling here - I'm not. I worked the primaries in a minority community. It's sad really that they aren't "expected" to vote so they're treated like crap when they do their civic duty.

I don't understand prejudice. I never have.

I couldn't finish watching the video, it made me so damn mad. In this day and age, there is NO WAY people should stand in those long lines to vote. And don't tell me the problem is not having enough election volunteers. And some of those people seemed to be in high spirits to vote for John Kerry.

This video should be shown to the Kerry camp and NOW!

I worked a minority polling place in Columbus and saw this stuff first hand. It was truly a life changing experience.

I could go on and on about some of the stories voters told me but what struck me the most was the simmering outrage. They knew what was happening and why.

Early in the AM, I worked an affluent polling place. More machines, fewer voters. At the peak, their wait was about an hour. This should have been shown in the video also.

35. Was it Franklin County? Police called in to remove voters waiting 4 hours
Edited on Thu Dec-23-04 06:29 AM by downstairsparts
just to get to the front of the line for a provisional ballot, and then to be told, sorry, you cannot cast that ballot. Either you have to get back on the 4-hour line to cast it or try voting at the County board office downtown, where you may have to wait another 4 hours. You insist on voting here? Well let me dial 911 and we'll see about that.

Hundreds of people waiting in line in the rain, long lines backing out of the building, across the street, and into the dark rainy woods. Unconscionable in this so-called democracy.

Old people, people with disabilities, working people with children who don't have the luxury of waiting 4 hours on lines. People who step outside for fresh air and aren't allowed back in to vote. People who shown up from some other place where they waited hours only to be told they could not vote. Time and time again. People denied the right to vote without their registration ID, a violation of Ohio Voting Bill of Rights. Much confusion as to precincts. But you don't necessarily know what your precinct is until you get to the front of the line you've been waiting in 4 hours because there's nobody allowed to work the lines to tell you you're in the wrong place. You belong in the precinct across the street. Oh! Look at the lines over there!! Wonder how many more hours that's going to be.

And to top it all off, when people insist on casting their voting at the precinct they are in, the precinct calls the cops on them!

From these videos, apparently only the strong or the leisure class were allowed to vote in Ohio.

As if the computer shift of votes into the Bush category wasn't good enough. As if they wanted to make sure they touched all bases of voter suppression, pull out all the stops. All of those responsible for this unbelievable massive voter manipulation and supression, from Blackwell on down, need to be arrested with no bond and tried with no leniency.

These are huge crimes against people who have little power to begin with. If Kerry does not speak out loudly about this and demand prosecution of all those responsible, rather than trying to shift this over to people like Jesse Jackson, he ought to be ashamed of calling himself a Democrat.

And the early ones according to the exit polls were either a) ashamed of Bush love or b) filled with hate for anybody to dare ask them who they voted for so they lied or c) they thought they voted for Kerry-HAH Fucking hah.

damn-while people are discussing whether we need to change our position on abortion-this went on!!

Oh and the other area that had fewest machines-the college area? Hmmm-I guess they figured out who the youth vote was going to.

42. another voting machine allocation study
Please check out this report I did on Franklin County Ohio voting machine allocation. This is additional proof, along with the work by Phillips and Knapp, of intentional and illegal voter suppression. You can download the whole report as a pdf. <http://www.indybay.org/news/2004/12/1708672.php>

43. Not just for Ohio...
Edited on Thu Dec-23-04 10:45 AM by adolfo
It was done in Florida also.

We voted early in Orlando Florida (Alafaya Trail) and stood in line for 2 hours. Was this also deliberate? Check out the official numbers and tell me what you think. Note: we are in a college area and most went for Kerry.

http://www.recountflorida.com/ivrs_precincts.php?county=orange
(check out "0809 EARLY VOTE ALAFAYA TRAIL")

..and that is just one location. It could be worse in other areas.

47. I worked the polls in Florida this year, voters waited for 2, 3, 4 hours
to vote even in the early voting. This country's election process is rigged against certain individuals voting period. But we common Americans powering the grass roots groups and organizations are going to put a stop to this evilness. Every vote must count or we are not a Democracy and this country's people are not represented by elected officials. In other words, we do not need to listen to them or follow their laws which we were not allowed to part of the creating thereof. No, you are not pushing the American voter around any more so get over yourself if you think you can.

46. I have a copy on DVD of this suppression from the hearing 2 weeks ago
Edited on Thu Dec-23-04 12:02 PM by GetTheRightVote
It is terrible how they treat these people who merely wish to vote. That is the biggest reasons I have been so fired up about getting involved as much as I possibly could. No one but no one should have to go thru what these individuals do to simply cast their vote. It is an evilness that I hope is brought down once and for all in this country which tells the world it is a Democracy.

48. I hate to tell you guys this but this isn't voter suppression!!!
I live in a White County, REPUBLICAN County, Wealthy County, and I waited 4 hours to vote in the rain, on and off. The people in these videos don't seem to be detered from voting, in fact their mood is upbeat. In one video you can hear a guy in the back ground who was talking to someone leaving who asks "Was it quick?" the answer was "Yes about 15 minutes!"

Waiting in line isn't suppression, not having proper procedures is bad but not necessarily suppression. I think there are some real issues in this election, but posting this as being tantamount to unleashing the dogs on minority voters makes us look silly.

Voter Suppression
Americans are not going to stand by and allow these acts of voter suppression! Acts which we're hearing about again in this election. Democrats are already planning to try and invalidate, throw out, and suppress the military vote just like they did in Florida in 2000. The DNC and the Kerry campaign are already setting up teams of lawyers to do just that throughout the United States in an effort to cheat in this election as they tried to do in 2000.

Kerry has a team of lawyers to examine possible voting problems to try to prevent a repeat of the 2000 election disputes. He also has said he has thousands of lawyers around the country prepared to monitor the polls on election day.

Allow me to interpret some of Kerry's phraseology:
"possible voting problems" meaning Bush voters
"repeat of 2000 election" meaning not enough military ballots thrown out
"monitor the polls on election day" meaning Bush voter intimidation

55. Truman01, the distribution of voting problems that created long lines
was overwhelmingly found in strong Democratic precincts.

This doesn't mean that some Republian precincts didn't experience the 4 hour poll tax, only that the distribution of the "problems" was no where near evenly distributed.

If you are a single parent with young children, yes, your vote was repressed, unless you wanted to open yourself up to child abuse charges as you waited in line in the rain with screaming hungrey children until after midnight.

62. But is this really suppression?
Before we go and claim suppression by Republicans, do we know who was in charge of these precincts? I ask because I remember with the 2000 fiasco in FL, what republicans kept bringing up was that democrats were claiming suppression due to these same kinds of things...yet a majority of the precincts that had problems were run by democrats. I distinctly remember being a bit embarrassed because I was harping on this issue and this smug conservative asked why, if there were such problems, the democrats in charge of those precincts didn't make sure things were in proper order? I didn't know what to say to that. And I have to ask the same thing here. Aren't many, if not most, heavily democrat precincts run by democrats? Did they not count the number of machines for their precinct v. the number of registered voters before the polls opened? Did they not make sure there were enough forms, etc?

Another point I want to bring up is that we have to remember that while we all have the right to vote, we are responsible for making it happen. I am a single mom. and this year after news accounts of an incredible increase in voter registration, I anticipated long lines. Therefore, I made arrangements in advance for my neighbor to watch my daughter in case I had to wait in a line for hours, so she wouldn't have to. And as for the rain, it sucked...but gosh guys, we can't blame republicans because it rained.

I know everyone is frustrated, but it doesn't help our cause to embellish on things. We need to concentrate on true suppression...not just inconvenience. If we cry wolf too many times, then people are going to stop listening.

64. The Secretary of State is responsible for oversite of any and all
county election boards. County election boards are in charge of the precincts.

This is America. A 4 hour poll tax is unexeceptible and when it is applied so unevenly it is fraud. And some people had to wait 10 + hours to vote. Your neighbor may have been OK with 4 hours but would it have been OK to show up at 1 AM and pick up your daughter?

Also, of course, we have a broader pattern of suppression. Attempts by the Ohio SOS to disqualify thousands of registrations, to keep the poll sign in books hidden, to close polls while voters were still in line even. It's the pattern of policy and action taken together as a whole that demonstrates suppression of the vote. Heck, in Penn, a prominate Republican politician even said that for Bush to win they were going to have to suppress the vote in Detroit. He knew it and so do we.

Who is blaming the rain on the Republicans? Or is that something you felt was relevant to the discussion? You are the first to bring this up as somehow related to vote suppression.

When have we cried wolf even once, let alone too many times?

68. Poll tax?
I don't recall anyone being forced to pay anything to vote...

Those in charge of the precincts are in charge of letting the folks higher up know what they need. Those higher ups rely on the individual precincts to let them know what they need...that's their job.

As for the rain, I keep reading and hearing about how awful it was people standing in the rain. The rain was no one's fault, so it shouldn't be added it to the equation of alleged suppression. It creates an embellishment and dramatics that are way to commonly put into discussion of this issue, IMHO. Folks rapidly lose patience and desire to listen, when the truth is embellished upon. Embellishment changes the tone of a true complaint and turns it into a whine. And whiners are tuned out and ignored by most.

You need to do some research and then your words will have some weight. All I've seen thus far are right-wing talking points a la Hannity/O'Reilly.

So far we've seen you stick up for CEOs making 4,000 times their average workers, and poo poo any racism involved in voting fraud. So who did YOU vote for?

65. Words from the filmmaker.....
Edited on Thu Dec-23-04 07:38 PM by Seemann For Congress
This is reposted from Daily Kos, but the words are for everybody.

Thu Dec 23rd, 2004 at 09:31:17 PST

Many of you saw the footage of voter suppression in Ohio when it was posted last night. If you missed it, here's the diary - http://www.dailykos.com/story/2004/12/22/143921/53

I just got off the phone with the filmmaker (she's an old friend). She put the whole thing together and wants it spread as FAR as possible as FAST as possible.

She has copies of MUCH better quality available and she wants it shown far and wide. So if you are interested (and you'd better be, dammit), PLEASE e-mail her right away at linda_byrket at yahoo.com - she will get you a 50MB .move file.

Her site, which hosted the original copy of the higher-quality film, is down right now. When it comes back up (shortly), she'll be calling me, and I will copy the file and mirror it on my site - http://www.jeff04.com . I would urge as many of you to do the same (you will be free to copy it from my site.

Furthermore, there will be an event on January 3rd in Columbus, Ohio. I do not know the details of this event, but Linda assures me it will be HUGE. It will be just days before Congress counts the Electoral Votes, and will be our last chance to protest this election. Details will be posted on the event when I get them.

I've watched with great interest throughout the Ohio wars and have stayed out of most of the discussions. But this one I want to interject myself into - video footage cannot be denied. So PLEASE recommend this diary and get her film distributed as much as you can.

In Solidarity,
Jeff Seemann
