Classic quote from WA State Supreme Court Justice Owens
Edited on Thu Dec-23-04 01:54 AM by pk_du
talking to the Repug Lawyer representing Rossi(R)

"``You're looking at it from the point of view of the winner or the loser — shouldn't we be looking at it from the point of view of the voter?'' asked Justice Susan Owens."

...obviously a smart judge....and no place on a Renquist/Scalia court for her!

14. Rethugs know they can win elections only
if the votes are not properly counted. How many times do they need to remind the electorate of this fact before even their own flock wanders away?

3. Bring that up!
Kick it! :kick:

When a Republican or a go-with-the-flow Democrat says to you, "It won't change the vote - it won't change the election," you say: "You're looking at it from the point of view of the winner or the loser — shouldn't we be looking at it from the point of view of the voter?"

Ta-da!

4. Yes! I just watched the end of the WSC hearing from Wednesday AM...
I was so impressed by the integrity of the elections official who spoke and the attorney for the (Republican) SOS, Sam Reed, who seemed to be much more concerned with doing a good job of the election and looking out for the voters than any partisan drivel.

It was inspiring. The attorney for Rove-Rossi made all the expected whiney arguments about why the votes shouldn't be counted, and the Dem's attorney came right back at them and said the only harm that will come from those votes being counted is that your candidate may lose, and that is not a valid argument.

To think that those thugs showed up dressed up in orange outside the Temple of Justice in Olympia, screaming fraud! And how their attorney said those ballots are no good because they were left unattended and open, in a tray, for one night. The election official came right back and said, No, they were guarded at all times.

The nerve of the Republicans, after what they've been pulling in Ohio. At least this paves a path that shows what integrity in a recount looks like.

5. When I read that I was amazed.
She gets it. A judge actually gets it. Something the Supremes forgot about in the 2000 election. The point of view of the voter!!!!!! What a concept.

18. Thank you. I sent her a short note.
Dear Justice Owens:

I tuned in to C-SPAN yesterday to watch the WA Supreme Court hear arguments regarding the gubenatorial recount. I admit that much of it was lost on me due to my unfamiliarity with such legal matters, however one of your comments struck a chord. I very much appreciated you pointing out to the parties involved that the matter should not be viewed from the perspective of a winner or a loser, but rather from the point of view of the voter. I was extremely gratified to hear such common sense being stated from the bench. I do hope your comment was not lost on any interested parties. As with most constituents I would imagine, I am weary of the political parties wrangling for wins at any cost rather than respecting the rights and wishes of the voters.

Best Regards,
_____________
