What was the name of the opposition party to Hitler?
I can't remember. I am sure most here cannot. Point is - not to be harsh - but the Democratic party will be remembered the same way as that party in Germany if WE can't foil stolen elections.

It wasn't a 'party' but an organized underground organization of rebels.

we need to take it to the world! it's called ECONOMIC WARFARE. As long as we're feeding the "machine" with our hard earned dollars, they're always going to treat us like crap! We need to hit them where it hurts instead of fueling them with more money.

10. No. The German left was fractured before Hitler became Chancellor.
The Communist Party (assuming you mean the German wing of the international Communist Party) provided little if any resistance to the Nazis once they consolidated.

20. I take offens to that statement
The communist and the socialists were fighting the Nazis to the bitter end.Just because it didn't make the front page doesn't mean there was no fight.
My great uncle,my mother and father and many, many others were fighting the Nazis every day.Plastering leaflets all over the cities, helping people escape, etc. You have no idea what you're talking about.I grew up with those people,I know what they went through,I know how they died.
When thye finally captured my great uncle, they tatooed a SS# on his arm and send him to the russian front. My mother and father moved to Prague and continued the fight with the resistance there.
Don't tell the people here there was no resistance! It is simply not true!

12. Communism no difference than Crony Capitalism...
Both controlled by a selected few elite. Both would keep you working for a long time at a dead-end job. Both is about control of the masses.

We need to come up our own system.

8. None - "Gleichschaltung"
Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 01:08 AM by Fenris
Shortly after the election of March 5, 1933, in which the Nazis won 43.9% of the vote, Hitler presented the Reichstag with the Enabling Act, which, if approved by a two-thirds majority would allow him to govern for 4 years sans parliament. The proposal passed on the 23 of March with help from the Center party. All communists and some Social Democrats were forbidden to vote. Hitler used the Enabling Act to begin the gleichschaltung (synchronization), the process of establishing one-party rule in Germany. Left-wing political parties were banned first. In July of 1933, the Reich was declared a one-party state. That was the end of opposition to Hitler.

Frankly, I think it's a bad analogy.

9. Maybe in the way Hitler played it out
it is a bad analogy. But-- no one remembers the Social Democrats or anything they did to stop Hitler. I bet they played by the rules. I bet anything they "took the high road". We still have a chance. If we don't take it, we become the Social Democrats.

16. The Social Democratic Party of Germany
Basically, the Socialists.

They got nearly as many votes as the NSDAP (Nazis) did in the '36 election, but Hitler won. And the rest we know.

17. lots
on the left you had the Communist and Social Democrats
then you had the "center" parties made up of Christian Democrats
and on the right you had the German People's party.

Franz Von Papen maneuvered a coalition of center and right wing parties to put Hitler in a position to force Pres. Hindenburg into making Hitler Chancellor. Von Papen would then be made Vice Chancellor and (what he was hoping) Hitler's "puppet master". He underestimated Hitler though, and was fortunate to survive the "Night of the Long Knives" later.

21. The SPD, the Social Democrats
Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 04:31 AM by Kellanved
Which is Schröders Party today. They were the only party to vote against the enabling act and unlike the communists didn't pursue a "nach Hitler wir" (After Hitler it's our turn) strategy.

Strictly speaking it wasn't real the opposition party; Hitler's NSDAP wasn't an established party, the traditional counterpoints were the SPD and the Christian Zentrum Party. So, when the NSDAP became big all of a sudden, the democratic and communist parties were caught off-balance.

But, as the Zentrum allied itself with Hitler and the SPD didn't realize (individuals did, but not the party as a whole) the true danger until far too late. The communist party was banned, it's MPs removed from the Reichstag. The point of no return, the last possible moment to unite the left against Hitler had been missed. Without the communists, Hitler had the majority in parliament to push trough the enabling act; ending any political opposition.

The MPs killed in concentration camps and other Nazi prisons:

22. Initially it was the Communist Party and the Social Democrats.
Later, it was the White Rose Society, who wielded no political power but influenced civilian resistance.

24. The White Rose society
Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 09:05 AM by Markaren
was a group of students and professors who organized leafletting and public displays of dissent against Hitler's 3rd Reich. 'The White Rose lives'is perhaps a good motto for the coming resistance to this 4th Reich. Unfortunatley the original White Rose members were all executed when caught. How long before that happens here? There's a good German movie (with subtitles) about them.
