Hit them where it hurts: the pocketbook.
General Strike at key times, and party-based boycotts of offending anti-democratic corporations (ie, major media outlets).

The government can't make you work, can't make you buy, can't program you to do either if you don't let them.

Gyre

1. Thinking the same thing.
to pick a day during the holiday season and purchase nothing, no gas, water, heat, electricity, etc. 50,000,000 people doing that would certainly shake things up. What do you think?

See links

This is the day after Thanksgiving (biggest shopping day, yadda yadda), and has been going on for some time now. Print out flyers and get on board.

18. That's silly.
It's unsustainable.

However "buy only Democrat", not just for one day, but for your entire life might.

15. I like your idea,
but I don't think it will work. Companies are not so volatile that they will collapse if sales are down on one day.

On the other hand, dramatic lifestyle changes WILL have an impact. Giving up cars in favor of busses/bikes, no more Starbucks, cancelling cable tv and quitting jobs at big offices in favor of cutting grass or working at a small business who treats employees fairly COULD send a message.

On the other hand, fighting the Bush corporate agenda might be unwinnable. I hope not.

Wrote a letter to a local (small) business last night. In the spring I overheard the owner talking about how 'the Clintons lie and lie ...'

Well f*ck her. I explained precisely why I'll never shop there again (it's a knitting store, I spend a *lot* in knitting stores).

Cancelled my local paper (endorsed *).

12. Absolutely - preempt the PNAC agenda
there is nothing they can do without a strong economy, and they can't have that without the dems on board. Forget the one day idea though, unless you want to gauge the impact with a yawn-meter.

19. Good site. I'll check it out when I have more time.
I've seen many, many threads on this topic. Maybe we need to consolidate here on DU somewhere. Could a moderator design something that's not a thread, but something larger such as they did at the top of the first page?

By the way, I've become very savvy in the past 4 years about where to spend my money and what to do without. It's actually lots of fun and gives you great satisfaction.

21. Here's an anecdote for you....
Today I went to a neighboring town - one of the wealthiest areas in the country - used to have a very vibrant downtown for a small town. I hadn't been there for quite some time just to walk around downtown. I couldn't believe how many storefronts were empty and "For Lease" signs up. Now, I know that rich people hate it when their storefronts are empty and business is bad. This is what needs to happen more and more. I know that my little effort by itself probably has next to no affect, but together, one by one, it will.

I would like to add that this town in the wealthy area probably, I don't know for sure yet because I haven't researched it, voted for Kerry, so I'm not putting this particular place down. Actually, I'd be willing to bet the upper middle class people voted for Kerry over Bush and the white trash voted for Bush.

I don't advocate bringing them in for that purpose.

I favor finding employment that is independent and cash-based, participating in an underground economy where no revenue is declared, no taxes are paid. I'm fed up with sending my hard-earned dollars to Bush's pockets so he can murder 100,000 women and children in Iraq. Let Republicans pay for Bush's holy wars. It's the ethically moral thing to do.

And file lawsuits wherever possible. Flood the court system with challenges to each and every immoral law and executive order signed by Bush. Make the Bush government spend money and time defending itself.

23. My family has already decided to do this. We figure we will be pretty
stingy for the next four years and actually have lots of money to spend when we win next time and it will really boost the economy when we take office.

I finally stopped crying when my brother and I decided that it may be for the best that Kerry didn't get elected. Kerry would have inherited such a mess and everyone would have blamed him for Bush's crap because it is all going to start having a real affect on our country in the next few years. We were on the train and we did everything we could to stop the wreck. The stupid people kicked us off so we are just going to get a bag of popcorn and enjoy watching the carnage...

25. Obviously you haven't turned on the mainstream news media today....
If you had you would see how in just three days Bush's reselection has turned the economy around overnight. Where the hell have you been? Jobs are popping up faster than you can shake a stick at and the stock market is soaring - soaring I say! Hey, get on the KoolAid bandwagon. Those tax cuts are working!

(Major sarcasm and bitterness here.)

30. Dont worry about it...
At the rate we are outsourcing jobs, wages going down not up, and better GDP is a euphamisn for "the slaves are working their asses off harder than ever, harder than last year, and harder than the year before, this economy will crash and burn. When the minions can't afford to live in their own country and put money into the economy the big boys will realize they fucked up. They are so blind though, it will take a stock market crash that makes the Great Depression look like a picnic. I am convinced it is coming. It is only obvious.
