Election Day leftovers

1 hour, 45 minutes ago Op/Ed - USATODAY.com

(snip)

In Washington state, the gubernatorial election has been through three recounts and stands a mere 130 votes apart. Democrat Christine Gregoire is on top in the final tally, a reversal of the original result, and Republicans are weighing their next steps, with legal challenges in the offing. In dispute are votes overlooked or disqualified earlier.

(snip)

Ohio's votes for president are being recounted. And two court challenges, involving the presidential race and a major statewide race, seek to have the election thrown out altogether because of machine malfunctions, the double-counting of some ballots and a failure to provide adequate numbers of voting machines, particularly in predominantly minority precincts. The evidence, however, does not suggest that the discrepancies would give John Kerry (news - web sites) enough votes to overtake President Bush (news - web sites) in the state that decided the race.

(snip)

•Counting errors. A review of election results in 10 counties nationwide by the Scripps Howard News Service found more than 12,000 ballots that weren't counted in the presidential race, almost one in every 10 ballots cast in those counties. When the mistakes were pointed out to local officials, some were chagrined; others said they didn't want to be bothered correcting mistakes.

•Machine malfunctions. In Ohio, 92,000 ballots failed to record a vote for president, most of them in areas still using discredited punch-card technology, and an unknown number were counted twice. Optical-scan systems failed to record votes in parts of Arkansas. Glitches in new high-tech electronic machines gave Bush extra votes in at least one Ohio county and wiped out thousands of votes in others across the country.

2. Nothing to see here. Move along.
Just what does it take to help people see what is going on? If there are stories like this that only receive five votes in two hours, what does this say about apathy? Are we the only people who care about our country? There are other stories that do merit higher viewing, but most don't, IMHO.

Drink the Koolaid. Move along.

5. We do know better, but the Rethugs blocked necessary reforms to HAVA!
Last paragraph of article:

"It's not Ukraine, still just a fledgling democracy. But two centuries of experience should have taught us to do better."

And the Democrats diid not let out a peep about it. I cannot understand why they did not scream before the election. Are they that naive about the Bushies! We certainly tried to warn them.

10. I gave it a 5 too.
But the response page is frozen (not fully loading). Maybe this means their server is swamped with people rating the story? :-)

8. Election Day Leftovers? I'm holding out for the gourmet meal thanks.
That will be the moment the MSM learns that this story, is way to massive to be served up on paper plates as leftovers. Until then, they'll keep serving it along with the Kool Aid and we, who know better, will keep the champagne chilled.
I'll go rate the story however, give it a little kick...

Thanks for the post.

11. Geez, what's with all of the qualifiers in that article?
It's nice that the media is mentioning a tiny slice of what's going on with the election.

However, the first few paragraphs of the article seems like Republican-mandated copy.

It's as if reporters get their marching orders from the Republicans, "Ok, ok---you can mention some of the election irregularities, but you must first write a few paragraphs explaining that our election was honest and went off smoothly--and please stress that this is not a Ukraine situation!"

Even in these articles, where the little crumbs of election fraud are mentioned--it's as if the reporters go out of their way to stress how honest and fair our elections were--except for a few annoying anomalies.

It's hard to see only crumbs of the story reported---when there's an entire smorgasbord of fraud out there.

It would be nice, if just one of these lazy, corporate-owned MSM members would do their job.

This article leaves it to the reader to ask the hard questions. I wish they had included something about Blackwell's request for a protective order so he doesn't have to answer questions by lawyers.

Question #1: Blackwell, what are you hiding?
Question #2: Blackwell, why are you so afraid of Cliff Arnebeck?

14. I'd like to know how many peolpe had to leave without voting
because the lines were so long and they were elderly or had to get back to work, etc. If there were just and average of 10 people per precinct, that would be enough to throw the election to Kerry. I remember in the Votergate video an observer said he estimated at least 30 people left without voting just in the time he'd been there.
