can expect an investigation of some sort, by some federal agency...

Can't you just hear the Discover execs talking to their ad men? "You idiots! You helped all those people dress in orange hats, and now Brother Bush and Brother Rove think we were trying to send some sort of message about the election being illegitimate! You're fired!"

how ironic? the fireworks off my balcony that i could see in the distance were mostly orange and red. My daughter kept saying, "Mommy, how come they're all orange?" And in the back of my head, I thought, they must know about the election....

And I remember Sheila Jackson Lee saying that red is also a color that stands for democracy.....

had no symbolism besides an advertisment. lol

most poeple at the ball drop are from out of town. check out the daily news.

59. roenyc you should do more research, orange is indeed symbolic
The wearing of orange hats started as a symbolic "FU" to the constant pumped up "terror alerts" NY always received during the holiday season. As a NY'er I'm surprised you don't know that. Started big time last year and it really caught fire. People supplied their own orange hats or orange hair, then. Discover picked up on it and this year distributed the hats because they r so loved in NY.

Orange fashionable? I'm sorry but that remark was too funny! Only time its fashionable in NY is on New Years Eve.

I thought it was beyond funny & ironic that the orange jester hats popped up this year when Colin Bowell was our "guest". How fitting!LOL!! Thank you Discover for helping us get that point across.

roenyc, I'm surprised that as a NY'er you havent picked up on something else....notice no big "terror alerts" in NY this holiday season? We would get them every year, but oddly enough, not this year. Of course not....election is over, bush is safe, and its the 1st christmas since 2001 that we havent had bush try to put the fear of God into us.

I'm so proud of this city, we never did give into bush or anyone else, we have all tried to live as normal a life as possible since 9/11. And dont forget our giant "monkey bush" billboard. God I love this town!

Orange is actually not a big color in fashion this year. It was a couple of years ago. Not a coincidinky so many people were wearing orange. Yes lots of people from out of town go to NYC to watch the ball drop, but chances are they saw the Ukrainian protests too. Lots of New Yorkers go to Times Square on New Year's Eve, not just out of towners, and it was a beautiful warm night in the city last night, that brings out lots of locals.

from the NY Times:

The orange hats were bothering Regis Philbin. They were puffy, pompommed and jester-style, and the Discover Card company had managed to distribute them early on to what looked like three-quarters of the million people reported to be in Times Square last night.

53. i dont have issues, just that this isn't an orange thing
and you guys are making it into something it isn't. sorry to burst the bubble. i have lived here all my life. i know whats up. OK.

and its ridiculous to keep insisting that they are wearing orange hats for any other reason then they got them for free.

and I will also add if anyone has orange hair and scarf, the reason is ONE: they are fashionable and from NY but more likely they are actually from Ukraine! or other European country.

NYC is a tourist mecca. it was a nice night so there may have been more city dwellers then usual. but its mostly an out of town thing.

hell just trying to help by providing clippings.

sometimes you need to fact the facts! this was NOT a statement. Perhaps i should have kept quiet and let you all keep thinking new yorkers are wonderful and hip and know all thats going on.

and yeah we have a great liberal community but that is not who goes to watch that ball drop. its kind of a commerical waste of money. and against most of our principles.

so sorry if i hurt anyones feelings. but i guess i should have explained how many of us feel about that celebbration in times square from a city with a damn school system that doesnt have a spare dime.

94. What isn't there, is now.
It may have only been a random marketing ploy, but it doesn't mean it stays that way. We've been hand fed a headstart on a good protest project. Orange all over the media.

Syncronicity made it happen. Maybe it's a sign we are on the right track.

I say Kerry On! Wear orange and make it a statement. Now.

50. Yep. The universe works in mysterious ways alright. How ironic.
And Powell was there? That cracks me up! How it must have looked to people around the world.
It's a very good omen. It is like the foreshadowing in a movie.

55. This is what a friend of mine calls a "dreamed up phenomenon" ...
events that manifest in non-linear way to reflect collective unconscious truths seeking liberation into the light of consciousness. Such events often appear as "coincidental" in some way. In other words, it doesn't really matter whether Discover Card "intended" to do. Whether they like it or not, they got unwittingly drafted into the role of catapulting a delicious and timely symbolic signal to the whole country and the watching world, with the unwitting help of MSM (LOL). A very auspicious sign me thinks.

60. Orange hats are symbolic & didn't start with Discover
The wearing of orange hats started as a symbolic "FU" to the constant pumped up "terror alerts" NY always received during the holiday season. Started big time last year and it really caught fire. People supplied their own orange hats or orange hair, then. Discover picked up on it and this year distributed the hats because they r so loved in NY.

I thought it was beyond funny & ironic that the orange jester hats popped up this year when Colin Bowell was our "guest". How fitting!LOL!! Thank you Discover for helping us get that point across.

Has anyone else picked up on the fact, there havent been any big "terror alerts" in NY this holiday season? We would get them every year, but oddly enough, not this year. Of course not....election is over, bush is safe, and its the 1st christmas since 2001 that we havent had bush try to put the fear of God into us.

I'm so proud of this city, we never did give into bush or anyone else, we have all tried to live as normal a life as possible since 9/11. And dont forget our giant "monkey bush" billboard. Along with the orange hats, hair, clothes etc, it shows there is no great love for bush in this town. Thats another reason I love living in NY!

61. I am just an occasional visitor but I love NYC too!

And orange ribbons were used to protest the vote theft after 2000, so I love the continuity.
Very serendipitous for Discover to hand out orange hats this year.
Have they ever handed out hats before? Perhaps, since they are pretty rw, they wanted to dilute the genuine orange effect.
Nah, my tin must be too tight!

Edit to add: I love the dreamed up phenomenon idea. I wonder if some marketing career at Discover is over?

I forgot about the orange also being symbolic of the vote theft of 2000! You're right! Add that to the NY "FU" orange to bush and his "terror alerts" too! Gotta love it!

69. more photos - someones personal page
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rion/

the media just called them orange hats. they were given out by discover. every year they give out goodie bags and this year they also gave out plastic discover cards the person who got the orange one won something.

some pages are saying the hats are in relation to the terror level being raised to orange. but nyc is always orange.

70. I love imagining Bush watching all this on TV last night
I'll bet he wasn't smirking ..rather... scowling. whincing. squirming.
on the other hand, he may be so clueless as to have not made the connection. Either way, this is a very sweet omen.

73. Inquiring intelligent abstract minds want to know: A little education
First off: Orange is symbolic of the Ukrainian protest to their fraudulent elections. Blue is the color of the our states that voted so strongly Kerry that they could not flip the votes any longer without
immediate foul being called.

Second off: the tall hats represent New Yorks era of the GANGS of New York Tammany Hall and Lincoln era: http://www.baronhats.com/Bill_B.htm

http://www.herbertasbury.com/gangsofnewyork/
THE GANGS OF NEW YORK, written by Herbert Asbury, was used as the basis for the movie GANGS of NEW YORK, a gangster film directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio. Filmed in Rome, Gangs covers a period of New York City's history, from the 1840's through to the bloody Draft Riots of 1863, at a time when graft and corruption permeated every level of government including the police department.

Third: Need to watch the Movie: http://www.popmatters.com/film/reviews/g/gangs-of-new-york.shtml
