Anybody willing to give Bush a chance?
Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 08:49 PM by HFishbine
I know we have every reason to believe that this may be flight of fantasy, but what is the best case scenario?

Maybe Bush will find something in himself, or perhaps for the purely political purpose of positioning the party as the populist party in 2008 he'll surprise us all. Perhaps:

SAME-SEX MARRIAGE
Bush really does mean it when he says that the issue of civil unions should be left up to the states. Maybe we do end up with several states recognizing same sex-marriages in the next four years, and the Bush administration not moving against them.

The likely counter attack by fundamentalist, who Bush is now obligated to placate, will be a Constitutional amendment. Bush probably knows it safe to say he supports this, because he knows it will never pass. Even at this nadir of Republican power, there are simply not enough Republican-controlled state legislatures to give a constitutional amendment a thumbs up from two thirds of the states (Damn! Thank you Thomas Jefferson -- or was it Monroe?). For the next four years, gay marriage will remain a state issue, and we may even see some small progress state by state.

Of course, this issue is also likely to be greatly affected by George W. Bush's supreme test...

THE SUPREME COURT
This is where we discover what Bush is made of. Will he attempt to cast the will of his ever-so-slim majority onto the rest of us, or will he, in a moment of enlightenment, recognize that he will only drive a lasting wedge into America if he manages to appoint an ideologue? He promised he wouldn't apply an ideological test to judges.

Of course the weakened Democrats in the senate will have a say. Having had a number of pieces taken off the board, the Dems need to castle around a core set of values, and first among those should be to make sure Republicans don't push ideology onto the Court. If they stick together, then can keep an objectionable nominee off the court.

I'll add that if the Democrats fail to defend a number of core issues, it will be the end of the party. There will be nothing left but disparate pockets of self-interests if the Dems start to roll over for the Republicans. They should work with Bush on issues for which there is bi-partisan support, but they shouldn't trade away the things we just fought so damn hard for. With Daschle gone and newcomer Obama coming in, I have high hopes.

CABINET APPOINTMENTS
If 51% of the country is right, and correct, Bush is a man of conviction who means what he says. Maybe he really means it when he says he wants to bring the country together, and he'll actually do something meaningful to bring some healing. Could Wes Clark replace Colin Powell as Secretary of State? How about Michael Powell with Howard Stern? Any other possibilities for a Democrat in the administration?

Those are a few possible good outcomes. The senate is our stalwart against what we all fear may be the impending lunacy, but maybe some good will befall us, despite our current gloom. Of course, it all depends on whether or not president George W. Bush is a man of his word.

76. Here is the RW answer , though not as eloquent
In an article today by The Guardian, the RW wants their agenda addressed immediately, as pay back for *'s (re)election. This paragraph absolutely stuns me...

"It's crucial that the Republican leadership not forget this - as much as some will try ... Liberals, many in the media and inside the Republican party, are urging the president to 'unite' the country by discarding the allies that earned him another four years."

Now, what these supposed 'Christians' are saying is: unite, my ass! We don't want to unite, we want to dominate!
How Unchristian this is! These people believe in greed, not God. What are we going to do when they make their demands?

131. A question on payback
Well, what are the 'Christians' going to do if he doesn't give them everything they want?

Analogy: Howard Dean supporters backed Kerry, the more 'electable' (allegedly) candidate because we couldn't get our own guy over the top. Of the 48% ABB voters, only some fraction are original Deaniacs just as of the 51% "majority" only some fraction are fundies.

If Bush proves to be too moderate for them, what are they going to do? They can't put up their own guy in 2008 b/c the 51% won't go for it.

133. A good question, indigo
I don't think he can keep all his promises. The stunner, for me, was his approval of civil unions just a few weeks ago. What was that all about?
The good news is we only have to wait two years, not four, to have another chance to get some congressional seats back from his missteps. I'm counting on that!

The RW is a group of hypocritical thumb-sucking 6 year olds that want to be tucked in every night and read a bedtime story, yeah, that one, by this pompous ass.
And now, they promise to kick and scream and throw a tantrum if they don't get their pay-back legislation passed by springtime!

When the repug implosion starts, 2008 will be a whole different ballgame.

106. My sentiments, exactly
First, heard on ABC that there is one member of Congress - not sure whether an old one or a new - that wants the death penalty for those who perform abortion.

Second, it is really not up to Bush. The movers and shakers of the Republican party were looking for a pretty face with the right connection to run and to carry their agenda and they selected Bush Jr. Thus, even if he, personally, wants to "unite" and wants to be nice, they won't let him.

We cannot give Bush a chance any more than we can give any puppet one.

Why should the world turn upside-down? Does this idiot have any idea what his party did to Clinton for 8 years? He should feel lucky to have avoided imprisonment.

I hold out hope that someone in the house will stir up enough shit that *Stupido won't be able to get a single good night's sleep over the next 4 years. Kerry for minority leader? Where is our Ken Starr?

Too many good points here about why Bush doesn't deserve an immediate investment of our goodwill at this time, but I guess what I'm wondering is if there are things he can do with at least some consideration for the other half of the country? I'm just saying that if Bush grows as a man, a leader and a human being, any moderation would be a pleasant surprise.

37. In re: Same gender marriage
He has pushed hard for the Federal Marriage Amendment, while recently saying that he could support states-rights to civil unions.

The current version of the FMA states:

"Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman.

Neither this Constitution, nor the Constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman."

The bold section noted above would bar the states from creating civil unions.

Again, the two faces of bush*.

he's intent on making things worse. In *'s first press conference, he basicaly said F*ck yourself to anyone who does not go along with the PNAC master plan...

WASHINGTON Nov 4, 2004 — Contending Americans have embraced his conservative agenda, President Bush pledged Thursday to aggressively pursue major changes in Social Security, the tax code and medical malpractice awards, working with Democrats if they are receptive and leaving them behind if they're not.

"I earned capital in the campaign, political capital, and now I intend to spend it," Bush said a day after a decisive victory that made him the first president in 68 years to win re-election and gain seats in both the House and Senate.

"I'll reach out to everyone who shares our goals," said Bush, who 24 hours earlier had promised to try to win over those who voted for his Democratic opponent.

I don't think fascists should be "given a chance". I do not use the term "fascist" as hyperbole, it is, I believe, an accurate description of what Bush is.

And where does this "51% of the country BS" come from? 51% of the 59% of registered voters who showed up at the polls voted for Bush. Thats every single right wing evangelical so called "Christian" and a bunch of fearful, ignorant people.

And the chimp has already declared that he has a mandate and will be aggressively pushing his agenda.

He announced that there will be a one question rule in press conferences.

He has announced that he will strongly push for SS and tax policy reform, even harder than last time.

He has lied about everything for 4 years. He spouted this same tired bullshit after the 2000 election, and in that one, he didn't have the rigged popular vote.

He will say one thing and do another, just like the last four years.
SCOTUS appointments will be RW nuts. Cabinet appointments will be cronies. The press is being re-leashed by new restritions to access. U.S. forces are being prepared for a full assault on Fallujah.

I hope you are just trying to hold out hope that things aren't as bad as they are, but they are. Get ready to fight to do something about it.

78. Get any draftable kids in your family? You want to gamble that he told
the truth when he said 'no draft'? Because you know that was a damn lie. He's piling up the dead Iraqi civilians as we speak and they're talking about expanding the 'war on terra'. Excuse me, who do you thing he's gonna get to fight his war? Ken Lay's kids? PPPPLLLLEEEAAASSSEEE.

All of us who've been paying into Social Security for decades are now going to be ripped off. That's my money, your money, all our money, and he's gonna use it as he sees fit. He's gonna bankrupt the system and fuck everybody else. I PAID INTO THAT FUND FOR DECADES and I don't want some sticky fingered psychopath using it to cover his ass because rich people aren't going to have to pay their taxes. Rich people and the huge corporate machine out there. No, they've figured out a way to develop their own little welfare system and it sure as hell doesn't include the poor, the old, the jobless, the homeless... I'm sure you get my drift.

Like the guy in Skull and Bones said about bush*, he was born mean. Don't even begin to try to tell me this election humbles him in any way, I'm not that stupid. And being a Christian and a man of convictions and of his word, there's only one word that I can think of as a retort to that statement. BULLSHIT!!

180. No! No! No!
No number one was for when he elected governor of Texas...The general consensus was "He f*cking won?"...We have ozone level alerts nearly every day during the summer in the Houston area now...The shrub let his oil and chemical friends totally f*ck up our air.

No number two was the 2000 election. I just couldn't believe it. no need to go into what the last four years has been like, we all know.

The last no came as I watched the election coverage. Not again.

As to the draft issue - There may not be a draft in place yet, but there is a back door draft in place. Tours are being extended, and people are being retained past the time they committed for.

I have a brother currently deployed on a sub...I just hope he's somewhere safe.

83. I Judge A Man's Word By Walking the Walk, Not Talking the Talk
I'm not willing to give George Walker Bush the benefit of the doubt. His actions during the last five years speak far more loudly as to the worth of his say-so and his character than does anything coming from his mouth or pen.

I judge a man's (Or a woman's) word by their behavior, not by their say-so. I grew up in an family strongly affected by alcohol, and I learned very early not to trust other people's promises or say-so without sufficient corroboration or ample evidence of follow-through.

George Walker Bush has spent the last four years breaking his promise that he would be a uniter, not a divider. I do not believe him to be trustworthy or a man of his word.

I don't really know if giving Bush a chance is the right question, because.. what choice do we have? He's there, he's not going anywhere, he will do what he will do, and we can't keep him from it, short of assassination or impeachment. I am in no way for assassination, and for impeachment to happen something fucking huge needs to come up. I would welcome it gladly, although it seems improbable.

Bush is never going to win my heart or my support, but I will breathe a sigh of relief if he appoints a reasonable judge and cabinet.

I am trying really hard to be optimistic. I will allow for the possibility of Bush surprising me by doing something that I didn't expect, and possibly agree with. If I don't, then I'm just going to be a miserable asshole for the next four years and nobody needs that.

130. If the Dems let me down on USSC nominees, I'm through.
I'll tolerate a TON of disappointment. I'll tolerate bad tax law, and bad Social Security and Medicare programs.. but Supreme Court nominees last DECADES - and people are only living LONGER now.

I'll make it abundantly clear to the Democratic Party: if you fail to fight against more Scalias on the court, I QUIT.

I will not spend any money in any red states, nor buy from any companies in red states, or buy from any companies that supported chimp. I will not do business with anyone I know to be a republican.

Social Security bankrupt, no health care for veterans......

the benefit of the doubt. It was after 9/11. That was the one time when I supported him, hoping he would do the right thing.

Within two months though I felt betrayed, just as Al Gore once said.

Nope, the future is looking dim. I can only look forward to new Scalia clones on the supreme court. We can look forward to higher defecits. More money for defense contractors, whose equipment will be used to kill more innocent people around the world. A lame duck George Bush with a percieved "mandate" in the form of a popular vote majority is really the worst thing we could got.

After what he's said and what he's done over the last four years? Look at his record, that's proof enough. The only thing I'll support that has to do with him is getting a better balance of power in the '06 midterms (read: get Dems back into office), so that he can't unleash his agenda full-force against this country without a fight. There's no way in hell that I could ever support * or anyone like him and still have a clear conscience.

186. I remember about this same time four years ago
I thought "Well, how bad can he be? I sure as hell didn't vote for the guy and I think he's an idiot but, really, how much damage can he do in four years?"

I've since learned never to ask that question, even to myself.

I cannot think of one example where I thought he did the right thing in the last four years. Some people, Dems even, talk about how he was a good leader after 9/11 (at least until he started talking about bombing the wrong freaking country) and I laugh at that. At best, AT BEST, he did the bare minimum of what anyone would do in the same position. He made a few speeches (which his speechwriters wrote), he looked appropriately solemn (most of the time) and he got misty-eyed at memorials. Big deal, who wouldn't have done at least that? Most people I know were breaking down in tears at the slightest provocation. Most people I know were writing long, impassioned notes to their loved ones to express feelings they didn't share often enough. Because Dumbya resembled a humanoid on 9/12 while occupying the oval office he should get a medal or something? He didn't actually stop the terrorists, even though there was nearly an hour and a half between the first plane being reported as hijacked and the fourth plane hitting the Pentagon. He certainly didn't make us any safer in the subsequent three years. In fact, his actions have made us even more hated in the Muslim world and less likely to be assisted by our allies (except maybe Poland, I haven't forgotten them).

And while we were occupied with The War on Terror and other ridiculous excuses for war profiteering, BushCo was quietly wreaking havoc all over our country. He cut taxes for the rich and social programs for the poor. He protected his friends in big business and exposed our environment to the elements of greed and corruption. He racked up a crushing deficit, ruined our economy and made our educational system even more of a laughing-stock. He restricted our freedoms, crushed our civil rights, silenced anyone who might disagree with him, and turned the media into his propaganda machine. He didn't just ignore the separation between church and state, he actively made the state into his church's bitch. He used his "faith" as an excuse to condone bigotry, mysogeny, and racism and turn us against one another.

And through it all, he's lied like no one I've ever seen in action. Whether it's playing stupid (which he does very well), or avoiding questions, or just plain denial of statements he's made on national television as if no one could possibly produce video evidence in a matter of minutes, he lies so consistently and so willingly that I wonder if he even knows what the truth actually is anymore.

So the short answer is NO. I gave him a chance in 2000 (not that I had a choice) and he proved my original opinion so spectacularly correct that I cannot EVER give him another chance EVER.

Is there really any question at all whether or not GWB is a man of his word? Only if his word is "liar."
