senator byrd on truth
Ê

The following speech was delivered by Senator Robert C. Byrd (D-WV) on the Senate floor.

Êhttp://byrd.senate.gov/byrd_speeches/byrd_speeches.html

May 21, 2003

"Truth, crushed to earth, shall rise again, - -
The eternal years of God are hers;
But Error, wounded, writhes in pain,
And dies among his worshippers."

ÊTruth has a way of asserting itself despite all attempts to obscure it.Ê Distortion only serves to derail it for a time.Ê No matter to what lengths we humans may go to obfuscate facts or delude our fellows, truth has a way of squeezing out through the cracks, eventually.

1. I am marking his words, indeed
And mark my words, the calculated intimidation which we see so often of late by the "powers that be" will only keep the loyal opposition quiet for just so long. Because eventually, like it always does, the truth will emerge. And when it does, this house of cards, built of deceit, will fall.

4. I was just interested in the "truth" speech for now
Another thread on DU indicates Byrd may be leaning towards providing the requisite Senatorial signature for Conyers' contest of Ohio electors. For those who wish to email him and encourage him to take that action, it would be nice to quote from Senator Byrd's own speech to remind him that eloquent words are nice, but without action, they are just words and don't mean anything.

This was an excellent find, Starmaker. Thanks.

8. Yes - I love this honorable sage Senator.
And am sick to death of the pissant Democrats caving in over and over and over again while while whining about the opposition's tactics, expressing "disappointment", etc. about this, that and the other. In response to my representatives proud announcement of his vote for the "urgently" needed intelligence bill, I told him I stood solidly behind Senator Byrd on the matter. You better know I'm going to be watching who does and doesn't stand with Conyers on the Ohio election issue. I've had it with these cowardly dissimulating pigs.

5. gotta love that quote on the page linked by OP
As long as there is a forum in
which questions can be asked
by men and women who do not
stand in awe of a chief
executive and one can speak
as long as one's feet will allow
one to stand, the liberties of the
American people will be
secure.

9. How in the world could this man NOT stand up on 1/6/05
After writing a speech like this?

13. I do agree, JoMama.
He stood up for this country when it was being debated in Congress whether or not to give WhatsHisName the go-ahead to rid Iraq of its weapons of mass destruction.

I can't help believing that he will stand up for the people on January 6th. It certainly fits in with his scruples.

10. I just wrote to Byrd tonight.
I'm not nearly as eloquent as some of you are, but I tried -- I get brownie points for that, RIGHT? He probably won't read it since I'm from Delaware, but I did email it and it made me feel better. Here's the text of the letter....

*******
I know that I am not a constituent of your's, but I felt like I had to write and ask for your support. Rep. Conyers has been doing a superb and thorough job in his investigation of election fraud and voter disenfranchisement in Ohio. As you know, being a Democrat and in the minority in this Congress, he has been working with his hands tied behind his back.

I am writing you to ask that you stand in support of his work on this investigation, in support of the disenfranchised voters of all races in the 2004 election, and stand in support and protection of our Democracy and our Constitution.

If the Democrats and moderate Republicans don't stick together on this issue, this may be the last time anyone needs to worry about doing anything in Congress at all. I've been trying to impress upon Sens. Biden, Carper, and Rep. Castle that either the Congress stands for Democracy and the Consitution or they sit in blatant support of election fraud. There is no gray area here.

I know I don't need to tell you that our country is going to hell in a handbasket in an increasingly alarming rate. We need to use every measure in our power to stop this insanity and fix the system. Our country was in decent shape and thriving just four short years ago. We can't live thru another term unchecked as we have these last 4 years. There will be nothing left of our once great country, of our economy, or of our democracy as we once knew it.

Thank you. Thousands of people are counting on you -- not just West Virginians, but citizens from across the U.S. -- to do the right thing on January 6th.

12. Nothing is worth that kind of lie - not oil, not revenge, not reelection..
"But, I contend that, through it all, the people know. The American people unfortunately are used to political shading, spin, and the usual chicanery they hear from public officials. They patiently tolerate it up to a point. But there is a line. It may seem to be drawn in invisible ink for a time, but eventually it will appear in dark colors, tinged with anger. When it comes to shedding American blood - - when it comes to wreaking havoc on civilians, on innocent men, women, and children, callous dissembling is not acceptable. Nothing is worth that kind of lie - - not oil, not revenge, *********not reelection**********, not somebody's grand pipedream of a democratic domino theory.

And mark my words, the calculated intimidation which we see so often of late by the "powers that be" will only keep the loyal opposition quiet for just so long. Because eventually, like it always does, the truth will emerge. And when it does, this house of cards, built of deceit, will fall."

16. The question is, will he set the example for all mankind on Jan. 6, 2005?
It is not fair to prejudge him.

Let's wait and see how he deals with the issue on January 6th, 2005.

Either way, he is sure to be one to watch and listen to.

17. I have to agree.
After seeing him speak up in the days leading up to when-all-Hell-broke-loose, though, I'm anxious to see what Sen. Byrd does on the 6th.

Btw, I have to say that Rep. Conyers' public statement that "several senators" are expected to stand with him on the 6th carries a lot of weight with me.
