I think we need to orgaize a DU Gathering for DC on the 6th
I am getting in the afternoon of the 5th, and will be there Wednesday and Thursday nights. I know there are DUers coming to town or already there, and I also have a lot of Progressive Dems of America friends coming in. I think a Thursday night get-together somewhere should be on the menu, or Wednesday night if that makes more sense. I don't know DC bars very well, so if anyone has an idea, I am all ears.

They have drinks and great burgers. If it turns out to be another 80 degree sunny day like Saturday was, we can dine al fresco on the sidewalk.

3. Wednesday night is the Tent Revival in Cherry Hill Park,
so Thursday night would probably be better. I confess I am worthless when it comes to knowing about nightlife here, but I would love to see people. How many do you think we are talking about? 10, 20, 200?

In fact pretty much EVERYTHING in and near D.C. is reachable by Metro or MARC train... PM me if you need help (don't live there anymore, but went to grad school there for 2 summers!)

15. If on a budget, do NOT take D.C. taxis if you can help it, especially...
over the MD or VA line.

They operate on a "zone" system, not meter, (at least they used to). Sometimes just going like one block over a zone line will make your fare almost double!

I used to lie to the drivers about my destination (even late at night) and get out on the D.C. side of the line, then walk the last couple of blocks to where I was staying in Bethesda MD. Saved me BIG bucks, but the drivers REALLY don't like it when you do that!

East Jebip is just a silly pseudo-town when you are talking about somewhere far away. I realized I shouldn't be saying exactly where the 'Tent Revival' was going to be b/c it is supposed to be invite only (there was a thread on here a few days ago from the org. that is holding it - we were supposed to email them if we wanted to be invited, something like that)....

11. Which brings me to the question...
Does anybody have specific info about the Savage MD to D.C. marchers in regards to that?

Info on their website is rather vague, especially about Wednesday night. March takes them to College Park on Tuesday night, then to Capitol grounds on Wednesday, then --?? I can't image "camping" on the Capitol grounds or on The Mall in this day and age; we'd be hauled off to Cuba for sure!

10. How about something in the College Park area AFTER the revival?
Not sure that the revival will be an all-night thing... College Park is a college area so there HAVE to be good bars around. Any U of MD grads on here?

Just have to be careful (no matter where this is held, or which day) because the D.C. Area Metro closes @ midnight on weekdays; this is not the NYC Subway!

I will have a vehicle, but am not sure how many gazillion of you I can haul, lol. (Overstuffing a car after the Metro is closed will take me back to my college days for sure, ha ha!)

About 2 miles south of campus. Microbrewery with yummy food and a funky general store. http://www.pubcrawler.com/Template/ReviewWC.cfm/flat/BrewerID=103210

Despite being a college town (sorta), College Park has some sucky bars.

Bookstores Have Defenders, Skeptics in Bind Over Subpoenas

By David Streitfeld and Ann Gerhart
Washington Post Staff Writers
Friday, April 3, 1998; Page F01

Amid vigorous debate about whether independent counsel Kenneth Starr's subpoena of two Washington bookstores violates constitutional guarantees of privacy and freedom of speech, the nation's booksellers, publishers and librarians vowed defiance yesterday.

snip......

Starr has demanded all information about Monica Lewinsky's purchases at Kramerbooks, but lawyers for the Dupont Circle store have filed a motion to quash the subpoena. Bruce J. Ennis Jr., one of the country's foremost First Amendment lawyers, has filed a friend-of-the-court brief supporting the bookstore's position. Chief U.S. District Judge Norma Holloway Johnson will hold a hearing this morning.

And stayed in the DC area until three weeks ago. We went to Kramerbooks all the time when I visited her, and it's a great place, but a bit crowded to accommodate a large group well. There are a lot of other bars and restaurants in the DuPont area, though.

19. DUers Lobby Senators on the 5th before meeting at the bar?
Our contingent from Mainstreet Moms Oppose Bush (SF Bay area) flew out this morning with a documentary film crew and furious moms & dads. They're going to Ohio for the action on the 3rd, then car caravan to DC. They'll lobby senators on the 5th, demonstrate on the 6th.

I'm envisioning a DU lobby swarming...well informed...articulate...passionate...creative...relentless...
Could create quite the buzz and perhaps be the tipping point to change a few minds!

Folks could deliver copies of the excellent compendium Indyop posted under the title Smoking GUNS - Please FAX Election Fraud Briefing to Senators (Kick!):

"The Case for Fraud in Ohio Election 2004" < http://www.bpac.info >.
The pages could be clipped together with oversized orange paper clips.

Suggest to take some one-page flyers with links to articles/websites on it, copied on bold orange paper if u can. Please let us know how it goes for you and your group--so glad you are filming. Go Mainstreet Moms and Dads!

To every one of you out there who goes to DC Jan 6--know that there are so many around the country who are with you in spirit, who will be inspired by your being there. You are representing us all and we've got your back.

I thought about the orange paper - but it makes really bad copies if someone wants to duplicate and pass the info on. I suggested passing out info kits (like the one IndyOp recommended in this forum) to senators - with oversized orange paperclips - easy to find in a stack.

Edited on Sun Jan-02-05 10:57 PM by TwoSparkles
I'm glad to hear that MMOB is so active and taking such an aggressive position, with respect to the fraud issue.

I was so happy when I got their email, which discussed their activism on the fraud issue.

I'm a mother of two girls, and I share their outrage. So glad to hear they're going to Ohio too. There's nothing like a mom's rage! Don't mess with a mama bear...it could get ugly!

Great to hear they'll be in DC also. :D

I get so many comments on my bumper sticker, "Mainstreet Moms Oppose Bush". I love it. Those Republican thugs certainly haven't cornered the market on family values and I love that my bumper sticker screams that out loud and clear!

the White House lawn and also on the Washington Monument.

It was voted the Washington Post's "Best Hotel Bar" and is located at 15th and Pennsylvania N.W.

"Hotel Washington is across the street from the White House, only 10 minutes from National Airport, and convenient to the Metrorail system."

24. What's the name of that Irish Pub near Mass Ave & N Capitol
Maybe on F St.? map You can see the tracks coming into Union Station in the upper right corner. The bar I'm talking about is on F where it hits Mass Ave. Hmmm, wouldn't a party on Mass ave be appropos?

The name is something like The Dubliner.

I think Tip O'neal was rumoured to drink there occaisionally. Excellent burgers too, Guinness and Murphy's on tap.

This is a capital idea Will, let me know where it ends up.

It might not be big enough. I need to know where to meet up so I can make transport arrangements. The last Marc for my neck of the woods leaves at like 7 PM, so I'd have to leave a vehicle at some other place.

Can anyone flying in and staying at a hotel downtown provide a parking place? (Sometimes, a parking spot is included with the room if you delcare it at check-in)

26. INFO MARCH, HOUSING, RIDES, ETC
If you dig into the 51capitalmarch site, there's a lot of information about housing, how to get to DC, ride shares, room sharing (not bed sharing, though), etc:

http://www.51capitalmarch.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=balto_wash_housing

Other places on the site, it says some people will camp, but people are free to make their own arrangements. People are also welcome to march for an hour or more, some or all of the route. What I have to find out is how you can get to the march, march a while and then get back to where you need to be. It may be worth digging some more.

I also have a van, holds about 7 people, but parking is usually impossible, so metro is the best bet. I

Andy is staying here the 6th & 7th, and I plan to lobby with him part of the 5th. I could accomodate another person, or a compatible pair (double bed) if someone else needs a place. PM me if you want. But don't be afraaaaaid of dogs like Faye!

From what people are saying here, planning something for both the evening of the 5th and the 6th makes sense. Whatever place is chosen though, be sure it doesn't have a function already planned. The Hotel Washington would be very handy for right after the rally. The bookstore (if it's open late) could be good for Wednesday evening instead of/before/after the revival.

I will make an offer: I have an answering machine & am willing to record a message on it so people can call in on the 5th & 6th to get info on where/when to go, if that would be useful. I can also check about the bookstore tomorrow am & its hours & if Hotel Washington has anything planned on 1/6. Anything else?

Now, how are we going to recognize ourselves, except by the deranged expressions and bloodshot eyes?

52. Thanks, already checked this though... not a whole lot of info...
about the tenting, after Tuesday night. Looks like maybe the marchers will have to go into the Capitol on Wednesday, and then back to College Park via transit that night, then back to town via transit Thursday AM?

It does seem the March will follow Rt. 1 which also follows the MARC Camden Line, so theoretically you could get back and forth that way. (And use Metro to/from College Park when march gets in closer to the city than there.)

64. Pardon me for butting in, but
in my opinion, freepers would much rather sit behind their little keyboards most of the time, and not take on a crowd of people.

Examples of freepers who learned the hard way: Check this one out.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1285779/posts

It says that a particular freeper is being sued and he posted on there essentially asking them to chip in and help him b/c he had some serious legal expenses. According to his own online tale, he was sued for assault b/c he put his hand(s) on a man who he encountered at a "freep" event. IMO, it looks like the man who sued him has a case.

Then there was another one, a lawyer. He was a freeper. The way I read it, he actually did legal work for freerepublic, and/or for some other conservative cause(s). He has now been disbarred by the California bar. That one was on the web, too. The lawyer's posting name was "clarity" and, to add insult to injury, freerepublic later banned him from posting.

And of course I'm sure you've heard of the incident years ago in which freerepublic had a bit of trouble about copyrights, and it ended up in court.

I guess my (longwinded) point is, freepers are kind of pathetic--not, IMO, all that formidable. (Notwithstanding that trashy, obscene e-mail you received from that anonymous coward.)

As far as I know, none of these bars puts pot in their brownies, so we'll all just have to forget about making the trip to Washington.

Actually, I wasn't planning on going, BUT if I have a chance to meet some of these freepers...well, NOTHING can hold me back!

76. can a local give me advice on getting to the protest with kids?
I am hoping to drive down from NJ with another mom and our total of 5 kids (2@7yrs old, 2@5 and the baby at 2 years old).

Can someone local advise me what they best way to get to the protest areas (is it up by the Capitol?) with a gaggle of kids in tow? Can you drive right nearby and park? Should we park somewhere else and hop on the metro? The logistics may be tough but we'd like to find a way to work it out. Any advice is welcome.

94. You might want to consider ...
Taking Amtrak either all the way or from BWI Airport.

Union Station is 3 blocks from the Demo site.

Amtrak/MARC at BWI has pretty good parking and the R/T fare to DC is like $10, although with the kids you might be better to find a garage downtown.

98. Parking is about $25 per day
If you can handle that, it's fairly available if you cruise around a little. There are a fair number of underground lots within 2 blocks of PA Ave. If the weather is nice, DC is a nice town to walk in, but watch the "Walk/Don't Walk" sign timing: right-on-red turning cars can still barrel through. I believe NJ doesn't have right-on-red, so be especially cautious (and please do a right-on-red when safely available or you'll annoy DC drivers behind you). The traffic signals are on low posts at the sides of the streets, NOT on overhead wires. And there are automatic cameras for red light runners and speeders.

Metro is very good, you could choose a stop in the suburbs and ride in, but this may be more bother than it's worth because DC is not that bad (say, compared to NYC) for driving. Avoid rush hour though, because then it is pretty miserable.

The prettiest route into town is to take the Beltway (495) into VA, and get off at George Washington Parkway. Take that about 10 miles until you are just past the Pentagon, then get on the 14th Street Bridge. The Parkway starts out overlooking the Potomac as is passes through a gorge, then across the river you see Georgetown, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Washington Monument, etc. At the end you will see the Pentagon on your right. Go under the 395/14th St/Rt 1 overpass, loop up and on to the bridge. Stay in the left lane (signs say Rt 1, but it's 14th St). Pass the Bureau of Engraving & Printing (money factory), Holocaust Museum, Washington Monument, National Mall, National Museum of American History, and the Reagan Building. You'll find yourself at 14th & Pennsylvania Ave, NW. Make a right and cruise toward the Capitol. Watch the 1-way signs, and cruise the side streets a bit for parking. On-street parking is heavily enforced so if you use a meter seek out all the nearby signs with restrictions on timing, etc.

From the North, the route I just gave may not look efficient on your map, but believe me it is. The Parkway will zip you along; coming down through the city will kill you.

86. Great idea.
I don't think I will be able to make it to the march unless it is warm that day because my dear daughter has been sick (and now I'm sick). But I would love to hang for an hour or so and meet some DUers if I'm feeling okay and not contagious.

We went to a bar to eat soul food in Adams Morgan recently and it was very good. Called "Madam's Organ" (by the way I JUST got that play on words, duh!); and the decor was stuffed dead animals and tasteful nude pictures. The fried chicken and enchiladas were good and cheap; but it's small so we couldn't meet there.

Anyway, if the plans are secret can someone give me a courtesy PM? I missed meeting you all last time.
