Why wait for the MSM to publicize Voter Suppression. DO THIS!
Edited on Sun Jan-02-05 08:43 PM by BigBearJohn
Why wait for the media to publicize our cause? We can do it
ourselves. We can all donate to have commercials made and aired
on t.v. exposing the crap that is being perpetrated in Ohio??????

I can just picture it: (feel free to create your own and post)

FADE IN:

Long lines of voters, old and young alike, waiting in line
IN A TORRENTIAL DOWN POUR OF RAIN.
CUT TO:

EXT. REPUBLICAN PRECINCT -- A well-dressed woman parks in front,
leaves the car running, casually walks in, door is opened by poll
worker for her, she casts her vote immediately, no wait whatsoever.
jumps back in her car.
CUT TO:

INT. HUGE WAREHOUSE -- stacks and stacks of unpacked voting machines.
A voice on the phone says, "Sorry, we don't have any additional
voting machines to send you"
CUT TO:

EXT. LONG LINES IN POOREST PART OF TOWN -- people lined up around
a building in the dark of night, being harrassed by police.

CLOSE UP of old woman wobbling on her cane as she painfully waits to cast her vote.

INT. POLLING PLACE

CLOSE-UP on VOTING MACHINE SCREEN as an old lady chooses KERRY, but the screen shows vote registering for BUSH. She clicks Kerry again. Vote still moves to BUSH.

MODERATOR:
"Over 50,000 complaints have been received of voter suppression"
"Concerned voters have had to pay for this commercial to save Democracy"

I've read things authored by you on this forum.
You are an amazing person. With your help we
could get this done. I see no reason to wait
for the National Media to catch up, when united
we can affect change ourselves.

4. I used to work in Hollywood, so yes I know how commercials are made
I worked in production offices for television. I didn't make commercials though.
However, I do know MoveOn.org made infomercials
during the election. I don't know anyone over there, but it would
seem to me that if people were interested in contributing, the
commercials could be made really quick. I certainly know there are
enough of us that would be thrilled to contribute to this cause.
I contributed to MoveOn.org during the election. It would be my
honor to contribute to this as well. Certainly there must be people
on this forum who know people at MoveOn would could get the job done
quickly and efficiently.

My only thought is that people keep complaining how national media
is not covering this story -- well -- it is in our own power to
get the news out. We don't have to get down on our knees, praying
for any little news leak that sheds light on our cause. We just
need to join hands and focus.

10. I love this idea, but do you think MSM
would run this commercial? I would imagine they do refuse some commercials, even if offered astronomical amounts of cash. I don't think even radio would run a commercial like this right now, do you? If you think it can be done I think it's a great idea though!

12. You bring up a good point -- BUT -- nothing ventured...nothing gained
I refuse to believe that EVERY media outlet would turn us down.
THAT in itself would be major news. If I can be forced to watch
commercials asking me to accept religion, they can listen to a
commercial about saving our democracy.

15. good ideas.... though I'd err on less 'dramatization' (unknowns), and
more actual statements, and footage from the day. something culled from this or other types of video http://460design.net/ohio/

I think the long line /short line footage could be found with the people who were doing video that day.

Something culled from the Triad vendor video.

Actual statement/comments from people who had problems
people have done interviews on NPR (Pam Fessler went to Youngstown to talk with someone who complained when his kerry vote went to bush on an e-vote machine Friday of Election Week played on Morning Edition

Headlines from The Columbus FreePress (or other print sources) about Machines being withheld, Highlighting Comments from the Head of Elections... and then juxaposing these with the long lines photos

Actual stills or video of people and/or ballots being taken away by only one person (there were a couple that were posted in the last few weeks) -- whatever.

Statements from People at the Conyers hearing (or things in Florida if you aren't just concentrating on Ohio), etc.

I know where you are coming from -- but unless it's actual statement or event people are just going to think it was made up, which is why showing a warehouse with someone saying "Sure we'll send one right out" doesn't really sit well with me.

As I said, it's a good idea, this is just my take on it -- Other Opinions May Vary

17. Your suggestions are great. I think you are on the right track
Any more suggestions? I think it could be a very powerful
message if done right. Furthermore, it IS something we ALL
can pull off... instead of just begging for a few scraps
from the various news outlets.

***PLUS**** the fact that it came from concerned citizens
fighting for their right to vote would make it all the more
effective and inspiring!

Why not get something going that we can all get behind
in addition to typing back and forth. This could add some
real excitement to the movement.

right after the election.
http://www.byte-productions.com/deb/smiley.txt

(Actually, Tavis had him on right before the election and asked him about the provisional ballot changes and about the Paper Weight Rule for absentee ballots (said something like about 10 years ago may absentee ballots got destroyed in the postoffice.... yada yada -- that was the week before the election I don't have a link for that).

20. don't know if you could just pull out a few things from this data (it's
posted on the Ohio Secretary of State Website... as I wrote to media and other sources, the jist is

It wasn’t just this year that precincts were merged or deleted -- it's just this year that the excuse of getting ready for e-vote machines was made for this occurrence. Since Mr. Blackwell has been Secretary of State in 1998, there have been over 1,769 precincts lost, while we have gained 878,427 new voters.

From 1980 to 1996 Presidential Elections there has been an average of 72.86% voter turnout (with 1996 being under 70%). From 2000, to 2004 there has been an average of 67.75% voter turnout, with 2000 being closer to 60% than the average 70% for elections in the last 20 years. People stood in lines for HOURS in this 2004 election and yet we only had 71% reporting? Does that make any sense?

See this thread with Numbers...
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=203&topic_id=209744&mesg_id=209744&page=

(caution: probably should be analyzed by a real math/research person -- I was just investigating the numbers -- they just look suspicious to me at this point.)

...( I have off year election numbers for 97, 98, 99 and 2001, 2002, and 2003 for what its worth)

Again -- ignore if you are looking at overall national problems, I just know about Ohio...

30. To get on-air quickly, edit existing content? Example:
This example requires QuickTime:

http://retrovsmetro.org/videos/play_video.php?id=6

A good editor could probably edit the best scenes into 30 seconds quickly. . .

This is a great idea and like I said in the other thread, we'll chip in. Who wouldn't?

Especially the parts with the guy talking about his 90-year-old father
not being able to vote, juxtaposed against POURING DOWN rain, slamming into the face of all the people wrapped around the block standing. Man, can I see this. POWERFUL. SLAM cuts with a John Williams soundtrack.
Why couldn't this be done. Can you think of ONE person who would not
donate SOMETHING to this cause? The good thing about this plan is it
allows all of us to DO something about it... something STRONG and
Powerful!!!!!!

45. the money will come
I was motivated to give the most money I have EVER donated when MoveOn started asking for money to run ads.

This is the best use of our energy and money because it can get the truth in front of Americans who do not know that the MSM is not giving them the whole story. I would gladly donate anything I can because I feel that my $ will effect more people this way than anything else I can do. I would imagine others feel the same.

Bush also faces a formidable challenge from AARP. The group, whose 35 million members are age 50 and older, has launched a major advertising campaign to oppose Bush's plan to divert money from the retirement system into personal accounts. The group contends the accounts amount to gambling with retirement savings.
