OMEN? John Conyers and Shirley Chisholm were co-sponsors of the bill...
...to establish MLK Day. Do we have the spirits of Rep. Chisholm and Dr. King watching over Rep. Conyers and us this week?

5. Chisholm also backed a white Southerner over Conyers
for the position of House Majority Leader. She was a savvy politician when it came to looking out for her constituents:

Newly elected, she was assigned to the House Agriculture Committee, which she felt was irrelevant to her urban constituency. In an unheard of move, she demanded reassignment and got switched to the Veterans Affairs Committee.

Not long afterward she voted for Hale Boggs, who was white, over John Conyers, who was black, for majority leader. Boggs rewarded her with a place on the prized Education and Labor Committee and she was its third ranking member when she left.

That's why they sent her to DC. They didn't send her there to create agricultural policy.

7. Great thought ClassWarrior!
This came to mind for me too, when I heard that she had crossed over to the other side.

I think that we are on the verge of an enormous spiritual awakening here and around the world. The forces of good and evil have never seemed more stark to me than at this point in the history of our country, and around the world.

I am praying for her to oversee this process now, give Conyers strength, and guide us peacefully toward what is right.

13. I agree about the "enormous spiritual awakening."
First, because that's what I truly believe is happening.
Second, because it's the only way out of our troubles. Logically, we are totally screwed. It's going to take a mass awakening to a higher calling and set of values to move enough people to make a difference.

Excellent thought!

41. I believe it is...
There are actually groups that claim the Tsunami was "God's will" to punish the heathens. If that is not pure evil, I do not know what is. There is nothing like looking evil in the face to awaken the good in ordinary people.

Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 06:40 PM by seito
"You don't make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas."

"There is little place in the political scheme of things for an independent, creative personality, for a fighter. Anyone who takes that role must pay a price."

"Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth."

May we all live a life worthy of such a legacy. :toast:

48. Quote Worthy Of MLK Day
This year, MLK day is January 17. In all the hoopla of the stolen election, let's not forget this important day. Signing it into law was one of Reagan's few good moves in his first term.

Cowardice asks the question: Is it safe?
Expediency asks the question: Is it politic?
Vanity asks the question: Is it popular?
But conscience asks the question: Is it right?
And there comes a time one must take a position that is neither
safe, nor politic nor popular... but one must take it simply because it is right.

-- Martin Luther King

50. I was in Columbus today and heard Jackson & Tubbs-Jones speak
and they both invoked Dr. King and Rep. Chisholm during their speeches. Jackson repeated over and over that Tubbs-Jones is now carrying the spirit of Shirley Chisholm. As far as I could tell, he was right: Tubbs-Jones is on FIRE. She's ready to take on Genghis Khan should he appear in chambers on Jan 6th.

Jackson also talked about Dr. King asking Pres. Lyndon Johnson to pass legislation to give African Americans the right to vote. Johnson said that Congress just wouldn't go along with it -- all looked bleak -- but they marched and revealed the injustice -- and Congress passed the legislation. Jackson involved Mandela, too.

All in all -- a powerful afternoon.
