1. Awesome, it's the youngest's naptime. I can watch uninterrupted.
Here's to nappers who sleep for two plus hours every day! Thanks for posting the schedule. I was sitting here wondering what time it would be on.

5. Note the note:
"The beginning and end of this live program may be earlier or later than the scheduled times." and tune in a little early (but that almost never happens).

I'm hoping it lasts LOTS longer than scheduled because they'll have so many objections!

6. What happens to C-span coverage if senator(s) challenge and senate
Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 11:26 AM by Amaryllis
and house split up? One on C-span one and one on C-span two?

22. I just called and asked about this and the guy said he didn't know and
that the programmers are really up on what's going on and he's sure they are aware of the possibility that the senate and house may split up. He said you can't talk to the programmers. Anyone know where they start out for this event? Maybe either the house or senate stays in that room and C-span will just stay there and cover.

34. Joint sessions are always in the House Chambers.
Upon duly contested electors, the Senate retires to the Senate Chambers and the fireworks begin in both places.

39. so I guess that means C-span will televise the house proceedings and not
the senate if they split up in the event a senator challenges? One on C-span one and one on C-span two and we get two tvs and make ourselves crazy trying to watch both?
Or maybe they broadcast the senate later?

33. I'm 99% sure...
...that the house would be on C-span and the Senate would be on C-span 2. The House and Senate always take precedence over anything else they would be airing.

7. Hmmm...
This should prove to be most interesting. This is going to be either the super-bowl event of the year in politics or the biggest let-down since Bush stole re-election. Either way, buckle your seat belts kids, because it's -- hopefully -- going to get bumpy!

I'll be at work, so I've already asked my husband to tape it for me. (He'll be at home, as he's a victim of the wonderful economy Bush has provided for us and hasn't worked in a year and a half.)

Mine has been at home for 11 months now and things are getting pretty scary that his high-priced degree in IT will be useless soon. Now he's back at community college brushing up on more network security classes -- assuming that the Bush regime will make THAT the most important IT futures job.

SIGH!.....................

14. hmmmm...coincidence, I don't think so
Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 11:50 AM by SharonRB
Mine was also an IT guy. Did a lot of independent consulting through consulting firms. He thought maybe if he'd get certified, it would be easier to find something, so he ordered one of those on-line certification courses -- special price of $2,000 -- but hasn't gotten very far. It's got 42 CDs and it bores him. I keep harping that we spent all this money, he really needs to devote a few hours a day to it and get it done. It's so frustrating.

It also doesn't help that he's 57. Firms want to hire the young guys who they can pay less money.

Edited for last paragraph.

15. Yeah, I'm almost right there with you, too.
My IT hubbie is now making <30% of what he made 4 years ago. Still we feel that he is lucky to have the job he's got. So many he used to work with are scattered about and been thru 3-4 jobs over same # of years.

It really burned me up when Bush (in 2nd depate)said that he would "send those workers back for more training" when asked what he would do with all the workers who lost their jobs to outsourcing. What a slap in the face to all of those with PhDs and other high level degrees!!:puke:

17. I remember that Bush speech -
I wondered how HE'D like going back to community college to learn a new career that would pay 30 to 50 percent less.

He's SO out of touch with reality it makes me want to cry.

I also hated the part about becoming an ownership society. What? So we all go into business for ourselves and struggle to make it while small businesses everywhere are going under because of corporate monopolies?

Ooooo.... I just HATE THAT MAN!

16. Age is a huge factor! Believe me, we know too.
Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 12:14 PM by cyberpj
"Firms want to hire the young guys who they can pay less money."

My househusband is 55. Worked 20+ years in PCs and networks for a company that was bought and sold twice, the last time to a French conglomerate that made it's first move by laying off all US employees!

At that point he got his MCSE (Microsoft certification) and some Cisco (network routing) training. (Perhaps the 42 CD pack you mentioned.) That got him into a forensic medical services lab site for networking and after 2 years, they outsourced all their IT stuff.

We're making it on a home-based PC business basis and getting good referrals from clients but it's come and go and not covering the benefits and savings we'd like to have. Also, he's not the go-getter type to advertise himself and get "out there". While he's a genius nerd type, he's no salesman.

People say things are getting better out there but we just don't see it. I believe it's the same as it ever was, it's not what you know but who you know and if you're not a business 'networker' you're in big trouble now with so many people vying for the same positions.

While some people prefer experience over a fresh piece of degree paper, they will still hire someone they know or someone someone else knows before an unknown applicant.

Right now, we're looking at smaller houses that we might pay in full so we can make it from here on with less than we expected. I've also gone back to work part-time doing medical billing to help out.

Where is our American dream?

Oh yeah, STOLEN. Just like everything else.

25. I guess I'm lucky...
...at least I have a pretty well-paying job and benefits, so we've been able to make do. I keep telling him to put an ad in one of the small local papers to help people out with their home computers, but he's isn't a go-getter, salesperson type either and just hasn't done it. I think he'd be good at it, too. He's very good at troubleshooting and figuring out what's wrong with computers. There are so many people using computers at home who don't have a clue what they're doing. I think the 42-CD pack was for an MCSE or something similar.

This may help.

They only have info for Thursday, as of today. But if you go to this link you can sign up for daily email notification of the planned schedule. (I say planned, because they can change at the last minute sometimes.)
