2. I'm Starting to do Likewise, with the following |
|
The legitimacy of democratic elections is predicated upon the electorate's ability to verify the results. This is only possible with a ballot which leaves a permanent record. Indeed, The history of democratic voting in America is a history of ballot recounts and the ability to conduct them. To deny any candidate the option of a recount is I believe directly contrary to the democratic principles upon which this nation was founded.
Electronic (bbv) voting or any ballot that cannot be physically verified or interrogated is no different than a vote by someone with no verifiable name or residence. It's like making a bank deposit with no receipt and for which the institution retains no hard copy of the transaction. If it's not good enough for our financial transactions, it's not good enough for our elections.
Yet, this was the voting method used in about 1/4th of US precincts including 7 counties in Ohio. At best, such systems are an open invitation to voting fraud by whichever political party controls the state voting machinery.
The presumed results of this election are suspicious given the following facts: No incumbent President whose approval rating was less than 50% just prior to voting has been reelected except GW Bush; hundreds of polls by dozens of organizations found the candidates in a dead heat with no evidence of a break for either, yet now Bush has a large popular vote "bump." Despite criticism, exit polls are the most accurate polls and they clearly showed Kerry leading comfortably in 9 states. As of this writing, the voting tallies very closely match the exit polls except in four states (OH, FL, NH, NC). All four use electronic machines or multiple methods, and not one but four different exit polls were done in OH and FL.
Clearly, the grassroots turnout especially of the religious vote helped George Bush. But I suspect that the electronic voting machine's unexplained 5% vote boost for Bush in OH and Florida was pivotal. Instead of propagating myth of a Bush "mandate," perhaps the media should focus on why America needs to rid itself of our balkanized mess of voting systems and forever eliminate any system that does not leave a permanent voting record thereby depriving the public of a full accounting and verification of the results.
