Now that their vacation time is over, looks like the stations have sent everyone over there...

Networks Send Top Names to Tsunami Zones

A week after the devastating tsunamis crashed ashore in Asia, American television networks have begun sending some of their top news anchors to the affected countries.

The networks covered the story extensively last week; the three evening newscasts devoted more minutes to it than any other natural disaster over the past 15 years, except the Mississippi River floods in 1993 and Hurricane Floyd in 1999, said Andrew Tyndall, president of ADT Research, which monitors news coverage. But they were slower to react in deploying their top talent, perhaps due to the holiday week and the gradual unfolding of the disaster's magnitude, Tyndall said.

Noting the difficulty in traveling to tsunami-ravaged areas, CBS News spokeswoman Sandy Genelius said holiday vacation schedules had nothing to do with network deployment decisions.

CNN had 50 reporters, producers and crew members at the scene within 48 hours of the disaster, spokeswoman Christa Robinson said. Now that the breaking news is giving way to stories about the rebuilding effort, that's better suited to the in-depth look the network's anchors can give on their shows, she said.

1. It won't matter -- they wouldn't cover anything a Dem senator might do
anyhow. They'll come back from S. Asia only if some celebrity gets arrested.

4. wrong 130,000
The 130,000 dead in Iraq don't get much coverage. Nevermind that many were innocent bystanders and 'freedom fighters'

The Indian Ocean 130,000 get coverage.

Because it was an act of god?
Because you won't get shot at?
Because you don't have to be embedded?
Because its a nice time of year to be in the tropics?
Because they are so happy to see us? no matter who shows up?

Both sad storys and I'm glad they are covering the tsunami
aftermath. Just pissed about the lousy Iraq coverage.

3. The media vultures wait until the drama unfolds to their satisfaction.
Since the anchorweights are traveling, that means some ambitious younger blow dried version gets the story. Will be LOL along with you!

5. Glad you mentioned that, and by the way...
if there really, really is a chance that a senator will join house members in standing up, look for a super-size TERROR ALERT! Or some equally stultifying "terror"-related story! In fact, I'd bet that we could probably gauge the chances that there really is something in the works, by looking to see just how much "terror" (or new war stuff) is in the news on Jan. 6.
