Anyone else just see Harry Reid on C-Span 2?
He just assured McConnell that any Senate debate on the objection would be brief, "25 minutes or so" with five Dem Senators speaking. I got the impression he thought the whole thing was a pain in the ass to be gotten through as quickly as possible. New Dem leader, same as the old Dem leader.

1. The Constitution allows for a full 2 hours of debate.
Why would the Democrats settle for or accept anything less?

5 minute rule
Apparently there is also a 5 minute limit per speaker. I am not sure if this is in the Constitution, or a Bill Frist rule. But wait a minute. Reid has just informed us that FIVE senators will be objecting! The ball is rolling!

3. I don't think he meant that five Senators will be
objecting. He meant that five asked to speak during the subsequent debate after the objection. He indicated the Dem portion of the "debate" in the Senate would take 25 minutes.

12. 5 minute limit?!!
Is that to ensure they don't say anything of substance?

13. How long does it take to say
"This election was stolen through intimidation, rigged voting machines, hidden polling data, and under-equipped polling places." ?

17. That doesn't take long
But that's not convincing. I want them to talk about the details.

It only takes a few seconds to say Peterson killed his wife, but the trial wasn't limited to 5 minutes. Which is more important?

2. Sen. Reid needs to understand that if they don't stand up for us, we don't
stand up with them.

14. Exactly
Dems who are cowering and afraid to stand up because they might threaten their re-elections need to understand that they have it exactly backwards.

9. I will judge the DNC by the respect that is shown objectors
This part might not be popular with some here, but what is happening today is a crucially important symbolic exercise at this stage. The Senate will accept Ohio's electors before the day is through, we simply do not have the votes to prevent that today.

Therefor I am less concerned about the length of the protest phase than I am in whether our Party closes ranks around those members who agreed to step forward and challenge. I am not looking for agreement even as much as I am looking for respect. Senator Boxer and any others who join her and Conyers and his colleagues, they are all exercising important rights and obligations under our Constitution. Democrats may differ on their judgment, I wish that weren't so but obviously it is, however no one should allow any cheap shots about their motivation to be thrown at their honor without a resulting spirited defense. That is the bottom line, my absolute minimum expectation of those who claim to represent me in the Democratic Party. Don't throw Boxer to the wolves and expect any support from me in your life time.

16. Hope I'm wrong but many of these Dem Senators don't seem as informed as we
I know they have a lot to cram into their little brains every day but this is the essence of everything. Are they only going to get that when its too late?

They are alienating their most reliable base - African Americans and core-belief liberals.

19. One possible bad scenario:
Senator Mark Dayton, a Minnesota democrat, already spoke this morning. He had no kind works to say about the objection and those objecting.

So, some democrats WILL BE aginst this objection. Therefore, it COULD happen like this:

The senators supporting the objection will have their 5 minutes each to speak. Republicans won't have to speak - there are enough democrats against the objection to fill up the remaining 2 hours.

So, it COULD be democrats against democrats.
