paper vs. computer totals. A paper trail means NOTHING if a count of a random sample of precincts is only done in a close election.
(I hope this makes sense--I am not a statistician.)

Be careful what you ask for - you might just get a paper trail.
A paper trail means didly-squat. When there's a difference between the machine used to vote and the trail, someone will want to argue about which one is right.
A voter-verified paper ballot, on the other hand, is tangible, and is already well-established in law as being countable.
I'd rather have my paper-ballot count, than have my paper trail count.
And count'em by hand - it really doesn't take that long. Canadian federal elections are paper ballots - hand counted, and we have the results in a couple of hours.
