Senate debate..Let's thank these senators (a list, contact link & comment)
Edited on Thu Jan-06-05 03:13 PM by wildflower
I watched the debate in the Senate chamber (I didn't see the House debate), and these are the senators I counted as standing in support of the objection (11 in all):

Sen. Barbara Boxer D-CA (signed and voiced the original objection)
Sen. Richard Durbin D-IL
Sen. Debbie Stabenow D-MI
Sen. Edward Kennedy D-MA
Sen. Ron Wyden D-OR
Sen. Frank Lautenberg D-NJ
Sen. Hillary Clinton D-NY
Sen. Harry Reid D-NV; Senate Minority Leader
Sen. Tom Harkin D-IA
Sen. Barack Obama D-IL
Sen. Christopher Dodd D-CT

Most of them said they do not question the outcome of the election, but all offered evidence (general and specific) that there are problems in the voting system.

A couple of Republicans got up and quoted from newspapers in support of the outcome of the election. Then Trent Lott got up and essentially told everyone to be quiet so they could vote.

I think we should send the above Senators (esp. Boxer!) thank you letters, faxes, or e-mails (or call). For their contact info, see:

http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

What did you think of the speeches? I thought Hillary Clinton's was one of the best.

ON EDIT: I heard Boxer and Levin vote yes to object to certifying Ohio; the rest voted no.

ON EDIT AGAIN: I think Levin changed his vote to no. There was only one 'aye' recorded.

11. They did not desire to overturn the will of the people.
They said in their statements of support they don't question the "outcome of the election."

8. But their speeches will get the movement started to fix things,
I hope. Some were quite passionate and cited specific evidence.

6. When we asked Dayton to stand up, we didn't know he
would talk about "lack of precedent." I still don't know what he thought his point was in getting up there.

7. It's important that we stay on them, so that it's not just a bunch of
BS, but that reform will be worked on!

9. I am still listening to the House, it is still going on
I wasn't able to hear our speakers in the Senate - I'd like to hear or read the transcripts of those speeches, it is important to me. I am underwhelmed with the effort of the house speakers, too much "we concede" this fraud! I am glad that they are taking some kind of stand but we much make more of this that a note in history and not be appeased by this flurry of activity.

15. May I ask..
If you can summarize what Clinton said? Yesterday when I called her office I got the impression that she was gonna act somehow...am really disappointed that she voted no. I figured she would, but I was hoping....

16. I can't remember exactly now, but I recall that..
she spoke without notes and with great feeling. She talked about how our democracy is the oldest but India's is the largest, and they had a fair election. I think she mentioned Ukraine and Iraq, and how our moral authority as a model of democracy is weakened if we don't take steps to preserve fair elections.

I'm hoping there will be transcripts somewhere soon.

17. Hound em Hound em
These people have to be reminded over and over and over that they promised to get the machines out of private hands. So for them that talked tough and voted not to object, FAXes with measured disappointment that their money failed to follow their mouths, followed by polite FAXes wondering how that legislation is going. Hound.
