8. Scurry?
Scurry for what? They pretty much knew this was coming and they knew that the Democratic approach was going to be exactly as it was. They shaped their rebuttals to paint us as "Sore-Losers" and you know what? It worked here in Tennessee.

No matter what we did today, the same end result would have occurred. Im just glad they got out there to show our fellow Democrats that they know and will try to do something about it. However, nothing will be done with the GOP controlling all branches of the government and sadly, we will be here in 2 and 4 years.

7. Exactly!
This did NOT happen in 2000 as it should have, it is one BIG step towards reforming the election system in the US. It will make it much more difficult for the repubs to vote against election reform, imo.

This challenge was NOT to overturn the 'election' but to put on record the numerous fraudulent practices to disenfranchise the voters.

20. You've GOT to be KIDDING! This issue is TOAST! The Repubs
won't lift a finger for voting reform, it will forever be bottled up in committees. They will have a loooooong memory of this day and will consider it payback to do nothing but symbolic gestures from this day forth. Congress will now turn its attention elsewhere. And if you think not, remember the Senate vote today: 1-74.

25. Care to share HOW this "war" will be carried out??? I believe the Dems
in congress will now fold their tents and steal away to doing the work of the minority party. They will deal with nominations, tort reform, SS reform, and election reform will barely be an afterthought. So, ClarkUSA, continue to believe in faries if you want. Reality is sometimes much more different.

To All The Paragons Of Democratic Virtue On DU Slamming Democrats
for refusing to take the GOP bait and question Junior's legitimacy...

Why don't you open your eyes and realise that those Senators just made the GOP members who spoke look like Fascists who could care less about Voting Rights?

The Democratic Senators I heard speak touched on the need for Paper Ballots, Constitutional Right To Vote and Civil Rights.

They pointed to bills they've been trying to get to the floor dealing with the very issues we all know need addressing.

Maybe if you put a lid on your sanctimonious hyperventilating you'd actually be RELEVANT to the cause of establishing a citizen's Right To Vote.Ê

34. Repukes wanted Democrats to act like the radical fringe today....
A Repost of a comment by JI7:
Republicans wanted Democrats to do this today
but only if the dems went up ranting about how we won and Bush lost and other crap that we could never fully prove and that republicans can use like they did with the few clips from the wellstone memorial against us.
but instead what they got was democrats in reasonable passionate patriotic voices calling for voting reform so out system can be as fair as possible for all. that it's not about party but about america.
while the republicans on the other hand are the ones who come off as paranoid hateful assholes. Ê

40. The strategy was to force open a public debate on election reform....
Edited on Thu Jan-06-05 05:05 PM by ClarkUSA
it was never to overturn the results of the election, which would have been impossible even had every single Democrat had voted AYE. There simply is not
enough votes in Congress. If every Democrat did stand up in Congress today
and yelled about how Bush really lost, then the GOP would have had a field
day with the infinite amounts of negative spin they could create, because BOTTOM line, there is no definitive "proof" (mainly because there was no way to forensically examine computer records due to GOP obstruction and BBV footdragging).

Granted, it would have been nice if more than Boxer stood up to challenge, but
that would have been strategically useless to the goal of forcing the debate
about the shenanigans of Election 2004, which many Democrats enjoyed reciting
BOTH in the House and Senate. The whining about why more didn't stand up is purely emotional. We had 33 House Democrats stand up and challenge....and
one extraordinary Senator who will go down in herstory.

The strategy was to create an historic moment when Democrats craftily paint
the GOP into a corner by emphasizing the disenfranchised vote as well as the partisan tactics of scumbags like Ken Blackwell (good luck on him being Gov. of OH after this). Today was never about torches and pitchforks, it was about
the opposition party playing it smart. The Repukes looked really angry and bothered because they know that millions of Americans tuning into C-SPAN will get to hear some real words of concern that can only make anyone listening to
think twice about how "clean" an election 2004 was. And these people vote.

Now Democrats have the wind at their backs when they introduce election reform
bills. The GOP can't very well let the bills die now....because they know that the
Democrats and some good Republicans as well as many Independents will ask, "WHY?" after this and come to their own conclusions.

When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat, did anybody think it would lead to the Civil Rights Act ten years later???

Today's action will lead to a Voter Rights Act...it will take time and alot of determination to force THAT through, too. We are all walking in Rosa Parks'
footsteps.

It's like watching Newt Gingrich lecturing Bill Clinton on morality and lying when he
was conducting a 17-year long affair with his secretary whom he later married
after serving divorce papers to his wife when she was in the hospital getting chemo.
