Long-term, I think this is the only solution to this mess.
It shouldn't be too hard to create voting systems which more accurately (and verifiably) reflect "the will of the people" this crazy-quilt jumble of caucuses, primaries and media horse-races followed by black-box voting, conflicting exit polls and skewed Electoral College weightings.
The systems at www.accuratedemocracy.com are currently programmed using just Microsoft Excel. If some programmers rewrote these systems to make them web-based, we could very quickly have a system which let people hammer out consensuses on anything from local to national to global issues.
Could it be any worse than letting a voting bloc of a few tens of thousands of anti-gay-marriage voters in Ohio control the fate of the world for the next four years?

The GOP is in control of the White House, both houses of Congress, the Supreme Court and much of the media. When you say "It shouldn't be too hard to create voting systems which more accurately (and verifiably) reflect "the will of the people"", you fail to account for the fact that the GOP likes it the way it is and will fight like hell to keep the status quo.
That doesn't mean we don't try, but we have to be realistic about the difficulty of the task.
