Tonight on Countdown
------------------------------------------------------

It's time. Alberto Gonzales goes before the Senate, which must consider him for Attorney General amid concerns that he supported the torture of prisoners. Critics say that paved the way -- in no small part -- for the abuses of Abu Ghraib.

Countdown w/ Keith Olbermann broadcasts LIVE at 8 pm et, and the count is never complete without you. Join us.

By the way, go ahead and send questions for tomorrow's NEWSQUIZ if you got 'em.... to

Attorney general nominee Alberto Gonzales vowed on Thursday to abide by international treaties on prisoner treatment if confirmed, but Senate critics asserted that policies he supported led to the torture of terrorism suspects at U.S. military prisons. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6793895/

* A challenge to OHIO. Senator Barbara Boxer of California stood with the members of the Congressional Black Caucus to challenge the electoral vote from Ohio.

* ANDREA YATES capital murder conviction REVERSED.
An appeals court on Thursday overturned the capital murder convictions of Andrea Yates, ruling that a prosecution witness gave false testimony that may have influenced the jury that convicted her in the drowning deaths of three of her five children. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6794098/

* World leaders pledged Thursday to work together to help tsunami-shattered regions recover from the worst natural disaster in living memory, saying it was a race against time to get aid to survivors before they succumb to disease. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6754820/

* The WACKIEST consumer warning label.

That's some of what we're working on for tonight's show.

Finally,
A dog survived a flight in an eagle's claws then endured a week of sometimes subfreezing weather before finding its way home, a veterinarian said Wednesday. "He was chilled, but he seemed to be able to walk," John McIlhattan said, referring to Freddie, a 13-year-old Pekingese mix. "He seemed remarkably chipper for what he'd gone through." http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/D/DOG_SURVIVOR?SITE=NWCN&TEMPLATE=STRANGEHEADS.html&SECTION=HOME
Hey, every dog has its day.

South Africa's Nelson Mandela, one of Africa's most committed campaigners in the battle against AIDS, announced that his only surviving son had succumbed to the disease on Thursday. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6794320/

Canadian health officials are drafting a proposal to prevent Internet pharmacies from selling mail-order prescription drugs to U.S. consumers, a spokesman said Wednesday, a move that would essentially kill a $700 million industry that has become increasingly popular with underinsured patients in search of cheaper medicine. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6791822/

It's not enough to reduce "bad" cholesterol to prevent heart attacks because a substance called CRP also must be kept low, doctors said Wednesday in a finding that could save tens of thousands of lives. Fortunately, it appears that statins - the same types of drugs that have been shown to reduce low-density lipoprotein or "bad" cholesterol - also bring down CRP, or C-reactive protein.
