I was part of the recount in Cuyahoga County, and at each table, the BoE was represented by one Democrat and one Republican. These 2 people were allowed to speak to us - the representatives of the 4 parties - and there was a lot of chit-chat which eventually, at least for me, slid into a political discussion.
I explained that my personal reason for being there - my personal crusade - was voter suppression in Ohio. I gave my spiel, talked about evidence, Damshroder in Columbus, Blackwell throughout the state... and which BoE rep. do you think was sympathetic about voter suppression? Which one thoughtfully listened to me and respected what I had to say? The Democrat? No. The Republican. The Democrat didn't really listen, she was too busy slamming voters for being stupid ("they should know they can't just vote after moving, they have to re-register, there are rules!") or trying to rationalize why more machines were sent to the suburbs ("we know how many voters are going to turn up at the polls ahead of time") or putting the blame on pollworkers for not being knowledgable about provisional ballots and not being careful about precinct tables ("we train and train and train them, it's not our fault they don't listen.") I kid you not. I don't know how prevalent this kind of thinking is among Democrats working at the BoE's throughout the state, no way of knowing that. But I'm sure that being an aggressive partisan liberal who's first thought is the voter does not top the list of characteristics when a Democrat is chosen for the Boards, or even as employees - not in THIS state, with Blackwell so aggressivlely running the show.
(about the need to re-register after voting, I replied, "that's not common knowledge, people don't know that" - and the Dem said, how can they not know it?" - I said, it's just not known. And the Rep. agreed with me. Truly sad.)
Just my 2 cents. Actually, that was long, so I guess it was a nickel.
That's what we're up against.
