2. List of BOE names in Ohio
http://www.sos.state.oh.us/sos/boe/

You can download it pdf or excel.

What you are going to find are people who are funded by their counties. The counties keep the budgets low for the BOE. Perhaps so they will be against conducting recounts so their already tight budgets isn't stretched more. Too late to change a damn thing, but if it weren't, the funding issue is one that needs work.

3. this is a long anecdote touching on what you're saying...
I was part of the recount in Cuyahoga County, and at each table, the BoE was represented by one Democrat and one Republican. These 2 people were allowed to speak to us - the representatives of the 4 parties - and there was a lot of chit-chat which eventually, at least for me, slid into a political discussion.

I explained that my personal reason for being there - my personal crusade - was voter suppression in Ohio. I gave my spiel, talked about evidence, Damshroder in Columbus, Blackwell throughout the state... and which BoE rep. do you think was sympathetic about voter suppression? Which one thoughtfully listened to me and respected what I had to say? The Democrat? No. The Republican. The Democrat didn't really listen, she was too busy slamming voters for being stupid ("they should know they can't just vote after moving, they have to re-register, there are rules!") or trying to rationalize why more machines were sent to the suburbs ("we know how many voters are going to turn up at the polls ahead of time") or putting the blame on pollworkers for not being knowledgable about provisional ballots and not being careful about precinct tables ("we train and train and train them, it's not our fault they don't listen.") I kid you not. I don't know how prevalent this kind of thinking is among Democrats working at the BoE's throughout the state, no way of knowing that. But I'm sure that being an aggressive partisan liberal who's first thought is the voter does not top the list of characteristics when a Democrat is chosen for the Boards, or even as employees - not in THIS state, with Blackwell so aggressivlely running the show.

(about the need to re-register after voting, I replied, "that's not common knowledge, people don't know that" - and the Dem said, how can they not know it?" - I said, it's just not known. And the Rep. agreed with me. Truly sad.)

Just my 2 cents. Actually, that was long, so I guess it was a nickel.

That's what we're up against.

5. You are so right
I was part of the recount in Greene Co...I wasn't able to start up any conversations with the BOE reps, so it was impossible to tell which was which, except for the Dem head of the BOE...also the County head of the Dem party...and he was all defensive and obstructive (taking the recount as a personal affront) he wants to go completely electronic...thinks any problems were because he wasn't allowed to institute E-voting this time!

6. yes - absolutely!
That's exactly the impression I got from the BoE employees in Cuy. County - that it was a personal affront to them that we were there at all. I never at any point thought that individual employees of the BoE were to blame for anything, and neither did the lawyers, who bent over backwards to to polite and cooperative with everyone, and stressed to us again and again to be the same.

But then - having said that - there may have been a serious CYA mentality going on, too. When other observers were noticing the discrepancies in the polling books, they snatched those books away - whoosh! - like there was really something to hide. It's almost impossible not to suspect some kind of complicity when they react like that.

And at first, I thought the Republican was the Democrat, and the Dem was the Rep, because the Republican was initially subdued and all-business, but friendly, while the Dem was very gruff and - like you said - defensive. Talk about your bookcovers.

8. I know what you mean
In Warren Co. just this week, I was there when another volunteer was looking at the poll books and pointed out a pretty serious discrepancy in the records. The BOE worker, who had until that point been all friendly and nice, suddenly became all defensive and tried to tell us the information was locked away and couldn't be opened for 60 days...when it was pointed out that it had actually been 61 days since the election, she got all flustered and disappeared into another room, came back and said she had opened the "mystery" package and couldn't find the information we were requesting...then pretty much just blew us off. Very clock and dagger feeling...

7. You are correct
One of our Reps even spoke to this in reply to the repukes telling us how fair everything was. Sorry I can't remember which Rep it was.
