My letters to Sen. Byrd & Sen. Rockefeller |

Re: Your unsubstantiated Nay vote on Ohio objection
I am sorely disappointed that you bowed to the Republicans in power and voted Nay on the objection to the Electoral Votes from Ohio today. I have long admired you and your work in the U.S. Senate but I do not know if I can support you any longer.* Free and fair elections would be the bedrock of our democracy if we allowed them to be but it appears that they will not occur when good people remain silent and allow "irregularities" and "glitches" and voter intimidation and fraud to govern our elections.
Regretfully yours,
/k8conant/
* To Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), I wrote instead: Because of this vote and your voting record I know that I will never vote for you to represent those of us in the 2nd District of West Virginia

I am also disappointed that Byrd and Rockefeller failed to dissent, but it was not unexpected. I suspect that Rockefeller is a careerist, and his future will weigh heavily on his decision to go against the flow of Congress. Byrd, OTOH, really let me down by his vote. He's getting toward the end of his career and he shouldn't feel bullied by Congress. I didn't see him speak, but I'm sure he expressed himself well.
Considering what's at stake, I feel pretty good about the public eye that election reform got today. Now the hard part begins, keeping them on task and actually work towards fixing our voting system.
