My Reasons Why Today Was or Can Be Wildly Successful
We must face reality. As distasteful as it is, we are the minority party in all branches of government so there is only so much we can accomplish, none of it along partisan lines. Because of the percentages in congress, there was absolutely no way the objection was going to be upheld. As hard as it is to swallow, we cannot afford to alienate more moderate members on the other side of the aisle. They do exist. Therefore, the democrats made a prudent decision.

They needed exactly one Senator to force the debate and that’s what they presented. The eloquent Senator Boxer who can easily hold her own becomes the “go-to guy” and the focus of Republican scoffing and derision. A handful of Senators and Representatives speak in favor of election reform and open the door for Republicans to turn up their noses at the subject thereby positioning the Democratic party as the one that cares about voters’ rights. Every single Senator standing in opposition to the certification of Ohio really wasn't necessary as much as it would have been fun to watch.

Again I think they made a prudent decision by focusing on election reform and voters’ rights rather than the outcome of this particular election. That makes the issue even bigger and can appeal to every American of any political affiliation. Most importantly can bring moderate Republicans on board. This posture probably gives us a better chance of avoiding a stonewall into an investigation of the election. Less incentive for defensiveness.

This is where we come in and I think it ties into Senator Kerry’s letter of January 5. At this point we become not only important, but absolutely key. We must keep the dialogue going and keep it visible. I suggest everyone do the following:

1. Write a non-partisan letter to the editor that does not hint at your party affiliation expressing dismay at the republican response to the very basis of a legitimate democracy. Point out the discrepancy between the democrats talking about election reform and the republicans talking about the outcome of this election, particularly the irony with respect to the Washington gubernatorial race.

* Feel free to post sample letters here for ideas to share. There are two here. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=203&topic_id=255746&mesg_id=255746

2. Write letters to your two senators and your representative. If they rose to speak in favor of election reform, praise them. If they rose to speak in opposition, chastise them. If they chose not to speak, inform them that you watched the proceedings with interest and side with those who would protect and defend our democracy.

* Special note to those in the Florida 8th. Please write Rep. Keller and ask him if his advice of “let it go” is the same advice he is giving his fellow Republicans in Washington state.

Encourage sympathetic friends, relatives, co-workers and acquaintances to do the same by sharing what you sent and showing how much you care.

3. Keep active in local democratic politics as much as you possibly can to reclaim local positions eroded over the last three decades. If it is realistic, become a precinct captain and have house parties, first for issues and then ultimately in 2006 for candidates. Take the opportunity to meet fellow democrats in your precinct who may not be informed.

4. Do not lose hope. As frustrating and disappointing as the election outcome is, we did accomplish something today. We lost, but we know we won. We are not alone.

Edited on Thu Jan-06-05 07:32 PM by katinmn
I'm a little ticked right now.

I already sent thank yous to Sen Boxer and Rep. Conyers. More to do tomorrow.

I agree we need to stay involved. We've seen what we can accomplish. It was like moving a frigging mountain and we did it!

One more thing: We should put the same efforts into media reform.
1) Pick up where we started on boycotting. Unless we can buy TV stations, the best option is to get them in the pocketbook through their advertisers.
2) Support our online media and get others to rely on them, too. They brought us the truth. We can advertise with them, buy their books, frequent their sites.

31. Why go half-way??
Don't waste time attempting to hurt the MSM when a much more appealing political poster is to demand their break-up. We gave it a try, the results haven't been very good, so let's re-regulate the media? In this particular issue, we, the People, should split up all the media into honest, independent, corporations.

This will never come from a DNC Democrat. But it would have enormous popular appeal. And marketing it to our natural base would be quite simple.

I think our politics have outgrown its current "shell" of defeatism and collaberation that is taking place in Washington.

The party needs to cast off the past and really decide how we want to run our party.

Yeah...Don't need to emphasize the electoral loss...But, no doubt voter's rights were supressed...That should be a federal crime. A voter's right lost, the election is questionable regardless of outcome...Those Democrats who call this much ado about nothing need be ashamed for cowardice...
The fairer minded Republicans are few and far and those few moderates probably, deep down know voters were screwed...Think even John McCain might be in that category. At least he should be after SOuth Carolina....Those few enlightened Republicans..We need not worry about our hurting their feelings...
George Bush will dig a deep hole for those few moderate Republicans in the blue states...

42. Voter suppression IS a federal crime.
Edited on Fri Jan-07-05 12:56 PM by Pacifist Patriot
Today I wrote to several members of the house and senate reminding them of that and telling them I expect a criminal investigation regardless of who won the election.

ETA: And just because I think this strategy is prudent, doesn't mean I'm not mad as hell. I am indeed, but I'm also going to be realistic about how to go about fighting for voters' rights.

37. Totally agree
Dems were so on message at the electoral certification. No one can be against voting rights! We have to frame things that will get some from across the aile to join us. Like the neo-cons, we need to be as much on-message as possible, but we can't take the low road, and we can't be bitter partisans.

How do you get out of a hole?
Only the High road will lead us to victory!

Which may work to our advantage. If we believe they cheat, and they believe we cheat, then everybody is FOR voting rights and voting integrity. Even the most twisted neo-con should be for this, if it is framed the right way.

45. That's the "Nixon was wrong" strategy...
...referring, of course, to the 1960 election which so many conservatives think was stolen by Kennedy but Nixon had the "good grace" not to contest "for the good of the nation" (haw!).

I know the reality was far more complicated, but since the Republicans are trying to paint the Boxer Rebellion as "sour grapes politics" (as if the Republicans haven't been practicing that since Roosevelt), but that myth is so blindly accepted by some that we can use it: just argue Nixon was wrong (how hard can THAT be for Dems, eh? ;) )

Nixon was wrong, any and all irregularities should be investigated, then and now. The real sour grapes is not investigating, not trying to ensure the integrity of the system, and then spend the next forty years moaning about how "they" cheated.

43. Exactly and I think this tactic moves some of the
spotlight so investigations can proceed without unnecessary defensive countermeasures. I don't think this takes any pressure off of criminal investigations into the conduct of election 2004. If anything, it should allow it to continue without contention over outcome. If the evidence proves otherwise, let the chips fall where they may. In the meantime, we need to get a Democratic majority into the Senate for when impeachment proceedings begin in 2007.

50. Yes, we must keep this issue alive
We must keep fighting the election fraud issue or else the right wingers will try the same thing again in '06 and '08. Plus, if fraud can be proved then Bush might be impeached if the Democrats gain control of Congress in '06.

It can happen but we must keep fighting and keep hope alive.

52. Then you don't understand because
Edited on Sat Jan-08-05 07:59 AM by Pacifist Patriot
no one rolled over and played dead. The more I think about it, the more brilliant the move becomes. You do realize this was also designed to enter into the official record some of the testimony that was introduced on Dec. 8 at Conyer's forum, right? In reviewing the speeches, it becomes very obvious that much coordination happened behind the scenes. There was a definite design to get as much into the record as possible within the time allowed. Because of Republican refusal to attend the forum the testimony wasn't "official." Now it is.

Edited to add: I also don't think mobilizing at the local level is rolling over and playing dead. How do you think the Republicans entrenched themselves in the first place?
