I wish I could feel good about today - but I can't
I had my hopes up – I truly did. I hoped, albeit it with trepidation, that when the 6th came they would stand – as one - and roar the message out. Scream it with such conviction that the press would notice, the pundits would notice, and more importantly America would notice. Taking their cue from 101 pages of fraud meticulously detailed by Conyers and his staff, they would pin America on its collective posterior with tales of Blackwell and Diebold and Triad. And fraud. Yes, the F word would be spoken today – not from the mouths of the broad-brushed loonies, but from the hearts and minds of souls of those who read, and studied, and concluded that it could be nothing else.

Yet, when the time came, our representatives went, as per their custom, gently into that good night. On the Senate side, they left one courageous woman alone. Completely alone. Not a single Senator stood with her when the walk needed to be walked – no, they left her alone, on the island, an easy mark for the right now to cover in tin foil and marginalize. Instead, we got another dose of weak-kneed rhetoric designed to neither fool nor impress. Cowering in the face of the jack-boot, they “courageously” spoke of election reform, all the while prefacing their comments with a carte-blanche request for the other side to steal elections from now until forever. As car after car careens off the cliff, they talk of how important it is to have rescue crews available for each and every injured person, blindly ignoring the fact that until the cars are fixed the injuries will never abate. So afraid were they of taking even the smallest of stands that both the new and the old made sure to tell us all that they would not contest this election. Instead, they spoke of lines and disenfranchisement and spoiled ballots, thinking that this is the remedy. Come 2008, when Republicans provide machines for all but the dirty little software secret still lies fallow in the fields, what then? As votes turn 180 degrees under cover of darkness and Pioneers tend herd on our so-called right to vote, what then? Another “impassioned” speech by those worried about prospects over process?

The House, save the brave 33, finds itself in a similar situation, the cowardly 80+ there reciting the same “no convincing” evidence mantra that the other side uses. Comforting, yes? One hundred and one pages, and nary a bit of convincing evidence anywhere? Ah, well, wrap it up in yesterday’s paper and move on.

I would love to think that today was some type of victory, and that just the fact that someone stood up in some fashion is reason for glee. I cannot think that, for that puts me in a land of naiveté that I choose not to live in. Today was the change for Democrats to be Democrats again, and to take a page from their Republican counterparts and hit back. Hard. They didn’t. Save for Boxer, Tubbs-Jones, and the rest of the CBC they did virtually nothing. While I hate to say it, they will be ignored from now on, for they let their chance to once again be a force for democracy evaporate under yet another Byzantine gentleman’s agreement brokered with those who are decidedly not gentlemen.

I can only speak for myself here when I say that the activist who stood in the sleet and snow for Wes Clark is a pessimist today. I saw nothing (save for the Brave 35) to make me want to pick up the cry and work for a Dem in ’06 or ’08. I wish I could look at things with the rosy outlook of many here that find today to be the beginning of something, but I have been around the block far too many times. I grow tired of thinking that this time will be different, or that this time is surely the start of something different. Far from it. I see today as nothing more than the majority of the Democratic Party failing yet another test of party unity, failing to even bring all their members and their candidate to the floor for such a momentous event, and failing to provide myself and millions of others a reason for supporting them that does not begin with the phrase “because they’re not Republicans.”

To Ms. Boxer, Ms. Tubbs-Jones, Mr. Conyers and the rest of the CBC who proved their mettle today, you have my undying gratitude. May the rest of your party learn from your example, or may you find kindred spirits who do. You have shown me how democracy works, and you have opened my eyes. It is indeed a shame that today many of your own party closed theirs.

4. I agree
The performance and trust in the system by our Senators and Congressman was deplorable. Given the rare opportunity of corporate media interest and what is at stake, they should have protested fully and loudly. They should have sung their protests in Portuguese, naked, juggling greased monitor lizards. ANYTHING to make the front page in bold type rather than be an "other news" footnote under Gonzales' torture memos. Can't we learn anything from Rove?

It seems the foreign press has picked it up. Its up to liberal talking heads to rile the public now.

Maxine Waters was great. She never alluded Bush won anyway, even suggested the opposite.

9. Boxer was the only one to vote not to certify Ohio electors

The vote was 74-1 in the Senate.

Sorry if I confused anyone.

This is such a quoteable quote. Your sentiments reflect mine, as one who has voted Democratic since my 18th birthday in 1984.

You've sparked an idea for me. I will send a letter to my senators (Murray and Cantwell) and ask them why I should keep hope, why I should remain a Democrat, and why I should care.

:(

Edit for typos

that's all I ever get. Boilerplate.
It could've been a great day if everyone had stood up, I am choosing to see it as a good day.
Some good info got out, some people very brave and strong. We have some people to support, and that is good.
And we have some people to run others against next primary. And that's good to know.

Edited for spelling, and then added more because I wanted to be more positive.

7. Barbara Boxer urges us to look at today as a victory for Democracy
and not to be swayed by the yea/nay vote aspect.

Hilary Clinton along with others formally spoke out in support of Barbara Boxer, the Congress officially requested a "congressional investigation" into the matters that occured in Ohio, and today brings us one step further.

There is much to celebrate.

Thanks for sharing respectfully.

And hey, don't think I don't want to be proven wrong.

I'll eat as much fake crow as I can - if the need arises.

I'm a vegetarian, after all. :)

12. I totally agree with you
I know that everything's a process, blah, blah, blah, but I'm so disappointed. It's not that I expected the election to be overturned, but I did feel that the fraud and felony of this (s)election would finally be revealed to the world.

I work in a newsroom (of sorts) with about ten TVs hanging from the ceiling and I was the only person watching CNN for the vote! People really are, for the most part, apathetic about the deterioration of our country.

I'm so tired of people who are afraid to speak the truth.

Pathetic and sad.

14. Couldn't have said it better
I'm a new poster here but have been a lurker since October. I didn't expect the election to be overturned. I didn't expect the Ohio votes to be thrown out. I hoped the Democrats would back up those who signed the objection to make a noticeable statement. They tried to have it both ways. "I won't contest the electors, but I applaud my colleague for twisting in the wind." That obviously does not work in this business. Nor does it make press when the vote is 74-1.
I applaud those whose went on the record opposing the electors for the very reasons Conyers cited. I really don't see how it would have hurt the party for all to vote for objection.

"In the beginning of change, the patriot is a scarce man; brave, hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, however, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot" - Mark Twain

Today is a day for us to celebrate the courage of Sen. Boxer, and to morn over the loss of leadership and what was left of the spine of the democratic party. What happened today will undoubtedly be a blueprint for how the democratic party plans to deal with the new situation. Even if everything we've worked for is completely devastated, the American people will see these actions for what they truly are. You can't convince a hungry man that he's full.

For every right winger who tells you to get over it, you have five brothers standing with you pledging that that will never happen. For every news outlet that trumpets bush's win far and wide, you and I know that they only do what they can simply because they are hiding something. The media can cover up what they can, but if you put a dead fish behind a wall, the smell eventually leaks out. It's only a matter of time before the rest of the nation smells it.

It will be a long, hard slog, but in the end--even if the junta manages to steal another election, we will still be here. Their un-democratic tactics will be laid bare for all of us to see, and the media won't be able to cover it up. Yes it is true that many are going to hurt. More of them (and us) are going to die under this administration. It could take years to lay bare everything they've done, but when the last administration official falls, we will still be here.

In the interim the only thing we can do is yell at "our" members of congress. Even if nothing changes, and the democratic party continues in the direction it's going, we can at least give them and the republicans in power enough rope to hang themselves with.

18. Nicely said
I worry, however, not for the fact that we will be here, but for the fact of what "they" will have become.

I am selfish in the fact that I've past the half-century mark, so my time is limited and my energies waning. I want to see once again what I and countless others worked so hard to achieve during my younger days, but I see those gains falling by the wayside, with gay bashing taking center stage, yellow ribbons replacing "Love it Or Leave It" and blacks finding Jim Crow alive and well.

The bastards WILL over-reach - they always do. My question is simply where will our "leaders" be when they do? If i can't count on them now, why should I think they'll be there later?
