How about a full page ad in the Washington Post, folks?
I've just sent this to Michael Moore. Don't get pissed at him if he doesn't respond - I'm sure he's a busy man. I just thought of him because it seems like it's right up his alley. I'm posting it so you can get where I'm going with this. Is anybody out there willing to give time for canvassing or money to do this? I'm sure a bank fund can be set up in escrow - I've never done it but I can call the bank tomorrow.

What do you think? Hey kids, let's put on a show!

Hey Mike!

I'm just about to get on the Democratic Underground web site and see if anyone has an interest in canvassing Ohio's inner city neighborhoods to get signatures to be included in a full page ad in the Washington Post thanking all of those in the House and Barbara Boxer for the courageous stand they took today regarding the Ohio vote.

I will ask if people are willing to pitch the bucks to run such an ad, but I don't know how far that will go, and I will also put a call out for volunteers to get the names.

Please let me know if you are willing to supplement what is collected in order to make sure this ad runs.

My hope is that something like this will be, if not a wake up call to those Senators (especially, that asshole Voinovich), that no, things were criminally bad in Ohio and we, the ones who voted or couldn't, should be the ones to make that determination. It's not over, not by a long shot.

Don't know if you get a chance to log onto the DU website. I've mostly been on the 2004 election forum and the folks there speak highly of you.

www.democraticunderground.com. Look for me. I'm kitkat65

Peace. Thank you for your time and consideration,

Here's your ad: A giant black swastika, and under it, in small type...

"Ugly isn't it? But that's what you get when all the votes aren't counted."

6. If we raise enough of a stink for suppressing a political view, they
damn well better. Even better if MM hops on board. WIth his cred, it'd be no problem.

30. Nope, 'fraid not
I work for an organization that attempts to place "controversial" ads and billboards daily. There's no way they'd print an ad with a swastika. The Village Voice, maybe, the WaPo, no way.

we'd like. I agree that they'd never accept the ad, though.

10. Read yours--loved it. And yeah, we need to keep this from being buried
A full page ad can't be buried. Maybe bird cage liner but not if say... we were able to post one precinct or ward per week. Is that hoping for too much? But can you imagine how embarassing that would be to the republican party especially here in Ohio that their own constituents are praising a senator from another state for watching their backs? All of those Ohioans inadvertantly saying you let us down - shame on you.

5. We need to start somewhere.
And I think we should push the fairness doctrine, which is clearly in the pubs best interest (so they should def. support it) because of the obvious liberal media bias.;)

8. Well, if some wealthy person wants to buy, sure. But ---
if it's a matter of raising $25 bucks here and $50 bucks there, wouldn't the $10,000 or $20,000 or $50,000 raised be put to better use to support the media THAT ACTUALLY REPORT THE NEWS? The media who often have dedicated but practically broke staffs?

Like DU. Like Common Dreams. Like Online Journal. Like TruthOut. Like Pacifica Radio. Like Alternet.

Since the mainstream media dances to the corporate tune, like Congress, we need to support independent media who will support journalism, democracy, and grass roots citizens.

I won't give one damn dime to the Washington Post.

21. I understand your frustration
Edited on Thu Jan-06-05 09:31 PM by kitkat65
I chose the Post for several reasons

Yes, it is mainstream but they DID have that Watergate thing going for them at one time. But doodly lately, really. Voters taking an ad out says: if you refuse to address this issue, then we will.

I agree the MSM hasn't done their job and that's why there wasn't the outcry that there should have been. But at the beginning isn't it easier to try to reach as many people as you can in the beginning to at least get the attention and then you can slowly bring the discussion into the blogs and online journals with good reputations. People aren't going to automatically come to us, we have to reach out to them.

The Washington Post is THE newspaper for the D.C. and outer areas plus it's nationally and internationally known.

And it's right in the heart of where all the federal decisions of this country are made. We are throwing the dead body right on their doorstep.

At least the way I see it, taking an ad out with actual voters sigs, it takes the discussion and debate out of the politicos and MSM hands' and gives it back to the people namely the ones who got screwed and STILL feel that way.

It says "Look, we appreciate you standing up for us and we laud you for that effort. We help those out who did stand up for us because once the repugs start to attack them AND WE KNOW THEY WILL they just start looking more and more like the hypocrites they are."

11. Plus we get to throw something in their face that sounds "ethical"
I really think, since the Republicans are so good at finding these wedge issues, renaming them to something the American public feels good about, and then taking them on as their own, we need to do the same.
For instance: in AZ, our governor just told the legislature that she is going to put the Gay Marriage constitutional amendment on the ballot in 2005. She knows that the legislature is pushing for 2006 since they know they can use it like they did in 04. So now, the republican heavy legislature looks phony when they complain about it.
Let's expose these people for what they are, self-serving hypocrites.

<edited for disclaimer>

Full-page ads in OH papers, with information as to how to contribute, on a bipartisan basis, to Election Reform, and an acknowledgment of the worst instances of irregularities.

Or is that too utopian? :)

And your idea of having inner city members who suffered the disenfranchisement sign it is a wonderful idea. What a way to raise consciousness about an issue.

I write to MM. He hasn't responded yet, but let's hope he does to this.

On the other hand, do we really need him?

17. By the way, is Voinovich more of a jerk than DeWine? Both of them were
absolutely deplorable in their representation of the Ohio voters.

And the way they threw that racist editorial around as proof.

I pm'd you about mailing your letter to the editor around to the media.

31. Sometimes even the tiniest ads get great attention...
Remember the lady who wrote My Big Fat Greek Wedding? She put a tiny ad in the paper advertising a stage performance of her script and Tom Hanks's wife saw it and went to the show and the rest is history. Don't underestimate the power of even the very tiniest ad.

Even if you only raise a few hundred dollars right here on DU, you can come up with SOMETHING that will still get the point across.

35. Like the idea
I was thinking of adding (in parentheses) after their names what their experience with voting was.

John Doe (spent 6 hours in line but had to give up to go to work) • Jane Doette (line wait - 7.5 hours

I'm currently trying to figure out how to use my web space in order to post graphics to give a graphic idea of what these could look like

Kicking it back up for more suggestions and volunteers to do some ground work.
