Tell the Republicans They Brought it on Themselves!
Edited on Fri Jan-07-05 02:26 PM by Bill Bored
Tell all your Republican Reps that they brought the Electoral Challenge on themselves by NOT enacting legislation to require the voter-verified paper ballot (VVPB) and random audits to verify the vote. They are the ones who have broken the system. We are just trying to fix it.

See:
<http://www.verifiedvoting.org/article.php?list=type&type=43>

I have a proposal for this forum:

Tomorrow, (Saturday) instead of posting here, for one day or as long as it takes, write as many letters to as many "elected" officials as you can, particularly Republicans, and especially Hastert, DeLay and Frist, and most importantly, to all your state representatives who actually make most of our election laws, and tell them:

1. The Republicans brought it on themselves (see above);

2. The vote is unverifiable in many states, and that's an inescapable FACT;

3. We need a voter-verified paper ballot, and random auditing of same to verify the vote in EVERY state and in DC;

4. Let them know that the paper alone doesn't help because without the audits, it's just a placebo.

After you're done, come back here and post some of your writing to give others the impetus to do the same.

What do you think people? One day away from this website (which let's face it, is highly addictive) to help save Democracy isn't too much to ask, is it?

And on edit, let me say that I think what scares them the most is that We the people will lose our illusion of democracy. If we can show them that we have, they must act, or be denounced as outright totalitarians.

11. "real" Republicans won't stand a chance in this system any more than
Democrats do.
If you're not a bush criminal or a far right idealogue, you won't make it past the primary.

The entire body politic will be consumed by the bush cancer, until there is nothing more to steal. Then it will move on, probably S. America next.

I think a lot of paleo cons already get this.

We need both parties on board, but the Dems have already been trying to fix this for 2 years. The Repubs didn't even let it come to a vote in either house. This shows they have NOT been serious about fixing the system or inspiring our confidence in it. They need to know that we know! The jig is up!

7. Thank you for this idea
I was somewhat frustrated in the run-up to yesterday because Alaska has very entrenched Republican Congresspeople and I felt it would probably be completely pointless to contact them regarding the voting "irregularities." But I noticed that Uncle Ted Stevens looked rather irritated about the whole thing yesterday as he was presiding (he ALWAYS looks irritated, but especially yesterday), and I think that letting him know that the antics of his Republican party brought this interruption about might get him going just a little bit more. I like that idea. I love it when he has tantrums. I don't really wish that he'd have a heart attack or a stroke or anything, but he IS getting on up there in years. ....

19. Excerpt from my letter to my state reps
Edited on Sat Jan-08-05 12:09 AM by Bill Bored
This is from just before the Electoral Challenge. You should of course make reference to that now and adapt this to your state. If they use DREs already, take out the part about marking ballots by hand and op scans but leave in the part about auditing. You get the drift. I'm just posting this as an example.

Letters to Republicans in Congress should tell them they brought the electoral challenge on themselves by not passing verifiend voting legislation the last 2 years. These could take a more aggressive tone, IMHO, but without the use of profanity, OK?

>>
It is a little-known fact that in many states in our nation, the vote
has become unverifiable. It has been privatized and computerized without the necessary paper records and random auditing procedures by which it can be verified. Computer source code cannot be inspected at the time of the election and computer security can be lax or nonexistent, allowing manipulation of the vote data and the counting process itself. Connections to central tabulators are made via potentially insecure modem lines or the Internet, adding another point at which tampering can occur to affect election outcomes in real-time. Altering only a handful of votes per precinct can change the outcome of a close election. How could this possibly be detected without the proper safeguards?

Boards of election, however well intentioned, do not have the requisite knowledge, staff and experience to manage large scale distributed computer networks. I know this because I do it for a living and I am aware of what's involved.

In addition to being prone to outright fraud and manipulation
(deliberately not counting votes in accordance with the intent of the
voters), touch screen voting machines (also known as DREs) can be
programmed to "default" to certain candidates, to prohibit voting for
straight-party tickets, or to vote for a certain candidate or issue in
lieu of an undervote or overvote. And any or all of these can be
programmed to occur ONLY on the day of an election, making them
undetectable during the pre-certification process.

Most of these problems have actually been documented in the 2004
election, prompting widespread allegations of negligence, fraud and
malfeasance and undermining the electorate's confidence in our voting
system which is the very core of our democracy. You can view the
incident reports (which are probably only a subset of the actual
incidents that occurred) from the Research Maps at:

https://www.voteprotect.org/index.php?display=EIRHome

Do you really want to go down this road in our state?

To avoid these problems, I want state law to require paper ballots
marked by hand, and random audits of these ballots to verify the vote count.

Paper ballots can be counted by hand or optical scanners and provide a
permanent, auditable record of the vote. It is easy for voters to use
paper ballots, and our Boards of Election know how to safeguard and
handle them.

To fulfill HAVA accessibility requirements, voters with all disabilities can use a ballot-marking device, such as the Automark, and still vote on the same paper ballots as everyone else. Another alternative is the use of ballot templates, which are inexpensive and work well in Rhode Island and in other countries.

I don't want to cast my vote on a computer. And elections are not just
about my vote, they are about the will of the people - all voters.
Computers do not allow the public oversight that throughout history has been the only way to ensure election integrity. I don't care whether the computer makes mistakes due to innocent or malicious errors. The problem is that no one can observe what is going on inside the computer, and that opens the door to undetectable errors and the potential for fraud.

Optical scanners are useful for the counting of paper ballots, but they are still computers, and their use opens the possibility for software defects, malicious code, or back door data manipulation, all of which could affect the results of our elections. While I support the use of optical scanners to count paper ballots, before they are used we need the following protections put into law:

(1) All software used in electronic voting and ballot tabulation
equipment must be freely available for public examination.

(2) Wireless communication devices in voting and tabulating equipment
must be banned. Such devices allow malicious individuals or
organizations to access and modify the software and tallies in the
tabulating equipment.

(3) Specify standards, procedures, and time-frames to guarantee voters
and candidates the right to petition for and obtain manual recounts
before certification of the winner of an election.

(4) Conduct mandatory random recounts of at least 5% of precincts.

(5) A citizen's advisory committee, which shall include election
officials, representatives of the disabled community, and independent
computer professionals without ties to voting machine vendors, shall
make recommendations for the choice of voting system for our state.

Sincerely yours,
>>

30. My letter to the Repubs - Senators and Reps:

January 8, 2005 FAXED TO:

Dear Senator Frist,

Please let me know if I have this correctly:

1.You don’t care that blacks, other minorities and poor folks in Ohio and other States were denied the right to vote on November 2, 2004?

2.You don’t think allocating too few voting machines in poor, minority voting districts is just as racist as what happened to Blacks when they tried to vote in 1964?

3.You think having a Secretary of State who is also the campaign manager of a major political party is somehow fair and non-partisan?

4.You don’t care that people in many States say they voted for one candidate on a touch screen machine, just to see the other candidate’s name come up on their summary of voting page? This doesn’t bother you?

5. You're okay with voting machines having no paper trails? It doesn't bother you that there's no way to verify that Bush actually won this election? The election is completely unverifiable? Are you kidding me?

6.It doesn’t bother you that poll records show more people voted for one candidate in some Ohio counties than were registered to vote?

7.You don’t want to find out why the Board of Elections in Warren County, Ohio was closed down and observers kicked out due to an alleged Level 10 terrorist threat during the counting of the votes in that County?

8.You believe that all of these allegations are a conspiracy theory started by Michael Moore or a fringe group? Really?

If any of my assumptions are incorrect, please let me know, because this is what I heard you and many of your Republican colleagues say after Congresswoman Tubbs-Jones and Senator Boxer challenged the Ohio electors last Thursday, 1/6/05. If I'm wrong, please set me straight because after what I heard last Thursday, it sounds as if many of our elected officials don't care much about voting rights, especially those of poor, minority folks, and that, Senator Frist, is exceedingly disturbing to me!

Sincerely,

Mrs. JoMama.

31. Per your request...Here is the letter I am sending also a partial list of
Republicans I am sending this to and thier information. If anyone can help with this list, please add to it. I don't remember any more names.

Here is the letter I am sending

<<Snip>>
On January 6, 2005, many Democrats decided to take a huge leap of faith in the American public. They stood and fought for the single most important issue in a democracy. Some three-dozen or more public representatives of democracy decided to do what they were elected to do. All of these individuals have earned the right to be called American patriots by the people they represent. They gave eloquent speeches and used words like "patriotism," "citizen voices," “We the People”, "bi-partisan," "protect our democracy," "respect," "integrity," "duty" and "honor." They did this because they were ASKED to do this by hundreds of thousands of American citizens.

In stark contrast, I listened to Republicans deliver despicable excuses that used words like "conspiracy theory," "during regular business hours," "sore losers," "move on," "X File wing" and many other disrespectful remarks. Understand that the remarks you made were televised and MANY American citizens, Republican and Democrat alike, were incensed and infuriated by these remarks. Every one of you was placed in office to REPRESENT the citizens of The United States of America. It is your duty to represent those citizens and MANY of them realized, after listening to your comments about their requests to their elected officials, that you have no intention of representing the American citizens of this nation.

It does not matter to America whether our Republican representatives believe the 102 pages of evidence they have been provided regarding wrongdoing in the November 2, 2004, election. We have now found our voices and will continue to do so through our grassroots efforts. “We the People” will continue to protest the behavior of ALL of our elected officials who refuse to hear our voices. We will continue to make noise regarding EVERY vote you make, EVERY bill you pass and/or sponsor, and EVERY committee you serve on, to the American public. “We the People of The United States of America,” are taking back our government. We have taken down names of ALL of those who oppose representation of their constituents. We also have recognized those who do. Amendments 15, 19, 24 and 26 will be upheld and taken seriously in this country.

It is the intention of American citizens across our nation not that Senator Kerry reside in the White House, but that EVERY American citizen who wants to vote has the right to have their vote counted, weighed and measured. It is the intention of the citizens of this country to have a fair and equitable system of voting. It is the intention of American citizens to make this issue THE number one item on our agenda. “We the People” no longer will sit idly by and watch our president, his administration and his party continue to lie to us regarding his “evidence” for war against nations, while ignoring “We the People’s” evidence regarding fraudulent elections in our OWN country.

The ball is now in your court. You are either with us, “We the People,” or you are against us.

<<end snip>>

35. You are absolutely right, the Repubs. are the ones that need
a darn good lesson in Democracy. Powell complains about the Ukraine and this is what we live with? BS! I'm copying your list, let's get writing!!!!!

39. Whoopee! I'm glad others see the need
Let's make sure they understand that they are being closely watched and that Americans aren't going to let it go anymore! We have been too complacent for too long.

46. And you have a great letter as well!
I missed it earlier. If you don't mind I would like to use portions of your letter.

I especially liked this paragraph: (Well Done!)

50. All are welcome to use any and all parts of my letter. I want the message
to be heard and could care less about whether or not it comes from my words or others. I completed my entire list of letters to all the thugs that spoke out against American citizens Thursday. Come Monday morning I will mail them all. I have thanked every Senator by email or snail mail and Boxer and Tubbs-Jones by both. I hope everybody realizes the importance of what they all did on the 6th. I also feel they need to hear from all of us, not just those within their districts. It has a very profound effect on them to see hundreds of thousands of email, faxes, and letters from individuals all over the nation. That is the only reason the Dem's felt secure doing what they did on Thursday. They are going to have a long haul dealing with Republicans for the next four years.

Edited on Sat Jan-08-05 07:40 PM by KatieB
even allow hearings on legislation, let along legislation to be introduced. These guys have NO interest in a fair election. Common - there are more poor people than super rich. They don't stand a chance if they don't cheat.

37. We have the Same problem Media Blackout.
I looked at the front pages of the two Newspapers here in town and nothing on those pages reflected what happened on the 6th. Instead was the AG Hearings of Gonzalaz. It was buried inside.

We have to get it out. Make Video copies of the Cspan coverage of contesting the Ohio Votes and donate it to your local Library, continue to write letters, to editors and local TV stations, request coverage. And talk to neighbors about what had happened. It was history in the making that was under reported. Will just be another footnote unless we continue to bring this out in the open.

Continue being the squeeky wheel, make noise, make those Fax machines smoke contacting those that are supposed to represent us. Demand It.

It's not over, until those reposible for this, are exposed, and procecuted and changes made in the entire voting system. I can not see moving on, there is nothing to move on too. The vote is compromised. :grr:

40. Media blackouts don't matter anymore
And,quite frankly, the media rarely ever covered this kind of stuff anyway. We are educating the American public, online, in our own publications, and by word of mouth. The word will spread and these thugs will go down for what they are doing to our Democracy.

38. The time is now. They need to be told that this time the public will know
where they stand. I'm sure if the issue is laid out for them, the people will be on our side on this. It's just about unspinnable if it's done right. Either they are for fair, verifiable elections, or they're not. Let's see Limbaugh et al try to twist this around.

41. My Letter To: Deborah Pryce
The Honorable Deborah Pryce,

I was appalled by the remarks you made concerning the contest of the Ohio electoral votes. Judging from your remarks, it is very obvious to me that you are blind to what really happened in Ohio concerning the presidential election.

I take your remarks quite personally, and I’m very upset that you would call me and my fellow Democrats, an extreme element of the Democratic party that are out to undermine, obstruct, divide and destroy. The Democrats are not trying to sow doubts or destroy the public’s confidence in our electoral system. They are trying to do just the opposite; they are trying to draw attention to the terribly flawed system we now have in place in hopes that our elected officials will fix the problem once and for all.

This issue is not about Republicans, and it is not about Democrats. The issue is not just about making sure that every vote is counted, and recounted, as your remarks implied. The issue is about making sure everyone that has the right to vote gets to vote.

Elected Democratic officials are not abandoning their jobs to public service, but you are. It is you that do not understand the facts. As my elected representative it is your duty to insure that we have an election system that is fair, non-biased and that everyone that has the right to vote gets to do so.

Other members of the Republican Party understand the serious problem concerning voter suppression that took place in Ohio because of Kenneth Blackwell. I ask you, as my Representative, to join with your colleagues as well as the Democratic Party, and work as a team to fix the problems so we do not have a repeat of the 2000 and 2004 election in 2008.

43. Great letter!
Are you going to send any more? I honestly feel we should send them out to all those that spoke. I am working on this list. I have thanked a little more than half of the Senators and Representatives. Mostly by email through Congress.org. I have also completed my list of Republicans that got my letter because of their despicable remarks!

They can shove their sanctity of the process right up their blue-blooded you know what! I hope the grassroots efforts can stay strong this time. I want to have complete belief in the counting of my vote in the next election. I will settle for nothing less. I want FEDERAL law regarding election officials and a paper receipt!

44. I have sent a few thank you letters...
... as well. I may work on a letter to my Republican Senators tomorrow, after I listen again or find text of their statements.

I wanted my letter to Pryce to be directly related to here statement. I saw no reason to list the numerous reasons of why I thought the election was stolen.

She knows that there was voter suppression in Ohio, and I feel that is specifically why she did not mention it in her statement. Not even once. All she could talk about was how the Democratic Party was out to undermine the public and we were just a few radical nuts.

Before becoming Representative she used to be on the city council here in Upper Arlington, Ohio, so her name is well known.

48. I'd suggest mentioning that the Repug leadership killed the previous
verified voting bills listed in the original post. You could add this as one of your points. Nothing wrong with combining the disenfranchisement issue with the verified voting one!

51. As a programmer, paper ballots are the only true form of fair elections
We must return to them or forever be doomed without a Democracy as we are now. We do not live in a Democracy, if we did our votes would be counted accurately.
