Heroes
This is going to be my last post in this forum for a while. I have my own opinions about what transpired in congress yesterday, but they are no more or less worthy than the others that have been voiced here. I owe an apology to the people I barked at yesterday. My behavior was uncalled for, and I'm sorry.

That having been said, I really feel like this forum has boomeranged in 24 hours from being an incredibly effective base of action to a depressing mudfight. The signal-to-noise ratio has made this place a fairly useless place all of a sudden. I understand that it is happening because people are working out their diappointments and anger and whatnot, and again, I do not discount those opinions.

But personally, I have no use for the doom and gloom right now, and so I am going to step out until a deep breath is taken. Either this place will return to being an effective platform for election reform, or it will become yet another DU room where making fellow liberals bleed is the sport of choice. Rather than continue to add to the bloodletting, I am going to tend to my knitting elsewhere.

If there is any doubt about how I feel about yesterday, the following should put that to rest. This will be a TO link in a couple of hours.

See you around.

Heroes
By William Rivers Pitt
t r u t h o u t | Perspective

Friday 07 January 2005

“I think of a hero as someone who understands the degree of responsibility that comes with his freedom.”

- Bob Dylan

As one of the journalists privileged to be able to report on the events which culminated in Thursday’s challenge to the Ohio Electors, I have had the chance to meet and observe a whole crowd of remarkable people. They deserve to be recognized.

David Cobb and Michael Badnarik: The presidential candidates for the Green Party and Libertarian Party deserve the lion’s share of praise and credit for the events of Thursday January 6th. Before anyone else came within a mile of pushing the pile towards some kind of national reckoning regarding the election ‘irregularities’ in Ohio, Cobb and Badnarik had their shoulders down and were throwing weight. Their lawsuits in Ohio may develop into a truly significant process, particularly if their motions to preserve evidence, examine the voting machines and depose the election players are allowed to proceed. The outcome and ultimate results of Thursday’s Electoral challenge may still be in the wind, but one thing is certain: Cobb and Badnarik forced the Democrats to do the right thing, and that makes Thursday a banner day for third parties in America.

Jon Bonifaz and Cliff Arnebeck: These two attorneys are at the heart of the Cobb/Badnarik legal effort in Ohio. In both the Ohio state court and the Federal court, they are working to bring these challenges to a fruitful conclusion. Bonifaz and Arnebeck have also been central in elevating public awareness of the problems we endure in our election process, and worked diligently to educate members of congress about what we face.

Bev Harris and Andy Stephenson: The two pillars of BlackBoxVoting.org, Bev and Andy basically killed themselves over the two years before the 2004 election to bring public attention to the catastrophic problems involved in ‘electronic voting.’ I have clear memories of crossing paths with Andy in Seattle, and remember being amazed that he was still on his feet. The bags under his eyes could have had ‘Samsonite’ stamped on them, but still he kept on. There has recently been a falling-out among the BlackBoxVoting crew, and I take no position whatsoever on that sad little soap opera. Whatever you may think about that, the fact remains that Bev and Andy were the first, and the best, advocates for election reform regarding these new machines.

Rep. John Conyers and his Judiciary staff: The ranking minority member of the Judiciary Committee played a central role in orchestrating the events which culminated in Thursday’s challenge. He organized hearings in Washington and Ohio to highlight the problems with the November election, educated his fellow members, and released a watershed report on the issues that will serve as a guide for any and all future actions. Conyers and his staff got the chariot rolling up on the Hill, and everyone you saw stand up and speak Thursday in Congress were basically hitching a ride with him.

Reverend Jesse Jackson: The motivation and energy brought to this cause by Jackson in recent weeks cannot be overstated. Reverend Jackson preached, cajoled, browbeat and pushed to make sure the challenge took place on Thursday. His presence in this struggle represents a new day, a combination of the mostly-white progressive reform movement and the African-American civil rights movement. This new coalition is going to have a lot to say and do over the coming weeks and months, and may come to be the decisive factor in the fight to make sure every vote counts, and every vote is counted.

Tim Carpenter and Kevin Spidel: These two men, who make up the backbone of Progressive Democrats of America, came out of the Kucinich campaign. Carpenter the former deputy campaign manager and Spidel the former national field organizer used the skills and contacts they developed in that campaign to bring enormous popular attention to the problems with the 2004 election. Both men have gone with out sleep for months and have spent countless hours on the road to push this issue.

Senator Barbara Boxer: It took a good degree of courage for Senator Boxer to stand up on Thursday and vote against the certification of the Ohio Electors. In the House, Republican Representatives accused her of aiding terrorism and betraying our troops in Iraq. Though such accusations are utter balderdash, they do carry a sting. In 2000, no Senator would stand with the Congressional Black Caucus to challenge what happened in Florida. Boxer, on Thursday, removed that stain, and is to be commended.

You the People: The greatest heroes in this process have been the ordinary Americans – the teachers and lawyers and builders and students – who took the time to write and call and fax and email members of congress in such volume that ultimately, the demand for action could not be ignored. By Thursday morning, every avenue of communication on Capitol Hill had become totally paralyzed by the amount of incoming messages from people who wanted to see something done. The other names on this list played their part, but were it not for you the people, their efforts would have come to nothing. It was an awe-inspiring performance, and was the reason why Thursday’s challenge happened.

There is a debate taking place now as to what, if anything, happened in congress on Thursday. Some feel that the failure of any Senator to stand with Boxer obviates the whole process. Others believe Thursday was a good step forward, the opening of a national dialogue on election reform, and proof that the people can force congress to act.

At the end of the day, however, I believe Thursday was a victory because of the people I have listed above, and because of all the other heroes I failed to name. All these horses are running together at speed, and have proven they can get things done. If you believe in the cause of election reform, be warmed by the knowledge that these men and women are out there, working for you, and their efforts have only just begun.

Edited on Fri Jan-07-05 03:25 PM by WilliamPitt
Tubbs-Jones came in at the 11th hour. It was decided that she should be the one to stand instead of Conyers, because she is from Ohio. Without Conyers, there would have been no Tubbs-Jones, and then no Boxer, etc.

Not denigrating her stand, but on the food chain of heroes in this, she is third on the list, and I can only write so many words.

Working tirelessly for Democracy and speaking out under fascism are the right stuff!

These heroes will be remembered as such by us, and by History.

13. It's a shame
that those who are disappointed can't stop and take a breath and not puke their emotions all over the forum. I've been angry and disappointed over any number of events but yesterday's brave display by Boxer and Tubbs-Jones is certainly not one of them. When I need to vent I do it in a more private way......this constant infighting on DU is most definitely counter-productive.

Hope you have a good break and that you will be back soon.

14. Understand your thoughts, but have one issue with the TO piece.
Conyers came out swinging officially on November 5th before Cobb or Badnarik, he and the Dems on the House Judiciary started this ball rolling.

But, I think it's great that you gave credit to everyone.

See ya when you get back, provided I'm still here. ;)

But please stop bashing the GD2004 forum. Plenty of us have stood tall and tried to bask in the victory we had yesterday. If you haven't notice, alot of young folks have tried to post doom and gloom and the always violatile members of DU have come to pick fights. That happens (I don't think a lot of them can stand it that we got someone to stand up in 2004 and they couldn't in 2000.)

Plenty of us are proud and we know we accomplished a hell of a lot. We will continue our efforts, you go rest. BUT STOP MAKING GENERALIZATIONS about this forum, please!

We plan on taking this energy the talking points of each "hero" and taking it to their homebase to mobilize the 6 point plan on reform that PDA has asked and will work toward. 35. Yesterday was a GREAT battle victory in a long war.
I am busy today writing thank you letters to all of the Dem Senators and Representatives who spoke the truth yesterday for election reform (no matter their votes), and pledging to work and support their efforts to pursue change.

There are some nasty threads here today (I generally don't bother with them), but there are also threads involving many dedicated people planning and organizing our on-going work regarding election reform.

One of the pledges I have made to myself, as we proceed with our work, is to re-double my efforts to spread the word to others about websites where people can get REAL news and information.

Thank you, Will, for your wonderful work!!!! I hope you stick around to help the train stay on track.

I return now to my work writing thank you letters.....

that the fight against election fraud has just begun. The event of the 6th has given us a better picture of who is supportive and in it for the long run. Many of my most effective efforts have come from being open to creative thought and were not posted here on DU. Don't get me wrong. I have come to love DU and have made some good contacts. Much can come from meeting with trusted people in person and we have built some powerful grass roots networks. Much of our power has not yet been realized. I do not doubt the awesome power of this movement. DU facilitates us and helps us to be better critical thinkers.

41. I will miss your posts, and I hope that you will consider this...
Many here, and elsewhere, are likely experiencing symptoms of grief/trauma, as in the following example of the 5 stages following a traumatic event. It would seem some are in various stages of coping with several aspects of political events, past and current, and more recently, the perceived "let down" of yesterday's events. They need encouragement, tough love, reason, etc. and time to get through the stages and they'll get there, at different rates! Please don't stay gone too long. We need your wisdom, reasoned arguments and hope. If the majority can work through their grief and get to the acceptance stage, perhaps they can then begin to reasonably deal with events...again. Or not...but we can always just ignore those that get stuck somewhere along the way. In any case, I'll find you online somewhere, I hope!
Here's a more elementary example of the five stages:
<<snip>>
"As an example, apply the 5 stages to a traumatic event most all of us have experienced: The Dead Battery! You're going to be late to work so you rush out to your car, place the key in the ignition and turn it on. You hear nothing but a grind; the battery is dead.

DENIAL --- What's the first thing you do? You try to start it again! And again. You may check to make sure the radio, heater, lights, etc. are off and then..., try again.

ANGER --- "%$@^##& car!", "I should have junked you years ago." Did you slam your hand on the steering wheel? I have. "I should just leave you out in the rain and let you rust."

BARGAINING --- (realizing that you're going to be late for work)..., "Oh please car, if you will just start one more time I promise I'll buy you a brand new battery, get a tune up, new tires, belts and hoses, and keep you in perfect working condition.

DEPRESSION --- "Oh God, what am I going to do. I'm going to be late for work. I give up. My job is at risk and I don't really care any more. What's the use".

ACCEPTANCE --- "Ok. It's dead. Guess I had better call the Auto Club or find another way to work. Time to get on with my day; I'll deal with this later.""

42. Your Heroes piece is beautiful
Edited on Fri Jan-07-05 03:59 PM by SueZhope
I thank you for all the work and
reporting you have been doing.
You are also a hero in this work.

I understand your frustrations with what happens here at DU. I am new
to being involved with something like this. The forum can get out of control .

Yesterday was a remarkable victory, the people were heard
This should not be invalidated. Those that have put there
blood sweat and tears into this work should not be invalidated.

Sadly I think that because many people are disappointed in the party they have
discounted yesterdays victory. perhaps in time they will see what happened
in a new light.

I hope that at some point you feel DU is for you again. :)

45. Thank you Will for everything
What I am looking for is not an endless analysis of yesterday. I am looking for a thread that gives me some idea of where to go from here.
I wrote thank you emails.
I donated for flowers.
I am trying to find a list of the Republicans who spoke so dismissively to send them a shame on you email.
I would love a thread or threads full of ideas on actions to take.
I want to move forward.

46. Please don't stay away too long Will.
I have just been here for 2 months so I don't know how many mudfights there have been in the past. I just know that this place has helped me remain optimistic after the election, not the opposite. Anytime you have such a large and diverse group of people you are going to get lots of conflict and opinions. I agree the teeth gnashing, and hand wringing was a bit much yesterday. Still I wish you would reconsider. One day does not DU make (or something like that).

BTW,The optimists came out after midnight in droves.
Thanks for the great post, even though the part about you leaving makes me sad.

49. ::Sniff::: Thank you Will, I am so proud of you as well as all Democrats
I feel we took a step on taking back our country. Sen. Boxer will always be a patriot in my eyes. Rep. John Conyers, no words can express the my awe for this man.

I am so proud to be a democrat today, as I was yesterday. And you know it's been awhile since a Democrat could truely say that.

Dont stay away too long Will, We have work to do and you are a voice of reason.

51. Eloquent, as usual
Eloquent and sincere. You are a writer for our times, Mr. Pitt.

There are other DU forums, Will, as plentiful and varied as the personalities that belong to this community. Don't throw out the baby with the bath water. I, for one, would miss your perspective.

Thanks to YOU for your courage and spirit.

53. The optimists were on their way home from D.C. last night...
Edited on Fri Jan-07-05 04:31 PM by demodonkey
many of us who were there found the day to be exhilarating and left Washington with a renewed sense of purpose. Things could have been different, yes maybe better, but a lot went RIGHT with what happened yesterday.

Election Fraud / Reform is serious issue which, after several bad elections, finally seems poised to get the attention it deserves. 2004 seemed to be a start, but this issue is not just about one election and is going to take time.

If anybody is not up for a long haul, fine. But let no one be so counterproductive as to discourage one of our most eloquent champions for truth in this (or any) matter. In fact, let's not discourage anyone who wants to make a difference and move forward.

Will, the main regret I have about my trip to D.C. is that due to goofy scheduling and being in the wrong place at the wrong time, I didn't get to meet either you or Andy S. in person. I greatly admire you guys for all you have done (each in your own way of course). THANK YOU!

:yourock:

Now let's ALL please keep up the good work.

59. Nice piece. I know that I was pissed off yesterday. I'm still angry but I
am also happy with what we achieved together. I wanted desperately for one senator to stand and we got much more than that. I'm taking some time to rant and calm down and redirect energy into thanking Conyers and Boxer publicly.
I'm confident others will do the same in their own way.

This is for you! Enjoy your well deserved break. Yesterday was wild in here, but most of us have setteled down and are ready to work.

This is a toast for all we have done and all we will do. I have faith, and I'm ready to work! :toast:

HALO In the realm Our Great Leader has called "the Internets," the members of a site called Democratic Underground have been busy. Hardly a bunch of grousing liberals, the many DUers get down and dirty with matters democratic, plunging into the frustrating details of things like how a presidential election might be tampered with, or the specific ramifications of tortured legislative language. It's hands-on democracy at its finest, and a central meeting place for those who do more than talk the talk of opposing an undemocratic presidential administration.

63. stepping out and deep breathes are good, but
the atmosphere has already shifted in less than 24 hours. a lot of good insight today. yes still the defeatists,.......whatever. there are way more posts of lets get to work

instead of jumping into the fight, i find it more effective to bring stillness to the emotion, then the deep breath comes and problems and issues can be resolved. skinner has done an excellent job with this site, i want it to be right up their in our new communications forum for news out.....having let go of tv media for ever

yesterday one of your posts did take me to the feel of the intellectual democrat and the elitist democrat who dismiss us. the people with you in dc looking at this board snubbed their nose at me, say what, i am working my ass off, giving up my life for this too, i am a part, i wont be so easily dismissed, not by repugs, christians or a part of democratic party. we are too good for that

anyway, i would like to see kerry get an interview with you or another internet writer. and give him the opportunity to speak to us, in the news internet. i dont do well blindly following and would like to hear kerry in a friendly interview opposed to an hostile attacking interview where he has to be so protective of himself. i think it would be interesting.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=203&topic_id=269011&mesg_id=269011

We are going to sidestep the mud and the naysayers and the apologists and the roadblocks and keep moving forward.

I for one have had it with the crap that we throw on each other instead of the right. Many of us are going to start a movement and keep going forward.

I understand your aggravation. Peace to you.

66. agreed ...many of us are sidestepping the mud, Will...
the atmosphere has already shifted (seabeyond's words)and good things are happening...arnheim has got a lot going on with organizing a task group for the next phase. I don't think things have degenerated too far yet or I would be outta here too. I think the positive responses to Jan 6 far outweigh the negative. I still believe...our cause is just.

As for group dynamics, I agree somewhat with "emit" above that you have to allow for people to go through a catharsis period to deal with a big disappointment. It might not be too rational a place to be when a turning point is reached. (Post traumatic syndrome is real). But in this case I take hope from it, because it shows how many out there REALLY care--such great disappointment shows a huge desire for something better...it will settle out and those who are in it for the long haul will stay. Others will take a needed break. We have done a good job here.

Thanks for your insights and perspectives, Will. Check in when you can. Meanwhile I will follow your blog. Thanks for the hippo and the tortoise story--if a hippo and a tortoise can bond after tsunamis in Africa, maybe there's hope for this DU group after the earthquake of Nov 2. Keep on writin. :)
