Has Jimmy Carter weighed in on 2004 election yet?

He standed that his group could never oversee the elections here because of the multiple ways the states run there elections. He stated that there was no way they could certify the vote in this country to many ways to rig it.

6. On October 29, Carter stated his position during an

interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air. He said then that his organization (the Carter Center) could not monitor the US elections because there are five criteria a nation must meet in order to ensure fair elections and the USofA has MEET NONE OF THE CRITERIA. Indonesia's elections have way more integrity than ours. Check the archived interview on the Fresh Air website (accessible from npr.org I think.)

I, for one, would like to hear more from him than mealy-mouth evasions

and non-sequitors ( what is this about it not being "legal" for him to speak out ???!!!).

maybe its considered unethical to say something being a former president?
I have no idea , thats why I am asking about it.

He might not be able to get involved on a formal level, but what about just his own personal view , i would think he could make a comment.

I thought in a democracy people were aloud to have freedom of speech?

But rest assured , it is not unethical, and it is CERTAINLY not illegal for anyone, including ex-presidents to speak directly to important issues. Some may regard it as bad form; who cares? The issue is a little more important than that... wouldn't you agree?

It's an excellent Q. you posed and an excellent thread. And if he's going around the world passing judgment on the legitimacy of other countries' elections he should share his thoughts about those in his own back yard... and not hide behind dodges like... "well, we're not set-up to witness elections as are held in the US."

I thought Carter was an honest man with integrity , not a wimp.
I remember he spoke against the war.

I was giving to the Carter Center but will not give any more unless
he speaks on this election. he can still come fourth and speak .
Now is the time.

I think it would be interesting to have a commission look into this with him at the helm of it. But he is only going to do something like that if asked.
