4. Didn't do so badly even without the changes from "official" results

Even if we dispense with revising the list from who officially done, they haven't done as badly as the conventional wisdom in the media.

For the sake of discussion, I'll assume that there was no undiscovered vote fraud in the 2004 election. In 2000, the Democrats won the popular vote, and there is no doubt (no matter how you argue about the recounts) that a majority of people in Florida intended to vote for Gore. Just eliminate the butterfly ballot issue, and Gore would have won.

Even if we accept the official 2004 results as valid, it is hardly a sign of a party in trouble as many claim. Take the situation of an incumbent President running during wartime, with the public scared over terrorism. Add to that an unprecidented negative and dishonest campaign to discredit the challenger. Under such circumstances, you would expect a landslide victory for the challenger. For Bush to win by such a narrow margin indicates a party which is very vulnerable when it will not have all the advantages it had in the next election.

7. I sometimes wonder if...

the concept of the Democratic Party being in shambles and eroding isn't an example of the "say it enough times in whispers and people will begin shouting it as the truth" tactic being used by the Republicans. Sure we've got a lot of work ahead of us and the party can use plenty of upgrading, but I don't think it's in its death throes like some seem to believe.

Of course we'll never know for certain until we get fair and transparent elections. ;)

8. I think that is part of the plan

Spread the idea that the Republicans are the only viable party, and people will back them to avoid being with the loser.

Besides the comments on Presidential elections, also note how the GOP victories in Congress have been exagerated. The Republicans would not have picked up seats in the House if not for the redistricting in Texas.

The Senate could be more of a problem long term. The loses in 2004 were cases of Republicans picking up the seats in red states as party realignment has proceeded. While the country is split pretty close to 50:50, there are more red states. Having the same number of Senators per state regardless of population currently gives the GOP an advantage.

That does not mean this is a permenent advantage. Younger voters and peole moving to the sunbelt will make some of the red states less clearly red. I also think that the Democrats best chances of turning more states blue is to concentrate on the west. The more individualistic, anti-big government conservativism of the west is quite different from the more traditionalist, religious conservativism of the south. Even the anti-big government tendencies of the west could be capitalized on by Democrats if they manage to channel anti-government feeling into oppositon to the ruling party. They also need to push policies such as abortion rights and allowing stem cell research as issues of getting government off of our backs (to turn Reagan's line to our advantage).
