I think I’ll be massively flamed on this, but I’d like to present the idea anyway, especially after hearing the rumor about Jeb in 2008.
Can we really expect that election reform will happen in the next 4 years? I’m hopeful, and will continue to work for it, but as long as the control for federal elections is at the state level and congress is controlled by the republicans, I think we’ll continue to see the same shenanigans over and over. What state will we be challenging in 2008? Pennsylvania? Michigan? If we can’t get true reform and accountability, I don’t think it will matter which candidate the democrats put forward, we’ll get screwed again.
A co-worker and I (we’re both longtime dems) were discussing our governor Arnold Schwarzenegger yesterday and confessed to each other that we had voted for him and were both surprised and impressed by his state of the state address. He almost appears to be a democrat misplaced in the republican party. He’s light years away from the current administration and seems to be an honorable man.
Now here’s my question. If they could pass the legislation allowing a foreign-born citizen to be elected, could you possibly support Arnold as a presidential candidate? Or another republican that isn’t joined at the hip with the current regime?
I’d like to hear any thoughts on this

Why do we have to go outside the country to find people to step in above those of us who have fought for the right to vote for this country?
I DON'T GET THIS SHIT!

Arnold is a repuke and they will never amend the constitution, but why are you using race and sex? What does that have to do with anything?

6. You are right about Arnold and about it being flamebait. |
|
Ultimately, the fact that he is a Republican and supports their party platform keeps me from approving of Arnold, or of acknowledging the wisdom of voting for him.
However, he is probably the most progressive Republican out there right now, and stands to the left of several of our senators.

21. Not arguing with any of you. |

All I'm saying is that Arnold, as unfortunate as he is, is moderate by Republican standards. He is pro-choice. He is fiscally conservative. Those are two distinguishing characteristics of Democrats, some of whom have jettisoned for Republican-lite territory.
Of course, his being a misogynistic, bait and switch, double-talking, Bush-supporting, numbnuts displays defining Republican traits that Arnold shares in.

9. Never. His proposals in the State of the State are terrible! |
|
Edited on Sat Jan-08-05 02:13 PM by Liberty Belle
You need to educate yourself about what his proposals really mean-- gutting public education, harming the poor and retirees, gerrymandering CA to create more Republican Congressional and Legislative districts, to name just a few.'
Check out these sites: www.arnoldwatch.org www.standingupforcalifornia.com (or .org, I forget which)

I didn't interpret his speech as such and I'm certainly not convinced that he'd be an ideal president. Using his name in the headline was mainly to get attention. I truly think we need a plan B if we can't get the election process cleaned up.

I am sorry that a "long-time dem" is so incredibly fucking ignorant of our governmental processes.
The constitution would have to be amended. Which is NOT "legislation."
Now go look it up.

Sorry, but I think you're lying. Democrats don't vote for the likes of Herr Gropenator.
> and were both surprised and impressed by his state of the state address.
The address I heard was hardly impressive. The only surprising thing about it was that there weren't screams of "Sieg Heil!"
> He’s light years away from the current administration and seems to be an honorable man.
No, he's a trojan horse. He's dismantling the social support structure of California as fast as he can. Intellectually, he's an empty suit. And honorable men don't conspire with Kenneth Lay to rip off Californians, or think of women as mere sex objects to be fondled and otherwise abused.

That's the best thing about him.
That's not good enough for me, though.
In general I don't think children should be blamed for the sins of their parents, but I'm going to make an exception for Arnold. I don't think we can have the son of a Nazi as our president. And no offense to body builders, but having a president whose claim to fame was body building is just embarrassing. If he were a brilliant politician, great humanitarian, and a genius, it would be different. Frankly, he's never seemed like much more than a body builder to me.
I hate the way having a famous name suddenly qualifies you for everything in this country. What, you're an internationally famous model? Here's a record deal, a children's book contract, a part in a sitcom, your own cooking show, and aren't you running for senator? :eyes:

unless we had a terrible candidate. However, if the law were to be changed (and that is a huge IF), and if he were to win, I would not be totally miserable and would not hate him. I, too, sometimes wonder what he's doing in the Republican party.

That's the same response I had to the people some months ago who suggested John McCain (another repuke) as Kerry's running mate.
The Democratic party for which I have voted these many years is NOT repuke lite.

I am 100% convinced that if a pro life candidate runs on the REPUG ticket, that the Radical Clerics will run their own candidate from their own party. This would split off 25% + of the Repug vote, and in doing so will insure Demo victory. Even a schlub like Kerry could win.
I'm thinking of starting a Robertson 08 campaign soon.

in sheeps clothing--the same people who brought us BushCo brought us Bush-Light--do you think that recall campaign in California was put into place because "the people" wanted a change "regardless of the outcome" No Fixers I don't know what else to call them) wanted their man--Schwatz--And what is Schwartz going to do first? Redraw all the congressional districts to get the Democrat's out of state politics--if he can't do it through the legislature (good bet) he will "do it through the people"--another referendum
Wonder what kind of machines they will be using
These guys wouldn't have gone through all that trouble with Davis if they didn't know for sure the fix was in--too expensive and risky to leave it up to the voters--better to take care of it off the books
I don't know but I think the sainted Warren Buffett is tied up in all this too--his name comes up too often--and I know his fund was losing money in the late 90s--
Just speculation
