Still wondering about the MSM "Lockdown"?
Edited on Sun Jan-09-05 03:23 PM by FULL_METAL_HAT
On edit, before the bit, I'd like to ask you to include in your repsonses whether today's "Coverage Vacuum" doesn't really indicate a complicity, or if this is truly an indicator that the Corporate-Run-Media is saying they will not report news anymore?? moreso than "what we can do" about it... Having full faith they _are_ is the first important step, after that comes stratergerization!

Rather than go to church, I watched the Sunday morning News Discussion shows. They included xNBC's "The Chris Matthews Show" (starring "That Guy From Hardball" as "a less shouty, more sunday-go-to-meeting man"), CBS' "Moon Face The Nation", and "Meet the Press", with Tim "Bills vs. Bush? Bill's get the mandate!" Russert.

"Meet the Press", currently in their 58th year, is the longest running program on network television, which I presume means ALL television, cable, satellite, telegraph, etc., perhaps even in the whole world.

From: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3403008/
Every Sunday morning for 57 years strong, in times of peace or war, "Meet the Press" is welcomed into the homes of Americans to analyze, discuss and review the news of the week -- and to look ahead to the week to come -- with world-renowned guests.

We are proud to be the highest rated, most watched and most quoted Sunday morning public affairs program. An average audience of 5 million viewers join us each week to share in a national dialogue about the important issues of our time.

In my recollection, since November 2, 2004, there has been no mention on MTP about the election irregularities, the Ohio recount, or anything. If there was, I missed it.

But today's MTP (transcript here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6805000/) did not mention that little thing that happened on Thursday at all.

The pressure to keep Tim from this actual real story about "America" must be OVERWHELMING. The historic aspect of this alone could tug Tim away from the a Bill's game (well, maybe pre-season;)), and yet the ramifications of all this had Tim and his guests almost "talking around" the congressional objection.

It's one thing for MTP/Russert to cave in to the arugment that there was no "real news stories" about events during the previous two months, but today makes me think there really-really-really _is_ some kind of serious pressure on any MSM to "not bring it up at all"

I would hazard a guess that of all MSMers Tim Russert must really be secretly ashamed of himself for the forced complicity he is adhering to.

The only thing WORSE I can imagine is if we'd be hearing the same silence today if, on Thursday, somehow the challenge PASSED!

So is this confirmation that the MSM is beyond the pale in an obvious absence of any notification (might as well call it as it actually is, considering all they really do is notify us of a new WH press-release) and can we finally call their coverage an "Election Vacuum" or maybe even an "Election Blackhole"?

It's one thing for pinko-commie-internets-loving-nigbloggers and hepped-out-frothing-at-the-mount-partisan-soreloser-lawyers to get ignored... but the freaking CONGRESS being ignored??

I Believe!! -- that I am very scared... :(

I shudda gone to church,

Al Gore's INdTV: The People's Programmer

By Richard Leiby
Tuesday, January 4, 2005; Page C03

Tuning in to Gore TV: Little is publicly known about the cable news network planned by almost-president Al Gore except that it will be called INdTV (say it like "indie"), aims to wow the youth market, has set up shop in San Francisco and is supposed to launch this year. But what kind of shows will it carry?

We've received a glimpse of some of the programming envisioned by INdTV execs, who just sent out an e-mail to prospective "digital correspondents," seeking edgy video submissions to serve as pilots. Gore's programming gurus say they hope to "democratize television" by relying on Generation Y contributors and "real-life video." An insider cautioned us yesterday that the e-mail represents just a sliver of the conceptual pie, but the potential must-see lineup includes:

35. I've always called them the corporate media
There's nothing "mainstream" about the narrow corporate interests that they serve.

I think that "mainstream" is a bit of a misnomer since it implies populism. This is a term that the RW media coined themselves to help them frame the debate. Their radical ideology will never be "mainstream" no matter how much of the public airwaves they control.

To me they will always be the corporate media.

From: http://www.disinfopedia.org/wiki.phtml?title=Total_Information_Awareness

The Information Awareness Office is a branch of the Department of Defense's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency whose mission is to "imagine, develop, apply, integrate, demonstrate and transition information technologies, components and prototype, closed-loop, information systems that will counter asymmetric threats by achieving total information awareness." The IAO is headed by John Poindexter, former National Security Advisor in the Reagan Administration and chief architect of the Iran-Contra Affair.

Their logo is very pretty with that charming all-seeing-eye:

If you're not a jogger, I'm not sure what it means! ;)

10. If blame is to be ascribed ........
If there is one single entity that can take credit for allowing Fuckface and his White House Squatters to take over as they have and to behave with the unbelievable impunity and sense of entitlement they've exhibited, it is the mainstream media.

I just read that the Washington Post donated $100,000 to Fuckface's Inaugural fund. Can anyone possibly find that proper or ethical? A newspaper donating even one lousy cent to the inauguration of any President? I find it repugnant and just another example of how the M$M has completely abdicated its role in the maintenance of our Republic.

I'm old enough to remember when two reporters for the Post - Woodward and Bernstein - got the backing of their ballsy editor, Ben Bradlee, and their even ballsier publisher, Katharine Graham - to go after the President of the United States. I remember when those same executives made the decision to print the Pentagon Papers.

I remember when newspapers didn't kiss poliical ass the way they do now.

When the revolution comes, I hope I'm around to see a new generation of brave, honest, truthful reporters take it all away from these sycophants who don't have the integrity or spine to tell everything to the American people.

55. My letter to the Washed-Up Post, when they drank the Blackwell kool-aid
regarding the "recount":

To the editor:

Your recent AP article implies that a recount just occurred in Ohio to determine who won the Presidential race in that state. Nothing could be further from the truth. In a seriously compromised recount, there appears to be not even one OH county that recounted according to the law. Ohio law states that recounts should proceed as follows:

1) Precincts should be chosen randomly (and not ahead of time) to prevent any hanky-panky
2) Tampering with (or even access to) the voting machines ahead of the recount should not be allowed
3) The entire votes in the counties should be recounted by hand when the machine tallies differ from hand count tallies by even one vote in the recount
4) Access to poll books should be freely allowed and not restricted in any way
5) Recount watchers should be allowed in the same rooms as the recounters, allowed to ask pertinent questions, etc.
6) Computer techs who were found to be tampering with the vote counting machines should be allowed to be questioned fully, without those questions being cut off by suddenly-in-a-hurry Republican local election officials
7) Voting machines should be available for inspection by qualified computer techs to ascertain the source codes, computer logs, communications with external sources and other evidence of tampering.

No Ohio county followed the Ohio laws that govern recounts. Thus, the Ohio recount was as much a charade as the original "reported" vote in Ohio. And now Ohio's Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell is seeking protection from being required to testify under oath regarding what he knew, and when he knew it, regarding the election theft in Ohio and the rest of the country.

Folks, this isn't a "third rate" burglary -- it is a violent gang-rape of our democratic process. Where are our Woodwards and Bernsteins -- our Washington Post -- when we really need them?

Most assuredly,

Me

We have to get our information the old fashioned way now. We have to read it not see it.

We still subscribe to the Post, but mostly out of habit. It's our local paper, so to speak, and I like the Wednesday Food section.

But, for news, first there's the BBC, and, after that, a lot of wonderful alternatives - none of them major media outlets based in the US.

Their address is mtp@nbc.com

How could you have had an entire show and not had one word about the historic proceedings in Congress on January 6, 2004?
All you did was provide a convenient photo-op for Bill "make sure you get some devastation in that shot" Frist.
This was only the second time in the history of this country that there was an offical objection to the electoral vote count. There were alegations of massive voting irregularities in Ohio. For you not to have mentioned it at all is not just an embarrassment, it is a disgusting oversight.
You have no business calling yourself a journalist.

52. I wrote them this morning, too.
Here's my email:

Dear Mr. Russert,

As a long time viewer of Meet the Press, I have always found your program to be enjoyable, but more importantly, educational. I always learn about issues important to the American people by watching your show. (Since I am also a teacher, the educational part has always been important.) As a John Kerry Democrat in 2004, I have been very concerned about the direction of our country. After the 2000 election, I decided to take action on my concern by working to elect a Democratic administration. After 2004, I’ve decided to take action by writing to media organizations, in the hope that someone there is listening and will endeavor to educate the public on issues of concern.

After watching Meet the Press today, I have two issues of concern: 1) Media Responsibility, and 2) Social Security.

1. Media Responsibility- While I was glad to see your round table discussion on Armstrong Williams and NCLB, and the way in which the media manipulates the public, you only touched the tip of the iceberg. I think it is true that the public, in general, may have difficulty knowing who is truly a journalist, who is a pundit, who is entertainment, etc. However, you missed the fundamental point that paying for this media coverage to Armstrong Jones is probably illegal. If, as Al Hunt states, there are more instances of this, why doesn’t the media have some responsibility to talk about that angle of the story? It’s not just about you (the media). Taxpayer dollars are being used to manipulate public opinion. You have GREAT responsibility to cover that story, if you are the “journalists” you profess to be. You also have a critical responsibility to choose important stories to cover within your allotted time on air. C-Span covered the Electoral College Vote on January 6th, and to NBC News’ credit, you did mention it on Nightly News. These are the kind of stories I, and the American public need to be educated about if we are to make intelligent, educated choices when we go to the polls to vote, whether it’s for president, governor, mayor or dog catcher.

2. Social Security - Since it appears that the Bush Administration intends to privatize Social Security, I hope the media will fulfill its responsibility to educate the American people on this issue IN DEPTH. There are several points which I almost never hear made: First, that during the Clinton Administration, because of the surplus gained through his economic policies, this problem had been temporarily solved for our generation. It is only due to the incompetence ( or purposefulness ) of this administration that this issue is on the table at this time. Second, Social Security was developed to be an INSURANCE program, or safety net, not a retirement program. All discussion on your program, and most others, has been about how private accounts will provide a better retirement for seniors. My dad, had a massive heart attack at age 43, Social Security was there to help him and my mother keep their house and afford food when he could not work. I have a high school friend whose husband died in 1987, leaving her with three small children to support and no insurance, job, or income to buy food or pay the house payment, Social Security helped to tide her over, so she could go back to school, get a job, keep her house and care for her children. It was unbelievably difficult, but without Social Security, it would have been impossible. Her oldest son is now in the Air Force, the middle one is in college and her youngest graduates from high school this June. It is true, that Social Security is partly a retirement program, as a safety net, for the elderly. It was developed to that the elderly would not starve. I have two grown daughters. If they need this safety net, I want Social Security to be there for them.
I know that mine is only one opinion. My hope is that enough of your viewing audience is concerned, as I am, with the direction of our country and will speak up to help make our collective voice heard. It is clear to me, that we are not being heard now. If you have, in fact, read this email, I thank you for your time from the bottom of my heart! (smile)

Sincerely,
XXXXXXXXX

18. Question: Does an event happen even if the media doesn't cover it?
The answer is obviously yes and we need to get things straight in the blogsphere. I've posted pics and a little narrative on the march but would like to see some real narrative coverage of the two rally's and march + senate debate on the independent media (if there is something, post a link). Screw the WaPOST, NYT, and all the rest. I was so pissed on 1/7/05 when I went to buy a Post for the first time in years. No front page coverage. Can you believe it?

The media whores think the answer to the above question is no. Well, they're dwindling in audience now. This is just one more reason to expect them to dwindle more.

SCREW THE SYSTEM

23. Video/documentaries...
THE CIA AND THE MEDIA
"Some of these journalists’ relationships with the Agency were tacit; some were explicit. There was cooperation, accommodation and overlap. Journalists provided a full range of clandestine services — from simple intelligence- gathering to serving as go-betweens with spies in Communist countries. Reporters shared their notebooks with the CIA. Editors shared their staffs. Some of the journalists were Pulitzer Prize winners, distinguished reporters who considered themselves ambassadors-without-portfolio for their country. Most were less exalted: foreign correspondents who found that their association with the Agency helped their work; stringers and freelancers who were as interested it the derring-do of the spy business as in filing articles, and, the smallest category, full-time CIA employees masquerading as journalists abroad. In many instances, CIA documents show, journalists were engaged to perform tasks for the CIA with the consent of the managements America’s leading news organizations.

The history of the CIA’s involvement with the American press continues to be shrouded by an official policy of obfuscation and deception . . . . - Carl Bernstein, 1977

The Times reported that over the last twenty years, the CIA owned or subsidized more than fifty newspapers, news services, radio stations, periodicals and other communications facilities, most of them overseas. These were used for propaganda efforts, or even as cover for operations. Another dozen foreign news organizations were infiltrated by paid CIA agents. At least 22 American news organizations had employed American journalists who were also working for the CIA, and nearly a dozen American publishing houses printed some of the more than 1,000 books that had been produced or subsidized by the CIA. When asked in a 1976 interview whether the CIA had ever told its media agents what to write, William Colby replied, "Oh, sure, all the time."

The Myth of the Liberal Media
The Propaganda Model of News
Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky demolish one of the central tenets of our political culture, the idea of the "liberal media." Instead, utilizing a systematic model based on massive empirical research, they reveal the manner in which the news media are so subordinated to corporate and conservative interests that their function can only be described as that of "elite propaganda."

"Spin"
Brian Springer
Video, 1995, (60 min.)

Using the 1992 presidential election as his springboard, documentary filmmaker Brian Springer captures the behind-the-scenes maneuverings of politicians and newscasters in the early 1990s. Pat Robertson banters about "homos," Al Gore learns how to avoid abortion questions, George Bush talks to Larry King about halcyon -- all presuming they're off camera. Composed of 100% unauthorized satellite footage, Spin is a surreal expose of media-constructed reality.

25. Picking up on what OLL said (#14), a concerted action by a
significant number of people WORKS.

The NYTs was forced to do a semi-apologetic mass mailing to all of us who were on their case for not covering "Ohio". Because we had numbers.

Now, if we got everyone we know to call/email CNN and tell them we're switching to MSNBC (okay, don't gag) because KO covered the story and they did not, THEN we might get somewhere.

has any TV network carried even a single word about John Kerry being in the Middle East on a fact-gathering/diplomatic tour? I'd really be interested in knowing that. On TV, it seems as though John Kerry has dropped down a memory hole!

41. Bushco claimed openly "we create reality"
Stop kicking yourselves Duers YOU are not the tin foil hat conspirators but frankly I wonder how ANY thinking person could still believe the U.S. corporate media has ANY interest in reporting the TRUTH.

1) Does anyone with a brain believe the 19 hijacker theory for 911?
Silence from the MSM.

2) Has the MSM ever covered what happened to Gore's 16,600 votes that "disappeared" in Volusia County? Or the the fact that Florida broke its own laws in 2004 by purging African American voters even though the review after 2000 proved they were fully qualified to vote.

3) Have they plumbed the story on the "NIGER uranium" or who outed a CIA operative, an act of treason?

4) Investigated who was involved in Cheney's secret meetings on energy policy while California was being bilked for $6 billion by Kenny boy?

5) Reported that U.S, soldiers are so spooked and overextended they are shooting innocent Iraqis including women and children on sight?

6) Explained why the exit polls THEY THEMSELVES were using on election night turned out to be skewed or why they reported erroneously that MORAL VALUES was the overriding issue?

The MSM ARE the problem. That's why your work here is so invaluable.

GOOD NEWS: we're still not as bad off as CHINA. NGU!

48. We might try encouraging wealthy progessives like Soros
to start a liberal network. But corporations should NOT be allowed to fund candidates, period. That should be our #1 issue and it could woo a lot of independents. Either way it's a hard road to hoe but in the meantime each one of us should be spreading the information on the Internet far and wide.

47. I think it will unlock soon; the evidence of fraud and dirty tricks is to
too strong- they can't ignore or deny it.

There was widespread and systematic voter suppression of minority voters, dirty tricks, vote machine fraud, dirty tricks and other vote manipulation in Ohio, New Mexico, and Florida- that was of magnitude enough to call in question who won those states.

etc.

and also similar patterns in other states where the suppression and fraud did not change the election results including vote machine fraud in Calif., Pennsylvania, Washington, Texas, etc.

http://www.flcv.com/snohomis.html
http://www.flcv.com/mercerco.html

etc.

(the voter suppression of minorities in Mercer County is the worst I've ever seen-followup needed)

The unethical and illegal actions were so systematic and widespread that this cannot be allowed to continue uninvestigated and unpunished. There was a huge amount of obvious malfeasance and dirty tricks that should be investigated and dealt with

49. as we speak
NBC just aired a 3-minute gift to the automotive industry on the nightly news. They discussed the 20-30 new "concept cars." Never mind that profits are down for both domestic and import manufacturers, they're continuing on the same moronic path: now we have a Hummer whose wheels go inward so it can spin on its own axis. Don't ask me what purpose this would serve.

Oh and 440 horsepower vehicles. And The Charger is back, only with four doors. Yes, we are going back in time.

Twenty years ago this would NEVER have appeared on the evening news. Now the evening news is nothing more than the weekly free advertising rag.

50. Imo, it has to do with protecting their source of huge profits rolling in.
It revolves around their defense contracts. I haven't seen an updated list, but last year I saw one that had General Electric on the top of the list of having gained huge profits from defense contracts. At the expense of young men & women fighting their wars, including the lives of innocent Iraqi families, war is making them richer & richer.

Exposing the corporate media to the naive tv viewing audience should be as top priority as election reform.

54. Dean Takes on Big Media
http://www.commondreams.org/views03/1219-12.htm

Matthews: There are so many things that have been deregulated. Is that a wrong trend and would you reverse it?

Dean: I would reverse it in some areas. First of all, eleven companies in this country control ninety percent of what ordinary people are able to read and watch on their television. That's wrong. We need to have a wide variety of opinions in every community. We don't have that because of Michael Powell and what George Bush has tried to do the FCC.

Matthews: As a public policy, would you bring industrial policy to bear and break up these conglomerations of power?...How about large media enterprises?

Dean: The answer to that is yes. I would say there is too much penetration by single corporations in media markets all over this country. We need locally-owned radio stations. There are only two or three radio stations left in the state of Vermont where you can get local news anymore. The rest of it is read and ripped from the AP.

56. Good news on the music/radio front tho.
Edited on Mon Jan-10-05 12:56 AM by HR_Pufnstuf
These two stocks, XMSR and SIRI, are shining stars to some extent, if they dont limit content, and survive. I've never seen an industry (conventional radio) put out anti-technology (anti-satellite) commercials like you hear on their supposed "local" radio stations.

At least with SIRI, XMSR, internet, it wont be as easy for the 4 labels to shove "their" artists down America's throat.

And way harder worldwide. Radio/Labels are nervous. Good. Time to usher in the new economy whether they like it or not.
