Cuyahoga County runs short of its ballots for Republicans

Wednesday, March 08, 2000

Scores of Republican voters were turned away from the polls yesterday in at least five Cuyahoga County communities after elections officials drastically underestimated the demand for crossover ballots and ran out of them.

By the time the polls closed, the number of voters who declared themselves Republicans jumped from the 77,745 to an estimated 150,000.

That unprecedented crossover in the primary sent Cuyahoga County election officials scrambling as polling places ran low on ballots as early as midmorning.

An angry Ohio Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell blamed the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections for the polling-place problems.

4. How strange that a more extreme situation this time
didn't prompt an even stronger reaction - evidence of bias?
