Conyers Staff asked me to post this Thank You to DU'ers
AN OPEN LETTER FROM JOHN CONYERS, JR.

January 10, 2004

Dear Friend:

I want to thank you for the time and energy you have already given to help me in my pursuit of the truth about the 2004 Presidential election, particularly the truth about what happened in Ohio. I also want to let you know what I will be working on in the coming months.

I believe what we achieved on January 6 will be a seminal event in the history of progressive politics, and significantly advance the cause of electoral reform. For this challenge to Ohio’s electors to have occurred, I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the internet activists, who spread the story of my efforts and supported me in every way possible. I am also thankful to the alternative media, including talk radio and blogs that gave substantial attention and investigation to these matters when all but a handful in the mainstream media refused to examine the facts. I cannot thank all of you personally, but you know who you are.

With the exigency of January 6 behind us, I wanted to let you know what I will be doing in the coming months. First, my investigation of Ohio voting irregularities is not over. In an effort to get as much information confirmed and circulated in advance of January 6, many valuable leads still need to be pursued and I pledge to do so. Substantial irregularities have come to light in other states during the course of this investigation and I will also pursue those leads. While there has been powerful opposition to my efforts and personal attacks against me as a result of my efforts, I want to assure you I remain steadfast.

Second, there are other matters involving wrongdoing by Administration officials that I will continue to pursue. Among other things, I will continue to seek answers about the role of senior Bush Administration officials in outing an undercover Central Intelligence Agency operative. I will also continue to examine the sources of the fraudulent case for the Iraq war, which intersects with the outing of this operative.

Third, I intend to develop and introduce legislation in a number of areas. Most importantly, I intend to introduce comprehensive election reform legislation in the coming weeks, and I will fight for its passage at the earliest possible moment. I intend to hold further hearings on this issue. I will also continue to fight the job loss and the loss of retirement security that has so negatively impacted working families in my district, and I will fight the economic policies of this Administration that are the cause of these serious problems. Finally, the Judiciary Committee will also be at the center of the efforts to oversee the U.S.A. Patriot Act and ascertain which, if any, provisions should be renewed. I expect to lead the fight against a number of provisions that I believe compromise our civil liberties.

Again, thank you for all you have done. I look forward to working with you on these and other important matters in the weeks and months ahead.

Sincerely,

John Conyers, Jr.

In the email I got from his staffer, this letter was attached and we (PDA) were told it went on www.johnconyers.com as well. But in the email note the staffer stated:

"It has a thanks that is intended for you guys and the folks at DU. Can you guys make sure DU'ers see it."

Let it be known.. the activism in here was recognized and commended by Conyers himself. Them mentioned DU activists directly in the email!

Congrats and THANK YOU ALL!

36. Thanks for passing this along.
I, and several other DUers, have nominated him for a Michiganian of the Year award from The Detroit News. For anyone else who missed my earlier threads and may be interested, especially if you live in Michigan, here's the info:

Write a short letter explaining why John Conyers should be considered for this award. Include your name and telephone number and address your letter to 2004 Michiganians, Features, The Detroit News, 615 W. Lafayette Blvd., Detroit, MI 48226. Or, you cal fax submissions to (313) 222-2451 or e-mail them to features@detnews.com.

He's a brave, patriotic man, and I thank him to the bottom of my heart for pursuing this and getting it done.

38. Dear Rep. Conyers: Praise here for you from an unexpected
quarter--yes, I voted for Bush in 2000. Then certain things happened which have irrevocably turned me away from the republican party forever:

1. Bush's fraudulent invasion of Iraq.
2. Behavior of Bush and his minions regarding Iraq caused me to question the real motives of our Afghanistan invasion, which I had previously supported. Among other Iraq questions: the Plame affair, which you mentioned in your letter. Please keep on it!
3. Research regarding the above caused me to realize that while it is a tragedy that 3000 innocent Americans died, the Official Story of 9/11 is a FRAUD.
4. I turned to John Kerry and wholeheartedly supported him for president in 2004.
5. YOU, Rep. Conyers, have been a steady, intelligent, strong beacon of hope to all of us who realize that Bush should NEVER have become president.

THANK YOU! I will always support you!

I commend your post to Mr. Conyers' letter. I have to say that in all candor, I am shocked to read a former Bush supporter state that he disbelieves the official explanation of 9/11. Good for you! As you can imagine, the truth is on the Internet if you know where to look. If you haven't seen the following site already, check it out:

71. Thanks--will check it out. Questions about 9/11 are NOT
just for "conspiracy theorists" or even "coincidence theorists", nor are they just for "tin foil hatters". There are many people, especially on internet forums, who are interested in politics. But they tend to (voluntarily) form themselves into sub-groups. For example, on here, there are those who are the movers, the ones who want to get on to the next political race, who love to judge which candidate might be the most saleable, etc. Fine. I admire those people's knowledge. Then, there are the people who are dedicated to a certain issue or issues--for example, there are the people who really feel that conservation is THE issue. Or maybe they are most into preserving the civil rights of underprivileged people. Etc.

So when these people in the other sub-groups are confronted with info on 9/11, they tend to think, "Oh, well, yeah, it's probably bogus, but my time is better used dedicating myself to improving things from here on out... I don't want to get in a rut, examining the past."

Furthermore, liberals may be put off by the fact that there is also a large group of conservatives and libertarians who are VERY suspicious of the 9/11 story. A few of the right-wingers in that group tend to actually have experience from possibly working in the military, where they may have gotten a ringside seat to observe how the CIA and other spy agencies function. Those seem to be the people who are MOST suspicious.

What all liberals and other democrats need to understand is that BELIEF IN THE OFFICIAL (BUSH ADMIN.) STORY OF 9/11 IS THE BEDROCK OF SUPPORT FOR BUSH. Look at the loony, Kool-aid drinker type of Bush supporters. It seems nothing can shake their belief in Bush... BUT if those people were ever made to realize that they have been had by the administration, that they have been sold a complete bill of goods, that 9/11 was really what the neocons, in their Project for a New American Century (Cheney is one of that group), call "a new Pearl Harbor"... if those people could be made to realize that, ALL remaining support for Bush would finally crumble. That's the main reason I'm so interested in finding out more about the incredibly shaky official story of 9/11. Without a belief in 9/11, POLITICALLY, BUSH IS LITERALLY NOTHING.

Thank you for heeding the call to serve your country when to truly do so these days is all too easily construed as its opposite. You have acquitted yourself admirably.

Yes, the sixth of January 2004 was scarcely noted by the mainstream opinion-makers, but that does not begin to dent its significance nor its historicity. Like the Gettysburg address, January 6, 2004 will eventually be memorialized as a seminal moment in our blood fight to reclaim our democracy.

The Democratic Party proved itself to be the party of statesmen. Conversely, the majority party revealed itself to be intellectually and morally bankrupt and perhaps the most insidious threat our constitutional form of government has ever faced.

To paraphrase the Morgan Freeman character in the movie "Glory," the time is ripe to "ante up and kick in like men." I am more than proud to join you in this most honorable struggle. Indeed, we have just begun to fight.

53. He was a true drum major for justice!

He had plenty of guts and he deserves to share the glory with Boxer, Tubbs - Jones, Jesse Jackson and those that spoke TRUTH to POWER.

Rarely in American politics have so few gone up against such power. It just proves that the TRUTH shall set you FREE.

We will all be FREE of this regime someday.

How long? Not long we pray.

Conyers, a real patriot and a gentleman.

Stay safe my brother, stay safe.

That's what keeps a movement going. A little feedback from one part...then another. Kind of like a caterpillar crawling along...slowly but surely...needing the 'coordination' of its many legs to get there.

For this, we will be eternally grateful. We will support you as you continue to fight for the issues of grave importance to the American people.

To all of the members of Congress that stood on Jan 6th and spoke for the rights of American citizens to be able to vote and trust that their vote was counted accurately, you are real American Heroes. I pledge my support to you.

To the on line community. You are behind one of the greatest grassroots movements in history. Look at what we accomplished in only two months. We are just getting started. My fellow patriots, Here's to good fight. :toast:

110. Congressman Conyers is a great example.
And we can never thank him enough for taking a stand when many wouldn't or couldn't.

For that he, and all who signed on, deserve our support against the coming attacks. Let's not forget the Max Cleland (sp?) example.

We need to elect more Dems who are willing to go to the wall for us at all levels. I, for one will be more active at the grassroots level.

I wish I could say Congressman Conyers is my Rep but, alas, I'm stuck with Rethug foot soldier who's in lock step with *. Nonetheless, he will hear from me early and often. I wouldn't want him to wonder what my positions are.

I believe all the calls, letters, and e-mails in this effort demonstrated to both sides that we will mobilize. I hope we keep it up.

Thank you again Congressman for leading the charge. We're here for you.

I am encouraged by Rep. Conyers commitment to electoral reform. Pleased as well with his stated intent to continue pursuing the traitors who "outed" Victoria Plame as a CIA operative and remain shielded by this illegitimate and lawless administration.

138. I think our democracy is hanging by the thinnest of thread, so I'm not...
...going to mince words.

I have nothing but praise for John Conyers. He stood with the voters when no other elected official would do so, long before Jan. 6. I have immense respect for him for that. He is truly one of the greatest patriots and greatest people in the land.

BUT...I am very wary of any national solution to this fraudulent election system, at this time--mainly because BushCons put this fraudulent system in place and quite deliberately prevented any transparency or controls on it, so I have no trust that they will do anything but further damage to our right to vote (for instance, by taking away state control over election rules, so that, when they fail to act, we won't be able to fix this problem locally either).

Do you think the BushCons are going to give us back our right to vote? Do you think they have any shame, any sense of decency, that could be appealed to?

Well, if you do, you haven't been paying attention.

I'm also wary of a national solution ("national standards" or whatever) because the Democrats for the most part sat back and did little or nothing, and said little or nothing, while the BushCons put this fraud in place, thus depriving them of any hope of winning a national election again--given the BushCon voting machine companies' total control of most parts of our voting system.

And we're supposed to trust the Democrats NOW, to fix this--who were either oblivious, or corrupt or suicidal before?

I've no doubt whatever that John Conyers is sincere. And there ARE some problems that are not related to electronic voting. (--although I think Ohioans and Floridians and New Mexicans have a better chance of solving THOSE problems locally than we have of changing Congress for the better, without the right to vote.)

How do you solve the problem of partisan election officials (i.e., Blackwell & Co.)?

It would be a lot EASIER to solve if they hadn't gotten away with it! And Conyers keeping the heat on will help.

The problem I see is that, as you impose federal requirements (such as non-partisan SoS), you take away states' rights to determine such things for themselves--and therein lies one of the poison pills that this Congressional legislation could contain. (Removal of potential people power over local rules.)

Another is YET MORE MONEY to these treasonous, criminal, lying S.O.B.'s who stole this election on Bush's behalf--the electronic companies themselves. Big industry. Lots and lots and lots of money involved. If they have any part of this legislation, they will corrupt it for sure.

Are Democrats immune to that corruption? I don't think so. In fact, I suspect that simple money corruption (HAVA money to the states, and Diebold's infamous wining and dining) may have played a part in the Democrats NEAR SILENCE on BushCons owning and controlling this ridiculously fraud-prone voting system.

I suspect corruption at the state level, too--(but, when lame and mysterious corruption charges re HAVA money surfaced against CA SoS Kevin Shelley during this campaign--he wasn't running, just in charge of the election--and Shelley being one of the few SoS's in the country who took on Diebold--I immediately suspected Karl Rove "black ops," and I think we have to be so careful about stuff like this, because of the poisonous political atmosphere that BushCons create just by breathing in the same room with other people). (I DO think it was "black ops" possibly related to the potential of Shelley to cry foul on election fraud, or on some other election stealing move, such as phony terrorist alert to shut down L.A. freeways on election day.)

Anyway, there may well BE corruption re: HAVA that makes Democrats vulnerable, and blackmailable. You may have noticed that one of the points made by a Jan. 6 speaker is that HAVA was "underfunded." They mandated things; and didn't fund it sufficiently.

Well, you think BushCons are NOW going to provide funding, say, for security measures like a paper trail, and an auditable source code, to improve an election system that has given them all the power in DC without having to earn the votes for such power?

They might slush up extra money for the BushCon donors who own the companies. And what we'll end up with is MORE electronics, and LESS security (that part will be "underfunded"--again).

The reality now is that, if states want their election system funded, they MUST go electronic. That's another poison pill. Money itself and its evil influence. (Shelley last summer issued a rule permitting the option of a paper ballot--I don't know who funds that, state or feds--but I suspect it's NOT provided for in HAVA.) (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

Think about this: Say, Congress (infinitely changed, infinitely wise) concludes (as they should) that electronics are nowhere near ready as a voting system, and, to clean it all up, we have to go back to paper ballots.

And why, pray are you laughing? Why do you think this is impossible? Because the paper mills and printing presses would be negligible in cost (and payoff), compared to all that fancy, new, and highly expensive, and constantly in need of "service" electronic equipment, the money for which pours into the pockets of Bush "Pioneers" (who then donate to Bush--nice loop there!).

It's mostly a money thing. It's not about our right to vote any more.

DC is very far away. These things often happen before anybody knows about it--especially with BushCons in charge.

State capitols and counties are closer--to keep tabs on things. Closer to the people. Easier to monitor and influence. Even stinko places like Ohio.

One last word, as a veteran of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights movement in the south in the 1960s, I FULLY understand Jesse Jackson's and Conyer's impulse to ask for federal protection. But have they really thought this through--or is that a reflex from former days? Alberto Gonzalez is going to protect Ohioans from Kenneth Blackwell? And Bush is going to call out the National Guard to insure black voting rights, say, in Florida? It's laughable.

So what good is a federal law--except to add to the delusion that we have a democracy?

Maybe court cases, I guess--if you can find a fair judge (few and far between these days).

And, even if you found a fair judge, what good is a right to vote after the election is over?

Federal protection was a real thing in the '60s when we had a government. It may not have been altogether sincere, but it had sufficient truth to be a deterrent. People who stopped blacks from voting--or harmed anyone in connection with voting rights--were going to be prosecuted in federal court and sent to jail. We don't have that now. We don't have a government. We have a junta. (We have federal laws NOW that Bush's designees in Ohio, Florida, and New Mexico defiantly BROKE!)

I'm just asking. I'm concerned. I'm worried that our only avenue of change may be cut off. And I'm worried about what ELSE Congress (controlled by BushCons) might do, that I haven't even thought of.

One thing that was very clear on Jan. 6 was how little power Democrats have in Congress. If tomorrow, the BushCons write up a law that requires 100% paperless electronic voting all over the country, and specifiying Bush "Pioneers" as the only receipient of federal funds for this purpose (i.e., a Halliburton no-bidder), what power do we have, or do the Democrats have, to stop it? Really--we don't have the votes, and they couldn't care less what we or anybody thinks?

The Supreme Court invoking the Constitution on the states' behalf?

Uh-huh.

So I say, don't be lulled by ANYONE's promises--not even Conyers'--and get this done (paper ballots, hand counts--or whatever solution people think best) NOW, while we still have the power.

Then, a year from now, we start taking back Congress.

139. "First, my investigation of Ohio voting irregularities is not over. "
continues...

"In an effort to get as much information confirmed and circulated in advance of January 6, many valuable leads still need to be pursued and I pledge to do so. Substantial irregularities have come to light in other states during the course of this investigation and I will also pursue those leads. While there has been powerful opposition to my efforts and personal attacks against me as a result of my efforts, I want to assure you I remain steadfast."
