34. My thoughts on OBL
is that he likes bush in office because he makes our country look bad, so when OBL did his little pitch for Who to vote for, before the elections, he really wanted Bush.He hates the US and I think he likes how Bush makes us look like a bunch of Dopes.

as far as the origian Post :He better damn well have protection,he needs more than any other person in history!

Clinton didn't need an army to protect him from his own people...because people LIKED him.

I have a feeling 1/20 is going to get very very ugly.

I was thinking of bringing my daughter and attending the party afterwards but now I'm having second thoughts - about bringing my daughter. (I was in the military for twenty years and am not afraid of getting shot at, but I did it so my children wouldn't have to. I guess that plan went out the window when B*sh started the war.)

I guess I should pack my Kevlar vest and leave the kids at home.

20. It wasn't bad at all ....
Remember, there were over one half million of us...
And the streets were closed for miles.

My experience was that the police were really on our side. (of course, they were New Yorkers too, so...)

I know there were over 300 arrests that day, but by everyone I spoke with, and by my experience, it was a peaceful day.

It got a little rough out there. The people in Times Sq. who were rounded up in nets. Critical Mass. Guantanamo on the Hudson. Did you see the security entrance on 9th Avenue to approach MSG? It looked like the Berlin wall checkpoint.

was more difficult.

I wanted to go to the candle protest ar MSG the last night of the RNC, and I couldn't navigate my way around
all the police baricades.

But I thought the main protest was fantastic....And the fact that many of the streets were obstructed the following days would have absolutely no influence on my participation in future protests.

horrible.
It should not have happened.

But, in a city as large as NYC,
with a population of almost 12,000,000,
Over 600,000 protestors: 300-something arrests equals 0.25%

and it happened over a period of five days.

I am by no means condoning the arrests, I am putting it into perspective.

What I found particularly distressing was the fact that this huge protest rec'd. barely any media attention, but the arrests surely did.
But that's the way it is now in Jesusland :(

Mayor stiffs probe of RNC arrests
BY FRANK LOMBARDI
DAILY NEWS CITY HALL BUREAU

A City Council hearing to probe the way cops handled protesters at the Republican convention was boycotted yesterday by the Bloomberg administration.

City Hall refused to send anyone to testify, citing pending litigation stemming from the nearly 2,000 arrests during the convention two weeks ago.

*****

Critics have complained the NYPD violated the rights of protesters by using such tactics as trapping people with orange netting to make mass arrests and using scooters and metal barriers to "micromanage" protests.

Arrested demonstrators were corralled at a former bus garage on a West Side pier that some said was filthy and hazardous. The city has denied anyone was in danger.

NYPD Cracks Down On RNC Protestors
09.02.2004 12:20 PM EDT

NEW YORK — A day of organized protests at the Republican National Convention resulted in more than 1,000 arrests all over New York on Tuesday. As police sirens squealed through the evening twilight across Manhattan — with confrontations occurring from the Ground Zero site downtown to the New York Public Library on 42nd Street — many observers were left questioning what led to so many arrests, and how the arrested parties were chosen.

***********

Despite the fact that most actions remained non-violent as advertised, and contrary to negotiations with protesters at numerous locations that may have allowed those actions to continue, the NYPD ended up using a strategy of arrests, rather than containment. Spokespeople for the NYPD did not return MTV News' calls for comment at press time.

Witnesses said that members of the War Resisters League, who claimed to have brokered an arrangement with the NYPD wherein they could march solemnly from Ground Zero up to Madison Square Garden without impeding traffic, were arrested the moment they crossed Church Street. Observers from the New York Civil Liberties Union called the NYPD's tactics "bait-and-switch." More than 200 people were arrested in the downtown exchange.

East of Union Square, a permit-less rally heading toward MSG was halted before it even had a chance to move a full block. Among the more than 50 people detained were members of a film crew making a documentary about the political process in the United States of America.

In one of the day's more heated clashes, at the library on 42nd Street, protesters who tried to hang anti-Bush banners on the lion statues that adorn the building's steps got into a struggle with police, resulting in over a dozen more arrests.

Why were these actions treated differently from others, such as Monday's mostly peaceful March for Our Lives down 2nd Avenue, which was also staged without a permit but was allowed to continue? Paul Browne of the NYPD's deputy commissioner's office was quoted in the Times as saying, "If they want to chant, that's fine, but if they take to the street, they'll get arrested."

A Raw Deal For RNC Protesters?NEW YORK, Sept. 3, 2004

(CBS/AP) A judge ordered the immediate release of nearly 500 protesters Thursday - just hours before President Bush's speech at the Republican National Convention - and then fined the city for refusing to comply with his order.

State Supreme Court Justice John Cataldo fined the city $1,000 for every protester held past a 5 p.m. deadline that he had set for their release. It was unclear how many detainees were still in custody, but Cataldo had ordered the release of 470 people.

"These people have already been the victims of a process," state Supreme Court Justice John Cataldo told the city's top lawyer. "I can no longer accept your statement that you are trying to comply."

The detainees had been in custody for anywhere from 36 to 66 hours. The decision was immediately hailed by attorneys for the demonstrators.

"They have to release them right now," said veteran civil rights attorney Norman Siegel. "The judge, to his credit, said, 'Enough."'

*****

The city had blamed the sheer volume of detainees for the backlog in getting them released. More than 1,700 protesters have been arrested during the convention and the preceding few days - nearly 1,200 of them on Tuesday during a long-planned day of mass civil disobedience.

The judge's order came less than six hours before Bush was to accept his party's nomination for a second term in a speech at Madison Square Garden. Police were expecting protests coinciding with the speech.

36. No....
The officer is assigned a post and that is the weapon he carrys. Not a big deal actually.

What people fail to realise is that a handgun is a purely defensive weapon. It is short range and not very accurate compared to a rifle. The Officer in the picture is probably assigned to a post away from potential crowds where he can use the rifle if needed. This is not something new....

edit to say that I believe rank and file are more dem than you think. Both military and police are just like everybody else and are predominately democratas. That is not just my opinion but fact based on union documentation. I do not have a link however so I would say that we probably could just agree to disagree on this one.

Guess we will just have to disagree.

I have been active duty Army and a Police officer. In my personal experience as a Democrat we are in the minority.

Not sure to what union documentation you refer. There are no unions in the military and the only real Police union is FOP. FOP only represents a small number of officers usually in large cities. FOP supports Democrats like most unions but who really knows how its members vote.

50. New Inaugural Protest Site

Now that it looks like George Bush is definitely going to be inaugurated it's time to dig in for the next four years. We are quickly putting up a website to help with coordinating and getting the word out on Inaugural protests (only 8 days to go). The site's aim is to be bipartisan (I know this is a liberal forum, please be patient with us. There really are many people from all walks of life who are against Bush so we are going to try to be as all inclusive as possible) and is geared toward the first time protester. We are attempting to list all the major(peaceful) anti-bush protests so that first time protesters have a place to begin their research and join in. The major problem now is almost all hotels in the DC area are booked, if you have any housing links to forward please to do so. Pardon the appearance of our site we are trying to get it up as quickly as possible before the inaugural, we are still waiting for the revised design and new template. Like most people we were shocked by Bush's reelection and this is being done on the fly. More content is also on the way. Webmasters out there feel free to link to us and send us an email that describes your site and we will try to reciprocate. Whether you link to us or not, it might be a good idea to start a few threads on DU on the counter inaugural to give people a heads up as to what is going on and channel some of the lingering frustration on this board. The biggest problems right now are finding a place to stay and many people in many states are having a problem with transportation. Post those housing links and organize car pools in you local areas to get people to DC. Good luck and lets show the world how most of America really feels.

http://www.dcprotests.com

DCprotests.com is going to remain up after the inaugural for possible future protests and to put up pictures in case the protests are ignored by the media.

We may be changing hosting services so if you cant find us at dcprotests.com try dcprotests.net
