A DUer's Wakeup Prayer -- The Hopi Elders Speak

[Fly by night]

This has been my morning meditation for the past year, a gift from a Montana friend. It has really taken on much more meaning in the last few months as, first, I worked as a campaign volunteer; and, later, as I have pondered what I (we) can really do to overcome the turn for the bad that our country has taken. This prayer reminds me that we have much to be thankful for, including the fast flowing river. See all who are here among us at DU and celebrate. We are the ones ....

From the Hopi Elders

You have been telling the people that this is the Eleventh Hour.
Now you must go back and tell the people that this is The Hour.

Here are the things that must be considered:
Where are you living?
What are you doing?
What are your relationships?
Are you in right relation?
Where is your water?

Know our garden.
It is time to speak your Truth.

Create your community.
Be good to each other.
And do not look outside yourself for the leader.

This could be a good time!

There is a river flowing now very fast.
It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid.
They will try to hold on to the shore.
They will feel like they are being torn apart, and they will suffer greatly.

Know the river has its destination.
The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off toward the middle of the river,
keep our eyes open, and our heads above the water.
See who is there with you and celebrate.

At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally, least of all ourselves!
For the moment we do, our spiritual growth and journey comes to a halt.

The time of the lonely wolf is over. Gather yourselves!
Banish the word struggle from your attitude and vocabulary.
All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration.

We are the ones we have been waiting for.

URGENT CALL FROM THE MAYAN ELDERS OF GUATEMALA, 1/10/2005
Monday, January 10 2005

Through the ancient techniques of divination and tools of prophecy, the Mayan elders are calling forth to humanity at THIS TIME to pay closer attention to the messages being sent forth by the mother earth and to immediately take the actions they have been calling for, to unite in an effort to bring balance again upon our planet. There is a specific call for people around the world to join in prayer, meditation or whatever method of spirituality one engages in to unite on January 18th at the time of their local sunset (approx 6:00PM). This date is B'elejeb(9) Keme according to the sacred Mayan Cholq’ij calendar and has the potential for protecting humanity from disaster.

With you and your friend's blessing, I would like to use this meditation in a UU church service I'm doing in about a month. The topic will be along the lines of "What Have You Been Doing While Fascism Grows In Our Country?"

I don't want them to feel like I'm attacking them, I don't want them to take it personally. But there is a proliferation of clubs in this country that make individuals feel good personally, but do nothing (or little) to promote the common good.

For example, my church has a mother's group. Now I agree it's important to have parental support groups, but when they get together it's to do things like making Halloween costumes. It may be that costume-making enhances their children's lives for an evening, but what about the future they are creating to pass on to their children? Couldn't they use that time to work for accessible health care for all children or something? We have a million things that distract us from the struggle, but if we ignore or forget the struggle, we risk the continuation of human rights and the survival of the planet.

Anyway, this prayer has called to me strongly. Thank you for posting it. I needed it today!

14. You're right. We all have to deliver the wake-up call to everyone we know

and this issue of a fair and free democracy is an easy one to sound the alarm around. Because it could not be more fundamental to our way of life than a fast-moving river is to Indian people living in a desert land.

I've posted the following several times....one of these days I will verify the person and the words, but here it is anyway...

I believe it was John Kennedy's friend, Larry O'Donnell, who said (sometime after the assassination) that we should not place all our devotion on a person - place it on an ideology (so that when a life is ended, the ideology lives on).

All paraphrased. I hope I referenced it correctly.

So the words , "And do not look outside yourself for the leader" connects with me.

Not just that, but each of us needs to be motivated enough to lead himself when needed.

I could hardly believe these words as I read them. They are thoughts that I have been thinking lately. Strong thoughts, frequently occurring to me.

People so disappointed in Kerry. But what has really been happening? A fabulous, unprecedented democracy movement in the U.S. of A. I never thought I would see it. It is far deeper and wider than anything that happened in the '60s--and that certainly was a time of vast progressive change.

This is different. It's an outgrowth of that, but it's bigger--and it seems aimed at more fundamental change. It took a severe blow on 11/2, but it is recovering. The election was never really about Kerry. It was about US--we citizens, realizing our strength, recovering our country's founding principles, and really, really re-evaluating who we are, and what is being done in the world in our name.

The '60s antiwar movement got rid of major overt war for a couple of decades, and got rid of the Draft, but it did not fully address or change the militaristic underpinnings of the country, or the vast, powerful military apparatus that the BushCons have now seized and are using for their personal enrichment, among other things.

The deaths of all of our best progressive leaders in the space of five years--JFK in 1963, Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy in 1968--caused very serious demoralization. It was then apparent that peace and justice, no matter how much people wanted them, would not be permitted as the mainstream goal of the country. And all those progressive movements that had arisen out of the antiwar movement--impelled by it--fractured one from another, and began to pursue the limited goals of self-interested segments of the population (women, blacks, gays, environmentalists, etc.). No one was seeing to the NATIONAL agenda. And no leader arose to pull it all together.

And now, here we are again--with the biggest crisis our nation has ever faced: a fascist coup twice stealing a national election and waging a terrible war that the whole world is repelled at.

Wanting a leader. Begging for a leader. Finding a leader, Howard Dean--and then seeing him done in. And turning to another leader, Kerry, and hoping, hoping.

13. You know...three leaders were gone in a poof in the 60's, but their

essense and ideology is present and helping us along, collectively.

Many leaders. When you take a look at the Native American legacy - there is always a reference to our leaders, our ancestors, but they (Native Americans of the now U.S.) never crowned anyone...am I wrong? I'm ignorant here. Honest question.

Maybe we are getting closer to Of the People, By the People, For the People.

The heirarchy in the Constitution requires a name so our work is to find a person who represents us authentically and justly Us meaning US.

Instead of hearing someone say: I have a plan, I will do this...let's hear: we have a plan, we will do this.

I just wrote a post on another forum that I hoped would help to inspire some "doom and gloom" folks toward hope and taking action toward effecting positive change. I ended with this line: "WE are the ones we've been waiting for... and the time is now." And then, I came here and found this thread. Ummm... I've never read this before. So, is this serendipity or what?!? I'm just a little freaked out. LOL

21. Leave it to the indigenous ones...

not the usurper-oppressor-agressor-genocide-committers, to come up with a holistic, universal, philosophical perspective.

Is it apparent to anyone else that we Europeans, in contrast with indigenous peoples, take such a short-sighted and consumptive approach to everything? It makes sense, considering our oppressor/aggressor history. (Which is not to say there aren't certain admirable qualities in the pioneering spirit...)

Contrast that with the indigenous, who lived in and with places for thousands of years, in harmony with resources, and with a sense of permanence and no angst to quit and move on and take over! (unless nomadic; utilizing and then letting rest local resources). (Which is not to say there weren't and aren't' resource and geographical wars and conquest between indigenous communities.)

I find my spiritual nourishment in indigenous belief systems about earth and time and our tiny space within them. Thus my "signoff" from the great peacemaker, MLK, Jr., who we honor and recognize this coming week: "The arc of history is long, but it bends towards justice."

26. I'm late getting to this, but sorely needed a shot of inspiration

I've fallen into the sense of futility and I hate the feeling of it. I have always believed my spiritual beliefs were more adequately represented in NA beliefs and spirituality. Yet I am not of the culture and can only "borrow" what is made available. After election, we decided to end our affiliation with our white christian church, we are both preachers at our little church, but in finding their agenda more aimed at their own survival, after the war in Iraq was initiated, we have become disenchanted with finding our "middle of the road" church as a means of fulfilling our 'calling'. Perhaps it was an unsatisfactory settling for second best from the beginning when we decided to seek out this church. We live in a quite small town area and choices are somewhat limited but we also felt a need to find something that might meet some of our needs for spiritual expression.

We have 2 who were deployed to Iraq = 15 months, and we became Warriors for the cause so to speak, to speak out against the war in church, in our sermons, in our lives, in our families, among our community. While the speaking out helped me feel better than hopeless, it did not sway public opinion too much. Elections and I felt that John Kerry was the best immediate action course to bring relief to the carnage so we threw our energy and efforts into helping bring that about, and are still stunned by the outcome. We worked steadily here at DU and everywhere else we could for the 7 weeks after election to help push along and bring to light the vote fraud issue right up to Senator Boxer's contesting the electoral vote. We watched in horror as no other Senator stood with her in rightful duty to the country.

We continued working but lost heart over this last two weeks. We now know our loved ones will indeed be redeployed for second tours to Iraq and we dread the fear as we all know surviving the first tour was as much as we could hope for, a second tour is beyond terrifying.

I earnestly pray the great Ancestors are indeed shining a Wisdom beyond the 5 senses and that the last vestige of hope lies in Mother Earth herself in harmony with Grandfather.

My Arapaho teachers and friends say that, when we are working to do good things, the "devil" will always throw roadblacks, distractions and other impediments in our path. As a rssult, if our path is too smooth, we are likely to be on the wrong path.

Given how bumpy our national road has been lately, but how determined DUers are to "stay the course" until we remove this illegitimate regime from power, we must be on the right path. Together. Aho.

We must be the models for inspiration. And we are having an effect. In just the last month, the number of Americans who believe the election was stolen has increased 50%, and that's with a media lock-down that should embarrass every competent, patriotic and moral person still working in the MSM and frighten every American who thought the media was a balancing force against tyranny. (No more, it seems.)

So it must be the "raging river" power of the Internet and our own one-on-one persuasiveness that is making the difference. We are having an effect.

The ball is starting to roll, and it will roll all over Bush-Rove and the rest of the Republi-Nazi mob before we are done. We just have to keep on keeping on ... keep celebrating and learning from and supporting each other in the process.
