2. I want to remind people on one thing

Talk radio is no longer a right wing monopoly. We now have Air America, and if the Fairness Doctrine were to be brought back, that could mean that many Air America stations would either have to have a conservative show, or Air America hosts would have to have conservative guests (Franken already does this, to the obvious irritation of many DUers).

I just want people to realize that.

Having said that, I favor the Fairness Doctrine and urge its reinstatement.

6. What you say is a good point. But how nice if Limbaugh had to be followed

by Franken or Randi Rhodes.

You can still have shows dedicated to the Democratic/Liberal cause followed by the Conservative/Repug cause. It's just that you need an "equal" number. That allows room for Greens and others to broaden the viewpoint. (at least that's my hope). I remember when there WAS a Fairness Doctrine...and we had much more creativity and diversity in programming than we have now.

by doing a huge fax/phone/e-mail campaign on this...

One fall out from the CBS AWOL story..is that we can use this to our advantage by saying..."CBS stepped over the line and it shows why we need the Fairness Doctrine reinstated, because we don't want either Liberals or Conservatives to have total control of any individual Cable Channel or Network."

I supported CBS and am angry that Mary Mapes and others were fired. But, we may be able to use it to our advantage by showing the Repugs that this is important for all of us to have "Balance & Fairness." (it's my hope anyway to make "lemonade out of lemons."

It's a noble cause but ultimately doomed. Reading Congresswoman Slaughter's interview is a little depressing. The money against it is too great.

One can assume that this is intended to apply only to broadcast TV and Radio only since Congress has deemed these airwaves belong to the people. But I doubt a fairness doctrine would stick to cable, internet or satellite radio broadcasts.

Then of course, who would decide? Already the FCC is in bed with the GOP. Plus, there are a LOT of wackos out there that actually think that ABC, CBS, and NBC are too liberal. And what would happen to NPR?

That said, I signed the petition too.
