words are intelligible and convey meanings, isn't it? They can be so subversive in the wrong mouths.

When the neocons, instead of accepting the consensus of opinions concerning the meanings of words, choose to invest an antithetical meaning in them: green = red, blue = vermillion, up = down, freedom = shock and awe, war in the streets, destruction of basic amenities, etc, why would a congressional hearing impugn the neocons' integrity? It doesn't really square with the kind of authority they are committed to garnering, does it?

They need to set up a kind of French-style "Academy", to rule on the meanings of words, however changeable according to the situation. Perhaps Justice Scalia would agree to be its President.
