BLAST! LETTER OF THE WEEK #1: The Media and the Protests URGENT!
Edited on Thu Jan-20-05 08:41 AM by Peace Patriot
Some of us are starting a LETTER OF THE WEEK feature here that will provide sample letters that you can use on one forum-selected topic per week, and contact information, mostly aimed at helping Congress focus on our issues, to support progressives in Congress who are taking brave stances against the BushCons, and to encourage others to join them. Barbara Boxer wrote that she had 40,000 letters backing her up in her tough interrogation of Condaleeza Rice this week. This inspired us to want to do more.

See our forum beginnings at

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=203x293412

This first letter, however, is aimed at the media, just for today, to encourage them to provide coverage of the DC protests--the people who represent the majority of Americans in disapproving of George W. Bush's war (disapproval of the war at nearly 60%)! (WE are the majority!)

Here is an easy MEDIA BLASTER by which you can send one of these sample letters, or your own letter, out to dozens and dozens of news organizations, all at once. Just cut and paste the four sets of media email addresses into your email program, cut and paste your letter, and SEND:

http://www.independentmediasource.com/voteintegrity2_12.htm

-----------

SAMPLE LETTER #1:

Dear (any news organization)

I urge you to take the occasion of the Bush Regime's inauguration to evaluate the American peoples' disapproval of his war, now up to almost 60%. The people who are protesting his inauguration in DC today speak for most Americans. That's what these opinion polls are saying.

Please treat these representatives of the majority fairly and fully in your coverage of this event. You should know that you are also being evaluated on your fulfillment of your duty as journalists and as a news organization. That same 60% or so majority who disapprove of Bush's war, are also dismayed at your failure to question this regime on its many lies, hypocrisies, wretched policies and crimes.

Many people are now seeking out alternative news sources because we feel misrepresented and misinformed by the news media. We expect tough questioning of this Regime—such as that of Senator Barbara Boxer in her questioning of Condaleeza Rice about Iraq, in the recent hearing. We expect tough investigation, such as that conducted by Congressman John Conyers on election fraud. We expect news organizations to stand in opposition to the powers that be, not in collusion with them. And we expect protesters, who represent a majority of Americans, to be given at least equal time with George Bush.

----------

SAMPLE LETTER #2

Dear (to TV news organizations)

The real story of January 20, 2005, is that Americans' disapproval of Bush's war stands at almost 60%. The real story is therefore outside the vetted crowds of the coronation ceremony among the people who are fed up with this regime and have come to DC to protest it, with colorful signs reading, "Stop your murderous war!", "Bring the troops home!," "Count every vote," and "Don't rob the elderly!" These protesters are the true face of America as it expresses its rejection of the most unpopular president in American history.

The real story can also be found all around the country where people will be turning away from their TV screens in disgust at this regime, which has no concept of how ordinary people live in this catastrophically mismanaged country.

You wonder why your news ratings are dropping? It's because you don't cover the real story.

Sincerely,

-------------

SAMPLE LETTER #3: (a somewhat funnier version of the above)

Dear (any TV news organization):

You wonder why your news ratings are dropping?

It's because the Bush Regime is boring and their coronation is boring. Same old imperial bloodshed in foreign wars, debt and deprivation at home, and the country's treasury squandered on gold crowns, ermine lined coronation capes and opulent balls.

People have seen this before for thousands and thousands of years. They would rather have a real democracy, with all its free speech, diversity and healthy skepticism. And they would rather have help with their medical bills, finding jobs and surviving in this BushWhacked economy. And they would rather have their sons and daughters home from foreign wars, healthy and whole. THAT would interest them--leaders who care!

So, get creative! Start thinking for yourselves, and cover the REAL news--like all those protesters out there under the cold DC sky with their colorful signs and rebellious ideas. ("Count every vote!", "Bring the troops home!", "Stop your murderous war!" "Don't rob the elderly!") THAT's news. Bush is not.

As a matter of fact, nearly 60% of Americans disapprove of Bush's major project, the Iraq war. The protesters represent a majority of the people. Please treat them accordingly. They are NOT boring. And people will like to see THEIR representatives in Washington.

Sincerely,

2. An idea.
We should take our own pictures of the protests and include one with our letters to the media. Then they can't disappear them as easily.

7. itzamirakul, and ac8916: Could you go to the first URL listed above...
...and review the Condaleeza Rice letter? I would like to post it next.

Do either of you know...

...status of potential Senate filibuster on Condaleeza Rice? I heard after the Inauguration, but could that be Friday? If so, this letter is urgent.

...status of the Gonzalez hearing? I heard it was delayed, but to when?

I also badly need a web site that lists all current Senate snail mail addresses. I've posted a site at the other URL that has Congressional fax nos. by state, and an automatic email sender at the site. (I'll consolidate all this info. at some point, and include with each LETTER OF THE WEEK posting.)

If you want to work on any of the other letter topics, feel free! (Several are urgent.)

I'm going off for a moment, to do some more MEDIA BLASTING on the coronation.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Attorney General designate Alberto Gonzales will have to wait at least another week before getting a Senate committee vote on his nomination to be the nation's top law enforcement officer.
Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee decided Wednesday to ask for a one-week hold on Gonzales' nomination.

17. ac8916--THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
The Senate address site is just what we needed! The OTHER site posted here has their fax nos. and direct email sending. (The only thing we don't have are their state office tel/fax, which are sometimes easier to reach. But that might take slogging work, going from Senate web site to Senate web site.

And THANK YOU for the info on Rice and Gonzales (I've been spelling his name wrong with two z's).

My, my, the article on Rice is aggravating--and what's most aggravating is Sen. Biden extraction of a promise...a PROMISE...A PRETTY PLEASE PROMISE from Condaleeza Rice that she will speak with candor to the *.

It's a fawning lapdog article! And only BOXER and KERRY voted against her. The other Dems voted for this liar and mass murderer. We'll have to take names. I've had it with these kinds of Democrats. And I'm SO GLAD that Kerry was on the right side of this!

...makes me more determined to do thank you letters.

4. Please keep this kicked this morning! KICK! We have only hours to get...
...these letters blasted to the media, before coverage of the coronation begins.

------

itzamirakul - Welcome aboard! Join the discussion at the first URL above, where we've started a list of priority topics. The Condaleeza Rice hearing and potential filibuster is next--for letters to Senators. Then, the Gonzalez nomination.

What are you interested in doing? One need we have to obtain the snail mail addresses of Senators. Would you be interested?

-------

sfexpat2000 - I like your idea! The story will be viable for maybe a week, probably less (probably just through the weekend), so we'll have to get photos very fast. I'm not much of a techie on that score (photos). Can we provide the photos here, at this forum, in a way that people can grab them and attach them to a MEDIA BLASTER email (to muliple email addresses).

Maybe what we should do is send them in a second separate email--so we're sure everybody gets the text. (I imagine these days that reporters have pretty good computers, but you never know.)

6. Here are better headers for the letters...
I'm finding, in sending via the MEDIA BLASTER by email, to multiple media, that the letter form is awkward (since there are no individual receipients), so I'mdropping the "Dear___," and doing the following:

Subject line: Inauguration protesters represent the majority!

Header for the letter:

PAY ATTENTION TO THE PROTESTERS! THEY REPRESENT THE MAJORITY OF AMERICANS AS WELL AS THE MAJORITY YOUR POTENTIAL AUDIENCE OR READERSHIP!

(the body of the letter)

name
town, state
phone number

12. Fantastic idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"To get back on point, Barbara Boxer thanked the 40+ thousand people for writing her, in recognition of what letters mean in the representative system. If you look at that statement from another angle you could easily surmise that repeating that action with other Senators and House Representatives will achieve similar results.
Think about this for a moment - Most people (esp. on DU) understand that Karl and Krew send talking points out daily. These talking points fill the MSM to the point of over saturation. Such that TV is now finding itself with plunging ratings across the board (from entertainment to news). I wonder what the reaction would be if DU began writing the talking points for a series of Senators and House Representatives?

Is something like this be possible?

Well, as Senator Boxer said, she was able to stand with confidence knowing a meager 40+ thousand were backing every word she said. Why not write their talking points weekly? Craft a series of 5 - 10 talking points and with 10+ thousand of your best friends, then snail mail them off every week to a targeted list of 5 - 10 elected officials in D.C.

What would your reaction be if you (insert your name here) suddenly received 10-50 thousand letters out of the clear blue sky telling you to change the color of your car from red to green? Then the very next week you received the same amount or more, with the same message. How many weeks would it take you to get a new paint job?

There's less than 51 weeks left in 2005. So that's under 51 stamps per representative (saying the targeted number is 5-10). Only thing needed is the talking points, your own printer or pen, and 10+ thousand close friends + a blog or two.

You can change the words coming out of the mouths of both parties. And you'll know by summer which progressives, like Senator Boxer, are real."

-----

Wonderful idea!

16. ac8916, you've just given me a great idea!
The Condi Rice letter was for Senators, to buck them up for a filibuster, or whatever they're going to do. So we wouldn't be using the Media Blaster for that. BUT...
why NOT send it to the Media Blaster TOO?

We could give it a little preface, and say, this is a letter developed at DU, that is being sent to all Democratic Senators. It's so easy to do with Media Blaster. Let's do it!

24. Conyers & Sensenbrenner letter. Flood them with this. ;-)
Edited on Thu Jan-20-05 04:52 PM by darkworkz
You have to remember that you send these letters to both 'pugs and Dem's. Flood the opposition just a hard as your guys. That way you've created a paper trail that they can't deny and opens them up for losses in the elections.

The 4 members I suggest getting this letter are:
Hon. F. James Sensenbrenner, Jr.
Hon. Henry J. Hyde
Hon. John Conyers, Jr.
Hon. Melvin L. Watt
addresses for all can be found here: http://judiciary.house.gov/CommitteeMembership.aspx

Letter below dotted line
-----
Dear Chairman Sensenbrenner,

I have recently learned about Representative John Conyers request to hold full committee hearings on the election results from the State of Ohio. I am writing to show my support and interest in this matter. I am deeply interested in having the full committee investigate these issues:

Unusual Results in multiple counties
Over votes which are statistically impossible
Counting irregularities in multiple counties
Spoiled ballots
Provisional ballots not properly dealt with under the laws of the State of Ohio.
Anomalies with touch screen voting equipment

This is a short list of items I would like the committee to investigate.

Representative Sensenbrenner, I know you are as interested as I in resolving these issues for the good of our election system and the full confidence of the American people in our franchise. It is our mutual appreciation of our representative democracy that I make this request and I am sure that you will do all that is in your power as Chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary to see this matter through to its proper conclusion.

Respectfully,
(sign name)
Citizen of the State of (insert State) in these United State of America

CC: (insert other HR members that you've CC'd)

Can we start posting the names and email addresses of the full committee members so this is a one shot deal like media blaster? You can find all that info on Congress.org. Sorry if this was posted and I just didn't see it. Mass faxing numbers would be good too. Faxes seem to have the most impact as far as I can see. Most of us already have our reps email and fax numbers so it is no beg deal to add them to the list, but it takes some time to navigate trough Congress.org to find all the committe members names, fax numbers, snail mails and email addy's.

25. Letter of the week benefits...!
One of the side benefits of sending the "Letter of the Week" out to the Republicans is you instantly create a massive paper trail. What good is that, you may ask?

Well, if the potential candidate of YOUR choice knows that a seated Representative or Senator has received X hundred thousand + letters over the course of Y months and hasn't responded? How much legitimate attacking power on substantive and current issues have you just provided said candidate?

yep, quite a bit.

This is just one of the more obvious end results that are born from "Letter of the Week". There are quite a bit more. How long until they change the color of the car? ;-)

Here's a re-write for post Inauguration reports:

Subject line: The PROTESTS are the story of this Inauguration!

DISGUST WITH BUSH AND WAR MARKED THIS INAUGURATION

I urge you to evaluate the Bush Regime's inauguration in light of the American peoples' disapproval of Bush's war, now up to almost 60%. The people who protested his inauguration in DC this week were speaking for most Americans.

And that's the real story of this Inauguration--not the boring, canned, official event, but the outpouring of public disgust at this Regime's unjustified war, its war crimes, its profligate spending, its thievery, its election fraud, and its obliviousness to the lives of ordinary people, seen in DC and in protests all over the country.

Please treat these representatives of the majority fairly and fully in your coverage of this event. You should know that you are also being evaluated on your fulfillment of your duty as journalists and as a news organization. That same 60% or so majority who disapprove of Bush's war, are also dismayed at your failure to question or challenge this regime on any issue.

Many people are now seeking out alternative news sources because we feel misrepresented and misinformed by the news media. We expect tough questioning of this Regime—such as that of Senator Barbara Boxer in her questioning of Condoleeza Rice about Iraq, in the recent hearing. We expect tough investigation, such as that conducted by Congressman John Conyers on election fraud. We expect news organizations to stand in opposition to the powers that be, not in collusion with them. And we expect protesters, who represent a majority of Americans, to be given at least equal time with George Bush.
