Its the way Gandhi toppled the entire British empire.
People need to learn to conduct and participate in an effective protest. If this report is true...very sad and non-productive for our cause.

8. Nonviolence as a strategy is predicated on the assumption |
|
that your opponent has some vestige of a conscience. Think of the Chinese tank driver at Tienanminh Square, who STOPPED! Think of the British, who wouldn't (usually) fire on unarmed masses.
Now think about Bush.

11. Actually, its predicated on the exact opposite.... |

Think of the Amritsar Massacre of 1919 and Bull Connor releasing the dogs and fire hoses on school children in Birmingham. These are the images that topple empires. Nonviolence!

it has to PLAY to an audience with a conscience.
The average American doesn't seem to qualify any more. Abu Ghraib is a frat party, Gitmo is a summer camp, & Gonzales gets away with advocating an official torture policy.

was that someone who may actually have been from the police side broke down part of the barrier. It looked as though the cops were trying to yank someone out. Don't know who they were targeting, but they had hoses and were spraying and shoving people back.
It's almost always the police who start the violence.

31. Preemptive violence has it's place...... |
|
My first post was sarcasm.
But here are two questions..... If you had the power to order a preemptive on the Japanese naval forces the week before Pearl Harbor, and you also had the intell. to convince you it was imminent, would you order the attack?
If you knew Thomas Jefferson in 1775, would you advocate not taking up arms against the British?
In my opinion these are events in history that necessitated the use of force, unlike the incompetence and arrogance of the current administration in their handling of Iraq.
(is that Oswald on your posts?)

32. Goodness, I hope not. |
|
I assumed it was Kerouac.
As for your two examples, I do think the term "imminent" is important when considering Pearl Harbor. So we have no argument there.
As for the TJ in 1775 scenario, I don't think the analogy fits. The American Revolution should be considered as we defending against an invading force. Any taking up of arms was not an invasion, but a defense of our soil...IMO.

Thats too damn funny..I thought a poet was Oswald, heh. (I had to look up 'Kerouac' in order find that out) It still looks like Oswald though, considering your screen name (and city) you might wanna be sure ;)
Thnx for answering the questions, it gave me a much better feel of where you are/were coming from. I had you pegged for something your not, which should explain my first post, sorry. (as for the first poster, the jury is still out)
I do not normally advocate violence, but would support it in defense of my rights. Or more specificly...if a group of people found a way to steal the Presidency OTUS, I would advocate any means that were necessary in order to reveal their designs and actions.
From the little I know of him, I think Hemingway would agree.
