36. I do think they went to far, and yes, they....

...are behind a fence, but some rather hard looking objects - not snowballs - were being hurled over the fence at the motorcade. It required some sort of police response (there was no way to know what te objects were), but pepper spray and water is too much. Neither tactic is selective - people not throwing objects got it just as bad as the ones who did, probably worse, since the ones who threw the objects probably backed out of the crowd so as not to be seen. There must have been something else the police could have could have done.

I don't really support throwing things. Just MHO. Innocent people can get hit, plus that's when you cross a line from peaceful protest to aggression.
You can say a lot with words, signs, etc...
But pepper spray hoses is a bit much. Even plain water I could understand, and small cans of pepper spray in case a person actually ASSAULTED a cop or something...

But opening a stream of pepper spray on a crowd, I agree, isn't the best option.

Actually things had calmed -- a little, but not much -- by Inaug Day '73. Nixon won in a landslide, it wasn't close (STOLEN!) like now... Again I was a kid but I recall that the whole MSM (which was about all there was then) seemed aimed at discrediting the Watergate thing (which was just starting to come on the radar) and also letting the "failed" Dem Candidate McGovern have it for being a... you name it (Commie, weak, un-American, radical, leftist, etc.)

49. That's not exactly how I remember it.

MSM was on the liberal side then, much more than they are today even though they wear that label. BTW, they wear that label from the other side now to STOP them from being liberal in their coverage. Nice how reverse psych has worked on them isn't it?

I remember the war being a great deal of the coverage every night. Most of the coverage was in favor of ending the conflict. Granted, it took a while for the protesters to get "fair" coverage. I think the tide on that coverage changed when the main target audience (the 30 to 60 crowd) began to realize that they not only knew someone that they were related to that was a protester or they began to see their local contemporaries speaking out in much the same language as the protesters. Kent State Massacre was a pivotal point too.

Then we had Watergate firing up as well. Deep Throat was at first poo poo'd as sour grapes and then documents began to be leaked that supported the issues behind the issues. Once a few cracked and admitted what they had done, all hell broke lose in the media. You have to remember, the language of the day was different than the language is today. More intellectual and less 20 second sound bites for sure.

You also have to consider that the people that worked closest with Nixon knew he was on the edge. They were glad to see him finally fall.

It is very different than today I think. In retrospect, Nixon was a pussy cat!

seemed to me like the tide turned AFTER Tricky Dicky's 2nd inaug... I remember how divided everything seemed, especially up to the 72 election. After he got in the second time, things seemed to start to turn. But again, I was a kid so maybe I saw things from a different perspective.

I remember that the GOP did succeed in defining McGovern and he really was dismissed as a serious candidate. After the '72 election though, people saw things differently.

You are right that Nixon was nothing as bad as ** though. At least he had a bit of a social conscience and believed in helping the poor (at least little), etc. Unlike the "Compassionate Conservatives" we have now.

Young men were fleeing to Canada.
Huge concerts with peace as the theme were de riguer for the day.

In fact, everything that evolved from that era was because of Nixon/VietNam...

Songs, sayings (make love, not war, peace symbol to greet others etc)

There were protests allll the time; sit-ins, die-ins, etc.

The police were named 'pigs"..flag burning, protests on campuses, a true "INTELLECTUAL RENAISSANCE"


That's the problem today...This is not the sixties---this generation is more complacent. Hopefully, we will never have a draft; it would be so sad if that were what would finally get the masses working together.
