Monday 1/24/05 Election/Fraud/Recount/Protest Thread
In order to organize and document I thought it would be a good idea to have a daily thread to place items related to the recounts/fraud. This also make it easier to "catch up" when we are away from the computer for a while.

Please help us. If you see something that isn't here post it with a link to the thread and a thanks to the author. Thanks to everyone who is helping with this project.

1. Nashua Advocate: G.O.P. Lied About Democratic Tire-Slashing in Wisconsin
(snip)

The Wisconsin tire-slashing has been used by Republicans for the past sixty days to fend off Democratic accusations that most if not all of the coordinated voter suppression efforts on Election Day were engineered by the Republican Party.

(snip)

And can it be that the Executive Director of the Republican Party of Wisconsin can't even identify a single Republican voter disenfranchised by the tire-slashing -- which, as it turns out, was in no way sponsored, supported, condoned, or sanctioned by the Kerry-Edwards campaign or the Democratic Party of Wisconsin?

Revote? If Florida and Ohio Go First by Paul Loeb, 1/25/05

In Seattle paper:

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/209165_paulloeb.html

"I'd be delighted to revote Washington's governor's race. But only if we could also rerun Ohio and Florida. Otherwise we should feel grateful that our state really did its best to ensure that every voter could vote and every vote was counted."

The Strange Death of American Democracy: Endgame in Ohio
by Michael Keefer, 1/24/05

http://globalresearch.ca/articles/KEE501A.html

"To give the man his due, Blackwell is at once more discreet and more grotesquely Orwellian than the tipsy Congressman King. Rather than flaunting his election-stealing prowess, he has preferred to boast in a Washington Times op-ed that while the election in Ohio was not in all respects perfect ("a seven-hour wait" outside polling stations, he acknowledges, "is clearly unacceptable"), it was nonetheless "perfectly inspiring--a testament to the strength and power of our democratic system, the commitment of American voters to have their voices heard and the integrity of the process that encouraged participation and demanded fairness."<4>"

PDA Summit Participants Return Home, Excited to Enact Pro-Democracy Agenda

WASHINGTON -- January 24 -- In spite of inclement weather that brought most activity in Washington D.C. to a standstill over the weekend, over 500 activists representing over 40 states and a variety of ages and ethnicities gathered in the city to strategize for the future of the Democratic Party.

Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) coordinated the Counter-Inaugural Summit to follow the inauguration of George W. Bush. The summit attracted an extensive team of progressive leaders to speak and participate in strategy meetings, ranging from policy analysts to grassroots organizers. Several of the panels will be rebroadcast on C-Span during the upcoming week.

The Cobb-LaMarche Campaign
Working to Make Every Vote Count!
----------------------------------

Dear Friends,
On Thursday, January 20, fourteen days after the historic street protest
and objection to the Ohio Electors in the Joint Session of Congress, the
Presidential inauguration and counter-inauguration took place in the
nation's Capitol. If you were not there and your only source of news
was the mainstream news media, you don't know what really happened on
that day.

In this report I've tried to accurately portray what I witnessed in the
streets of Washington DC. I make no pretension of objectivity in my
perspective of the last election and the character of our President and
the Republican leadership in Congress. They are dangerous and the
democratic tradition of our country is being challenged.

Since the report includes photograghs and short video clips that would
take up too much of your time to download in an email, I've created a
webpage and linked to it for those who want to read the report. Please
pass it on and post it wherever you feel it would be appropriate.

Here is a taste:

January 20, 2005 DC Report

the unreported news of inauguration day

by Avram Friedman

Visible Resistance to Bush Grows Geometrically in Fourteen Days

Protesters dominated the crowds over most of the Inaugural Parade Route Between the Capitol Building and the White House on January 20, 2005

In my last report, I described the events of January 6, 2005, surrounding the certification of the Electoral College vote by the Joint Session of Congress, the historic objection to the acceptance of the Ohio slate of electors by both House and Senate members and the poignant and potent protest march and rally that ensued outside, on the streets of the Capitol.

Fourteen days later, for the activities surrounding George W. Bush's second inauguration, it's necessary, again, to begin by noting that this is the news report you did not see on the evening news or in your local daily newspaper. So far, these events have received news coverage as fraudulent as the election itself. In fairness, there has been more mainstream news coverage of the inauguration protests than I have learned to expect in the last few months. Thursday night following the inauguration ceremony the evening news on FOX and MSNBC in the Washington DC area did report on some of the protest activity along the route of the Inaugural Parade on Pennsylvania Ave and to some extent, elsewhere. But, in these reports, the protests were grossly under-stated and subject to subtle ridicule to portray a false impression of smaller proportion and intensity than the undeniable reality. The Friday morning Washington Post relegated most of the protest news to the second section, leaving the major photos and headlines on the front page to the contrived official inaugural proceedings. This is not news. The meaningless pomp, with the incongruous pretension of "unity" within our country on this day, belongs in the Style section along with news of celebrity marriages and divorces. The paid and invited Extras filling the Capitol Plaza, supplying polite applause on queue, is not news.

9. CNN HAS CHANGED THE EXIT POLL INFO ONCE AGAIN!
according to RaulVB here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=203x303261

I have written a letter to these "people" asking why, in the name of decency, they KEEP CHANGING THE TOTALS???

You may remember that about a month ago we were talking about how the "liberals" have voted for "*" a 2% more than in 2.000.

The figure has CHANGED and now (today) you'll see that there is NO DIFFERENCE between the 2.000 and 2004 totals.

Moreover, is clear that CNN has decided to blame the females for "*" "victory"! And the HISPANICS too.

Until today CNN STILL CLAIMS THAT HISPANICS WENT FOR "*" in a 44% margin.

NBC HAS DEBUNKED THIS CLAIM BY CORRECTING THEIR NUMBERS! Hispanics, apparently voted for "*" in a 34% margin.

Also, "*" is said to have "won big" respect to 2.000 (CNN claims it) IN THE CITIES BIG AND SMALL.

That's the end of the story. Those are the main elements that CNN has decided to make responsible for "*" "election."

Unbelievable!

10. Bill would clarify voting procedure, pay for recounts

Bill would clarify voting procedure, pay for recounts

Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Election challengers would have to pay the entire cost of recounts that fail to change the results of the election, under a bill before state lawmakers.

The legislation, a top priority for the House and Senate, also would align federal Help America Vote Act standards with state law by creating a statewide voter database, requiring first-time voters to bring identification and defining who gets a provisional ballot.

The bill would also make clear that optical scan ballots marked in pencil and read by a machine would count even if they were marked incorrectly. Lawmakers want to make sure ballots cast by voters who underline or circle a candidate's name are counted regardless of who tallies them.

"It's not going to change outcomes of elections. It's just going to make them more accurate," said Kevin Coughlin, a Republican senator from Cuyahoga Falls who is sponsoring the bill.

11. Elections board picks Republican as new director

Republican Jill Kelly was elevated from deputy director to director of the Lucas County Board of Elections yesterday, as the GOP reclaimed control of the day-to-day operations of the office.

She replaces Democrat Paula Hicks-Hudson, who resigned earlier this month. All four members of the elections board supported her promotion.

But the governing board split when it attempted to choose a new board chairman and wound up with a new leader who didn't want and wasn't elected to the job. She won't have it for long

>>>snip

The controversy comes as investigators for Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell put the final touches on an investigation into operations and irregularities at the county board. The board has been subject to the administrative oversight of Mr. Blackwell's office for nearly three years, as nagging problems persist. Blackwell spokesman Carlo LoParo said results of the investigation are to be released next month.

13. Officials to debate fair elections

Officials to debate fair elections
Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio - In the turbulent weeks before and after the presidential election in this battleground state, Kenneth Blackwell's fairness and integrity as Ohio's chief elections officer were called into question at almost every turn.

After all, Blackwell is an ardent Republican and was President Bush's honorary campaign co-chairman.

The Ohio furor - and a similar uproar in Florida during the disputed White House race of 2000 - have raised this question: Should top election officials be allowed to participate in the very campaigns they oversee?

It will be a hot topic at a meeting of the nation's secretaries of state next month. Also, a U.S. senator is promising to propose a ban on campaigning by election chiefs.
