6. they've been attacking science for several years now
There are some pretty serious struggles going on between Bush co and the scientific community. Among other things, they have been trying to politicize the peer review process that determines which grant proposals get funded. The idea that that the National Institutes of Health research funding decisions should be based on political ideology rather than scientific merit is quite frightening. I believe this is happening in other scientific areas as well, I just happen to be familiar with this area. Henry Waxman has been leading the fight against Bush co in congress on this, but with the increased Republican majorities it's going to be a continuing struggle. I encourage people to check out their website.

'Hit List' Targets NIH-Funded Researchers
In an Oct. 27, 2003 letter to HHS, Rep. Waxman expressed outrage at a list of more than 150 scientists funded by NIH who are being targeted for their research on HIV/AIDS, human sexuality, and risk-taking behaviors. NIH is now asking these scientists to provide additional justification for their work.

UPDATE | Jan. 29, 2004
NIH Director Responds to Targeting of Research
NIH Director Dr. Elias Zerhouni writes Congress to defend the peer-review process and NIH's investment in research on human sexuality. Rep. Waxman comments, "I am pleased that Dr. Zerhouni is defending research that addresses major public health problems facing the United States. I credit both Dr. Zerhouni for his leadership and the scientific community for its tremendous opposition to tampering with the peer review process. I urge my colleagues in Congress and Secretary Thompson to respect Dr. Zerhouni's decision and disavow irresponsible attacks on science."

15. The Union of Concerned Scientists have noticed, and
released a very damning report in 2004. Unfornately, not too many people read it or knew it existed:

22. Who needs science and knowledge when you have God...
on your side!

Bush ignores education and intellectuals--particularly science--because he all ready knows all of the answers. God is giving them to him, remember?

Bush's lack of environmental policy is like that of someone who lives for today and not tomorrow. Oh! That's right! Most evangelical Christians believe that the rapture will happen during their lifetime. So, really, fuel-efficiency standards, pollution controls and global warming kinda seem silly--now don't they?!

Why worry about science when God is whispering in your ear. Furthermore, why worry about tomorrow when tomorrow we'll all be raptured!

3. Kerry and the DNC should support these studies

...financially with millions of dollars. Finance these academics and hire another group of the top programmers in the country to study the electronic voting machines and their programs and then use their findings and testimony to get injunctions to stop their use PERMANENTLY.

Hellooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh! It's a no brainer but the failure of the official party apparatus to deal with this issue for years now is one of those "great mysteries" like why is the main stream media has abandoned democracy for corporatism and war.

14. USCV does need funds...

...Kathy mentioned she is working on some grant proposals, but I don't know how long those are going to take. Right now they are reassessing and (as far as I can tell from context) thinking of having the sysadmin for their servers be volunteer, which was previously a payed position, and instead hiring a programmer/project manager. They only had money for one technical staff last month, and I don't know how they are doing for this month. This is all pretty hand-to-mouth so far.

JFYI.

12. Traditionally, the first thing fascist regimes do when seizing power --
-- is round up the intellectuals, academics, and artists, brand them as decadent subversives, threaten their families and friends, beat them up, and finally exile, imprison or kill them.

Just sit back and watch Fox News handle this story and you'll see the psychology of ostracism.

At my house, I applaud these people and challenge the "liberal" media to run with this story all week.
